gf xfifm 41 45,1 W F OREWORD This book is the result of a purpose. Our purpose has been to portray South High School in it truest senseg to picture every interest and activityg to crowd everything pertaining to South High School between the covers of this bookg and if possible to reflect a little of that indefinable something called school spirit. With this purpose in mind, we present to you the 1953 Pot O' Gold. If in later years when you take this book from the top shelf dusty, dog-eared, tattered, and torn, and you can live again your happy days at old S. H. S., our work will not have been in vain. -Darlene Moeller 9 QH P55 GF SOUTH HIGH SCHGOL gy if FJ N gy JF,bjJ: PROUDLY PRESENTS . .. - ..THE zneteengfundredgffy ffhree GTG' GQQQI , if it Q92 X7 SOUSZ H fi Harvest Moon 20-Football practice began September Song 4-School started 5-Football Olympia 9-Faculty picnic for new teachers 11-Introductory assembly for new teachers 12--Driving demonstration on safe driving First Pep assembly in auditorium 13--Football-Sidney 18-First day of magazine campaign X-rays for T.B. test 19-Football-Findlay 25-Individual pictures were taken for Pot O' Gold 26-Football-Cincinnati Central Vocational 27-P.T.A. X will IWNI --6-- oo You REMEMBERN WT L 'mn TSW' i W m im TO THE 1953 GRADUATING CLASS OF SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL: On the evening of June 5, 1955, YOu will be alumni- your high school days will be over. But the education, the foundation, you have built at South High School will be with you forever. Undoubtedly. your goals are everyday, human desires. You Want normal lives in a peaceful world, freedom to work in professions or occupations of your choice. The realization of those goals will be your greatest success-for only a few generations in history have enjoyed that privilege. I am confident this does not mean that your class aims to give the world nothing more than one-hundred-fifty five in- habitants. Far from it. If your class can give the world ten executives whose in- . terest in their employees as fellow men and women is not destroyed by their lust for profits, you shall be successful. lf you can give the world five doctors whose greatest joy comes from bringing peace and comfort to the sick, then you shall be successful. If your class can give to the world ten salesmen who serve their customers with truth and integrity, and perhaps six teachers with the will to inspire their students to a life of accomplishment, then you shall be successful. If from your class can come five people who lighten the load of others through art, music, or writing, then you shall be successful. If from your class can come one minister whose love of people is exceeded only by his love of God, then you shall be successful. Perhaps from your class will come five lawyers whose pro- fessional conduct will be based upon right and iustice. and not legal expediencyg and perhaps eight engineers who will give to all classes the benefits of scientific progress. If so, you shall be successful. If from your class can come six nurses whose creed is loving service. then you shall be successful. If your class can give to the world 89 women who will build 89 homes for a new generation, and if you can give 66 men whose first interest will always be the family, then you shall be successful. If from your class can come 155 people who desire to put more into life than they ever expect to get out of it, , , l . then you shall be successful. And if. a generation from now, you can sit in a similar auditorium and watch your children leave high school with the same freedom of choice that has been preserved for you,-then you shall indeed be successful. XVith sincere good wishes. GORDON G. HUMBERT, Superintendent BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education is the legal agency designated by the state to be responsible for the conduct of educational affairs delegated to the school district. The powers of the Board of Education are derived from the state legislature. Members of the Board of Education are elected by the citizenry of the community in which the schools are located. FACULTY COUNCIL The purpose of the Faculty Council is to work with the school administration of Lima South to aid in solving teacher administration problems. The council acts as a liason body between staff and administration. This year the Faculty Council has worked with the administration in establishing an in-service training pro- gram for teachers. The first step in this year's program was the polling of the faculty to determine the prob- lems on which the group wanted to work. The group selected the general topic School Discipline. The subdivisions of the main topic were as follows: 1. Homerooms and classrooms 2. Study hall and school assemblies 3. Corridors, stairs and school property 4. Out of school behavior 5. Community views on discipline The faculty divided itself into five groups, studied one of the topics, and reported their findings to the faculty at a general teachers meeting. The meetings ranged from February 5 to April 1, 1953. SECRETARIES The secretarial work at South High School was done by Miss Sharon Wren fstandingl and Miss Flora Cardone Cseatedh. -11- x r - ALAN A.
