Our school life here is ended, No more we'll roam the hallsg For we must follow and obey - When a stronger impulse calls. VVe've been loyal to every phase Of school life, here at South. Faithfully we've worked, and Willing, every year at South. Proudly we have waved on high Our colors, blue and gold. Oft times to victory we've cheered Our warriors, brave and bold. Oh, it's six long years we've spent here Six happy, care-free years Filled with joys that now must cease As graduation nears. And we recall good times we've had As it nears the time to part, For they'll soon be but memories Treasured in our hearts. Oh, it seems unfair that we must leave Old South, old Gold and Blueg It's hard to think that the school we've loved Must at last be bid adieu. Yet we cannot linger here for aye, Like others, we too pass by To seek what life holds for us, far From the portals of South High. So farewell, dear Alma Mater, Dear teachers, classmates true, May your school life carry on E'en though ours is through. And- when we've begun new lives ln thelworld beyond, K May the memory of our spirit Inspire you on and ,on. K L! 2, J 1 f !T':2:i. at W1 l - 5 fxli.,-, dll ' l 5' -- gi: 1 X. j Xl M ! Even as Freshmen, they began their upward climb to Seniorhood with meritorious effort. Evelyn Winegardner proved capable of bearing the responsibilities of leadership. Progress was rapid. The girls' enthusiasm in basketball foretold of future honors. Remark- able ability was displayed in The Gypsy Rover and Strongheart. Throughout the term the pep of this body was unexcelled. The reins of government in '22 were placed in the skilled hands of Mark Lutman. Then as Sophomoies the Class' of '25 continued its illustrious career. Their partici- pation and success in athletics was noteworthy. Representation in dramatics, music, and clubs showed the ability and spirit of a group of determined students. On re-entering S. H. S. as Juniors, the Class of '25 entrusted the administration K S I fl l ll ll . A . 3? ' ss E . f ' A VK .h h ,'-f'4,,. f-f --f' Af f----nf-W ---W f-ff+sX4g XXX. . 'vm-v Y. .. The championship of the Soccer Tournament went to the girls of the class. ln the Garden of the Shah and Daddy Long Legs were the achievements of the '25ers in theatricals. The Junior-Senior Prom turned out to be the biggest social function of the year. Then the long-waited day arrived! In September, 1924, the Seniors began their final season in their beloved South. The untiring efforts of Myrtle Slade, the chief executive, brought the class into' the very center of the limelight. The motto these people adopted when Freshmen was greatly emphasized, Do it for South - a noble maxim worthy of emphasis to be sure! The responsibility of putting across a lyceum course was placed on the Seniors of '25 by lVIr. Graham, principal. With the aid of Miss Conrath, the selected program was an assured success. Another institution established was Senior Hobo Day. The droll costuming will evidently remain in the memories of many for a long time. To the Seniors of this year is also due much credit for inaugurating the Hrst Home-Coming Day at South. Despite the fact they don't' allow it anymore at Kissing Hollow, several out- door parties were held. The Professor's Love Story, a Barrie Comedy, was presented by the talented ones of the classyin the new auditorium. The appearing of the Rainbow weekly instead of bi-monthly was likewise hailed with delight. The climax of social function was the Junior Prom. Everyone assured the Juniors no other event' had been planned and carried out with so much genuine entertain- ment in it, as that last farwell reception for the class of '25. ' Senior Day and the bestowing of the memorial was greeted with both tears and joy. Finally, the day of granting diplomas dawned! Then the Class of '25 passed forever through the portals of high school life at South. 1. mg ueni W n,n'f45'x' 11 4 . - MQ.. .ZA 7 ,QL , N 5 A . A- -3, 5'- '.'3, 1--1 T S 4. 13-if t. . Eliza Stuart was elected president. A weiner roast and several parties helped to make the year a success socially. VVe were represented in both Choral and Ye llflerrie Plays, and on football and basketball teams. Q Last year we entered South High, as Sophomores and elected Beryl Wren as our leader. We won a prominent part in athletics, having members from our class on the basketball and football teams. The boys, class basketball team held the championship. We also had two parties, one at the Locomotive Club and another at the Moose Hall. We edited one edition of the Rainbow, Thomas Sidener acting as editor. As in the Freshmen year, we were represented in the Choral Club and Ye Merrie Plays. But this year has proven to be the most successful of all. The very first thing of importance which the Juniors accomplished was a thrilling hay-ride to Kissing Hollow. Shortly after this, a big party, a covered-dish supper, and a Christmas party all in one, was held in the Cafeteria. The same night the Whole class enjoyed a theatre party at the Faurot with lVIr. Clark as host. The next important event was the choosing of the standard ring by the Juniors. The committee was especially competent in this task of selecting South's standard emblem. One feat the Juniors can always be proud of is that they were the first class to wear the new ring. During the course of the year, the Juniors were represented in every play and in every sport. The captains of both football and basketball teams were Juniors. The girls soccer team held the championship. The Juniors also had the honor of conducting the mass meeting during the holiday season of February. In debating this year, half