QFUIHW ROBERT BASICER HISTORY OF 1949-1950 Thirteen-hundred and twenty-one South students returned to their classrooms to find them equipped with new fluorescent lights. Other improvements were clean walls, a new flooring in the auditorium, and glass bricks in the industrial arts rooms and the cafeteria. School got ofl to a good start with the magazine campaign reaching a total of 3'62.309.30, the second highest sales since the campaign was started twenty-one years ago. On October 2l we had our annual Homecoming Celebration with the crowning of the King and Queen, Dick Snider and Betty Aller. We enjoyed several dances which had such intriguing names as: The Cold Rushf' uThe Lollipop Hop, MThe Basketball Bounce, and 'gCupid's Twirlfl The Central Dragons could not keep pace with the South High Tigers football or basketball teams. Marching formations for football games, Christmas Vespers, a Spring Concert, an Easter assembly, and an operetta, 6'The Pirates of Penzancef' were presented by the Music Department. On November IT and lt! the junior Class presented Meet Me in St. Louis, and the Senior Class gave 'cThc Trail of the Lonesome Pinew on April 27 and 28. The drama classes 'fave six lays for assemblf rofframs. r- . I ci Our debate team won a forensic trophy at Republic, Ohio, on February 18. Our vacations were: October 2UffTeachers' Meeting in Toledo, November 24, 25 ns- Thanksgivingg December 26 to .lanuary 2f'fChristmasg February 22, Washirig- tonls Birthdayg April 6 to l2fl'iastcrq and May 3U4lVlemorial Day. The weather wrought much havoc. Often we repeated, Rain, rain, go away! lt was feared that we might haxe to close school because of the coal shortage. On March 13 we were saddened by Miss Hattie ,losephls injury caused by a fall on the ice. We were grateful to Mrs. Helen Rose for finishing the term for Miss Joseph. For the most part, the year 19449-l950 was very enjoyable, and we hope that all of the years to come will be as pleasant as this one. four PEOPLE IN THE NEWS - Junior flalfeel W- Scholars? -f Shhh! Humbert has been superintendent of schools, the Board of Education has embarked upon a much- needed building program. An attempt was made to begin where the need was greatest. To date, Lincoln School has been completed, South, Central. Carlield, Whittie1', Longfellow, and Roosevelt have been rehabilitated, the new Emerson, Irving, Low- ell, and Washiiigtori-McKinley have been started: and the contract for Horace Malin has been let this spring. A new senior high school is planned as the next step in the program. Improvements have been made in our health pro- gram, sight-saving class, slow-learning class and testing program. Strides have been taken in cre- ating interest on the part of the public in a sound educational program through school-community councils and committees. GORDON G. HUMBERT--BS., MA. Remember when we were in the seventh grade? It doesn't seem so long ago, does it? Maybe some of you don't know it but there was a boy, an awfully nice boy. too, who started learning the same subjects we did way back in the seventh grade. He mastered them well'-he was the only student in our class to graduate with straight Hhs. This was Richard Stedcke. our only bedside student. Other outstanding members of our class were jim Coats, who served as our presi- dent three out of our six years at South. It was quite a task for Janice Beech to take over the job of being Sports Editor of the Rainbow and do a good job of it too. l think she and her assistants need to be congratulated. Speaking of the 'LRainbow . it won Superior rating at the contest held at Bowling Green in April, 1949. A good share of the credit goes to this yearis capable Editor-in-chief, Ann Putman. At the Ohio Future Retailers, Convention held in Columbus. lfilaine Stcdke was elected Secretary of the State Future Retailers. At the National Convention in Ashvillc, North Carolina. Elaine was elected National Secretary of the Distributive Education Clubs of America. In our junior year we felt quite honored that one of our classmates. Nancy Knierim. was chosen for the lead in the operetta, 4'Robin Hood . Nancy. lim sure would rank high in any kind of musical program for she has a lovely voice. Many of our classmates have won special honors for their work in the band and orchestra. Eleanor Casey, one of our majorettes, won special honor for herself and our school by tying for third place in the annual junior Chamber of Commerce Band Festival. lildon Sykes was named on the third team of thc All-Ohio Football team. lt was an honor for South as well as for Eldie. Two of our cheerleaders, Janet Shade and Janet Cramer, have served faithfully on our varsity squad for four years. For their service they received gold cups which they really deserved. This year was the Hrst to see a girls, basketball game here at South open to the public. The name of the game was the G.A.A. All-Stars. Daisy Hooks, president of C.A.A.. really had her hands full planning this game. Everyone had a good time though, and all agreed it should be a yearly event. As all good things must come to an end. so must our years here at South. Vile will be gone but there will be others just as capable follow us. Perhaps they will glorify the name of South still more than we and our predecessors have done. ----ALBERTA CAHDER ibirty-three is 4 MEMORIES-The Pause that Refreshes . . . Men? Er, I Mean Men! . . .
