McLean Reed T. Carl Jansen Dr. A. N. Wiseley E. L. Baker Frank Smith A. M. Gantz W. C, Derbyshire During his seventh year as Superintendent of Lima Public Schools, Mr. J. McLean Reed has encountered numerous difficulties in securing faculty members. This, however, is only one of the duties of Mr. Reed. He also supervises teachers' work, directs the financial policy of the schools, encourages professional development of teachers, and inspires pupils to higher achievements. Mr. Reed has made many friends among the students, faculty, and parents with his Willingness to help solve the numerous problems in- six volved in education. His efforts to advance education in Lima have not been in vain as records of school work have shown. He is ably assisted in his many duties by the members of the board of education who have freely given of their time and ability in order to improve our school system. Mr. W. C. Derbyshire this year has become Director of Maintenance for the school system, He very capably looks after the repair and maintenance of all the various buildings in the city. 6 l Office Staff --. Roberson Zalia Harbaugh Maxine Miller Margaret Miller Our capable and amiable principal, Mr. Paul C, Garrison, came to our school last year from Franklin, Indiana. During the two years he has been here he has been very helpful in aiding and supervising the students and faculty. Another important position is held by Mr. H. C, Roberson, as- sistant principal, who is always ready and Willing to give advice to students and faculty members alike. Miss Zalia Harbaugh, dean of girls, is a friend of every girl in the SQUQU school. Through her tactfulness and patience she very capably gives advice to anyone who calls on her for help. Miss Maxine Miller, a graduate of South High School, is kept very busy managing the many activities that are carried on in the school oflice. Miss Margaret Miller, also a graduate of South High School, assists with the work in the office. She has been here only the latter half of this year. They have tried to prepare a book worthy of last year's annual which was given a third place rating in the competition sponsored by Columbia University. Members of the staff met daily the last period when they planned the book which will be cherished by the entire student body. The co-editors, Betty Trask, Beulah Miller, and Shirley Figgins were assisted by two juniors, Betty Hyman and Dorothy lmler. Wilma Heffner was the very capable art editor, and Betty Hahn and Betty Rodney were the typists. Under the capable supervision of Miss Genevieve Marvin, the students planned and published one issue every six weeks. The main project this year Was to publish the names and addresses of ex-South students now in the armed services. They also sent these students copies of the paper for which they received many letters of appreciation. Janice Smith, Mary Albridize, Chris Horn, Richard Umbe Letters to Lucerne , a play in three acts, is the story of a girls' school near Lucerne Switzer- land, in the late summer of 1939. Through their letters from home, which they read aloud in the dormitory each night, the girls receive Word of Germany's invasion of Poland which stirs up hatred and misguided patriotism among them against one of the students, a German girl. However, she is ultimately absolved from all blame by a concluding letter, moving and beautifully written. This annual production of the Senior Class Play, under the skillful direction of Miss Marie Bowlus, was given in the South High School Auditorium on May 12. Proceeds were used to pur- chase a memorial for the school. Warren One of the best productions ever given at South was this year's impressive opera The Vagabond King . Only through the untiring efforts of Mr. Maxfield and the stage crew, the orchestra under the direction of Mr. Luoma, and the backing of students, teachers, and friends was the choir able to present such an outstanding performance. The plot centers around a young vagabond, leader of the rabble of Paris, who is made king for a day by Louis Xl when the king is told in a prophecy that a pearl from the gutter would rise and save the state. Katherine, a lady of the court, falls in love with this Villon and later saves him from the gallows by consenting to marry him. The opera was under the capable direction of Mr. William G. Luoma succeeded in directing the orchestra in many successful performances. Members of the orchestra were honored at a banquet given February 23, by the Band and Or- chestra Parents' Association. Juniors in the orchestra were awarded their orchestra letters. and an in- teresting program was presented. Besides playing for class plays and school assemblies, the orchestra presented a formal concert Sunday, February 27. The purpose of the Comwolei Club is to create interest in nature, especially garden products. As their contribution to the war effort the members of the club learned conservation, growth. and cultivation of Howers and vegetables. Another important phase of gardening was learned: that is, how to select seeds, order them, and cultivate them. Several trips were made to local florist shops to study cultivation of flowers under greenhouse conditions. These girls had a definite object in view when they volunteered for this work. They felt that they wanted to do something that would definitely aid in the War effort.