of the team members were Jun-iors. But the biggest event of the year was the class play, Adam and Eva. The cast was especially good, and honorable mention must be given to the efficient com- mittees. lt was the most successful enterprise the Juniors have ever undertaken. The Junior issue of the Rainbow preceding the class play was especially interest- ing and original. Byron Osmon was editor this year. Marcli llth was the night of the Hard-luck dance. It was said that this was the funniest and best party ever staged by this class. Everyone had a wonderful time. The committee on this dance deserves highest honor for their service and loyalty. The Junior-Senior Prom ended the successful career of the Junior class of this year. It was declared the best ever and was the crowning of the year's work. The only hope which the Juniors entertain is that their Senior year may be as successful and interesting as this year has been. . A Weiner roast at Kissing Hollow and a Hallowe'en party were the high lights of their first year. The class took an active' part in school activities. Many football and basketball men represented '27 in athletics. Several Freshmen also took part' in the dramatic presentations of the year. VVith more knowledge, they became Sophomores. Again the class of '27 was prominent in school activities. The spotlight was flashed on this class for the second time on the football field and basketball floor. This year, members of this class took prominent parts in the dramatic play and operetta. Come on '27. ..- 5- f- 1 N ,r . History of the Freshman Class The first meeting of the class of '28 was held in the former part of October, 1924, for the purpose of electing class officers. Helen hllorey was chosen by a small majority to lead the Freshmen during the year. She proved to be a good leader and the class progressed under her leadership. Many of the class qualified for the Ye Nlerrie Players. Some of the members of the class organized a club which they called the Upides. There were also some boys of the Freshman Class who were initiated into the Hi Y Club. ' Some of the members of the class evidenced a great interest in athletics. There were several who made the hrst football team, and two, Louis Goebel and Elwood Guy, received letters. The Freshmen meant a lot to South Hi during the football season. YVhen the basketball season came, some of the Freshies went out, but not so much enthusiasm was shown in this sport. The class enjoyed several social functions during the year. Miss Bachmayer was supervisor of these. The Freshmen consider their first year of high school life a success. Next year they will come back to school as Sophomores, ready to renew their efforts for South High. A -ef tV.?f'-'f. f N .mffrv .,if5':w-svif'9+iJ .FK sifiilg '7-if ' ' i KD -5 I f' '. The Choral Club has won for itself the name of being one of the most important clubs of South, by its activities this year. The Choral Club not only presented its annual operetta, but it also entered the Eisteddfod at Findlay and carried off second honors there. Then. it also gave a radio concert which was a great success in every way. Under the leadership of Miss Leona Smith, the Choral Club has done its best work this year. The Bells of Beajoulaish was the Choral Club operetta, presented in the new auditorium. The story took place on a small French island, where an American party had come to visit. Mr. Bender, the head of this party, was immediately made the object of the Countess Mariajs affections. The Duke, although affianoed to the Countess, fell in love with Aunt Sarah, Mr. Bender's sister and chaperone of the American party. Mr. Bender's daughter, Phillis and her friend, Belle, were also in the American party with their finances. These young gentlemen think they fall in love with two village girls, Yvonne and Susette. After many complications, all ends happily and the Americans' leave the island just as they found it. But out of the host of green material, Coach Galberach developed a team that won a majority of the games, and that fought, winning or losing, from whistle to gun. Injuries took an unusually heavy toll this year and sent an almost wholly new second team backfield into the Thanksgiving battle. Van Buren was the first opponent faced and was sent home smarting under a 19-2 walloping. Coach gave nearly every player on the bench a chance to show his stuff and, consequently, the game, though rather slow at times, proved very interesting. . The long trip to Fremont, taken on the same day that the game was played, took all the pep out of the players, but nevertheless they carried, off the scalp of the upstaters to the tune of 12-2. ' After tramping on Bellefontaine for more than three quarters, the Tigers saw their six point lead, and the game, hopelessly lost when Karbo, visiting half, make a magniiicient run for abtounchdown and kicked goal just before the gun cracked. The game with VVapakonet'a was uninteresting and the Tigers, plainly suffering from over-confidence, scored only two touchdowns, winning 12-O. Our old enemy, Bluffton, was overwhelmed by the lopsided score of 32-O, the highest count ever made between the two teams. This splendid victory put new life in the Tigers and they took Ada into camp 12-0 the following week. Ada never got past our -l-0 yard line more than once. T Probably the best and most exciting game of the season was the struggle between South and Cleveland Heights.. The Southeiners repeated the dose given two years ago and avenged last year's defeat when they held the raging Clevelanders at bay while they scored the single touchdown that won the game. The Toledo