The theme of The Robe centers around the crucifixion of Jesus and the birth of Christianity. It was in Judea in the days of Pontius Pilate that an uneasy sentence was imposed upon a young Jewish prophet who had disturbed the peace of the prov- ince. Marcellus Gallio, a Minoan captain, is as- signed to carry out the deed and the Galilean is crucified. The Romans cast dice for the robe and Marcellus wins. Marcellus is obsessed with remorse. The robe is first a symbol of guilt, so that he fears to see it, then of spiritual rebirth, so that its touch gives him strength and peace again. Marcellus then seeks out the disciples and becomes a devotee of the new Christianity. Production Staff STANDING: D. Spencer, C. Cardone, K. Anthony. O SEATED: P. Williams, Miss Bowyer, E. Thompson. Interestingly enough we call this act of graduation a Com- mencement, indication that it is not an end but a beginning. lt is the beginning of a new phase of life for which the school has done its best to prepare these graduates. This is your Commencement. Some will go on to college and others immediately into their vocations. Whatever your future plans, may you never lose sight of the high ideals which you have gained at South High School. You hold the distinction of being the last senior class to graduate from South High School. This ends an outstanding era in Lima's educational history, and the beginning of a bright and shining future under the Scarlet and Gray of Lima Senior High School. We feel that that wonderful in- tangible ingredient called school spirit will be an important factor in the years ahead. That fine school spirit which you have helped create at South will live long in the future. Congratulations on your Commencement Day. May suc- cess and happiness be with you always. We are ioyful because of your achievements. Our feelings of regret come with the awareness that your graduation signifies the severance of the splendid associations we have shared while living together as members of this school. You are to be congratulated on your will- ingness and determination to complete your high school work. Many young people have had a similar opportunity to earn a high school diploma, yet for reasons good and poor, they failed to complete the task. Your parents deserve high praise ,for their encour- agements and sacrifices to help you through school. May your future lives bear evidence of the deep respect you hold for those who gave you guidance. Many South graduates have distinguished themselves in professions, business, and as good citizens. You are chal- lenged to do even better. Your degree of success in the future will depend upon the courage and sincerity you take with you. l am sure that your parents and teachers have faith in your future. Best wishes to all. Merl O.