VVoodward scrap, won by them by the score of 7-0, put four first stringers on the hospital list, the defeat by Cleveland Commerce made the list bigger, and the Defiance game, which ended with both teams 12 points ahead of where they started, just about finished wrecking the team. V ' The Thanksgiving battle was a tragedy for Southern rooters and consequently glorious for Central. The crippled Tigers, who had held nothing back in former encounters, many of them with injuries that would have retired most athletes, fought the unhampered Dragons to a standstill, but fell to glorious defeat. The final score was 12-0 A It kk 1' l Q1-11, ,iglllililiilifiif in its '?J:f 'ill s Tim 1. When he hit the line, something gave and it Wasn't' Beryl. Plunges of thirty yards, almost impossible to the average fullback, were heeled off by the great bundle of muscle and courage many times. The outlook was fairly bright as three lettermen reported for practice. A team was developed that was unusually successful except in the two inter-city clashes, both of which were taken by Cent'ral in two memorable battles. Our old cage rival, Van VVert, was the first to oppose the Southerners, and after a hard scrap, it was found that the visitors had one more point than did South, consequently they departed rejoicing. The following night, Bucyrus invaded the Blue and Gold camp expecting to keep up the good work. But the Tigers with the memory of the defeat of the former evening rankling in their breasts, tramped upon the visitors Without mercy and sent them home sadder but wiser. The big Akron West team repeated the dose of last year and held the fighting Southerners down to six points while it pulled down sixteen. The Tigers just couldn't hit the hoop and missed a number of easy chances, caging only one fielder during the scrap. Leipsic, the team that took the Class B sectional championship, proved easy and only got near the basket a few times. St. Marys was not so easy, but was nosed out by the Blue and Gold in the last few seconds. Bluffton fell by the score of 9-6, the smallest count of the year. Then came theifirst big scrap with Central. VVhy linger over a tragedy? VVe lost. The basket seemed about three inches across. After polishing off Celina, South took another crack at Central. After South, had led up to the last few seconds, Doan, Central center, got lucky and stuck in two inside of ten seconds and Central had won. The next night Sidney came and left badly licked. - The Ada game, won by them, was slow since neither team cared to show much, for they were scheduled to meet in the first round of the Kenton tournament. The second game, played at the tourney, in many respects, surpassed the last South-Central game in thrills and excitement. A fielder by Ada in the last half minute eliminated the Tigers and very effectually closed the basketball season. ,af X X11 N x .. - v '.v ---.-A--- W Y- ev-ifg n 3 -1 !If'f'y ,qj5g?EggQgii's jx Qgllg' w -fkflf l li i,..m'l-isfa Q I WYMY ' K' Y' 'kg idhm' Y Y -e ' ' f!,:'.'1'9ZTfi', -'i VVILBERT THONIAS- BiIl', Four years ago, Bill made his debut into the athletic world at South and has been one of the Star performers ever since. X ily., glgillby Miss MYRTA STOVER Girls' Coarh and Pllysiml Director Girls' Athletics At the beginning of school this year, there was a marked interest on the part of the girls for athletics. This interest developed into enthusiasm and was noticeable throughout the whole year. It resulted in the -formation of soccer teams and at tourna- ment. More pep and enthusiasm were shown by the girls in this sport than in any other they have participated in. Although all the teams were especially fine, the Juniors carried off the honors as champions. The idea of giving embleims to the all-star soccer players, originated by Coach Stover, was very successful. Thirty of these awards were presented. ' The'basketball season was perhaps the most successful ever experienced by the girls. The Leader Corps, an organization of the athletic leaders, was especially helpful to Coach Stover and the players. They took charge of training rules, the selling of tickets and emblems for games, and also the final championship games. The basketball all-stars had an opportunity to display their abilities when they played a preliminary to a. South-Reserve game. Ten basketball emblems were given to all-stars. The old saying To the victor belong the spoils. was evidenced when the Seniors copped the tournament. ' The basketball season being over and the pep still running strong, the organ-ization of baseball teams was next in order. Not only was this game enjoyed. 'by all the girls but such sports as volley-ball, and various gymnasium games and exercises. The amount of pep and enthusiasm shown this year was remarkable and has never been equaled in any of the preceding years. The fine spirit of sportsmanship which was predominant in every girl marked the advance of our girls' athletics to a prominent place in the activities of our school. The one hope of the girls is that this spirit may live on and on through all the coming classes. The only sorrow to mar an otherwise perfect athletic year is the fact that we shall lose a wonderful pal and Coach. This is the one regret the girls have with the closing of the school term. Not only was Miss Stover a perfect Coach in all sports, but a comrade and friend to all. Her absence next year will 'be felt by all the girls. l .As t . if . Soccer Soccer is 11 new activity at South, having been played only two years. However much interest was taken in it by the students and it promises to become one of the mejor sports for the girls.
