S Histor of South High School. OT many years ago the school board came to the conclusion that another high school was needed in Lima. The result of this decision is our own South High, which was opened in the fall of 1918. Altough still young ' , in years, South is becoming old in tradition. - That first year was marked by many humorpus and exciting incidents, one of these was the condition of the building- The students waded through ,Ng Y mud and sawdust to get to the door, on entering the building they found the halls blocked, sometimes, they were forced to use one stairway, some- times the other, and often classes were disturbed by the entrance of workmen. Once it seemed as though all the highwaymen in the country hifi' were holding a convention in our school, but we soon found the supposed robbers to be our classmates wearing flu-masks. In spite of this the Wi! epidemic spread, and we gladly laid aside our books till it was checked. That South made progress with all these handicaps was shown by the formation of a dramatic society, Ye Merrie Players, the Girls Choral Club and the Girls Welfa.re League. ' The next fall, with all the classes from the 7th to the 12th represented, things began in earnest. School had hardly opened when a' football team was practicing. It took the team sometime to get started, but when they did they cleaned Central 10-7. In a few days the first issue of South's paper The Rainbow was published. It proved very successful, and in the spring the Annual was ready for the students. Although our basketball team lost most of its games by small scores, it forced a win from Central. . As time passed many new clubs and societies have been organized. Among these are the Commercial Club, the Blue Triangle Club, the Boys' Hi-Y, the Science Club, the Debating Society, the Orchestra, the Boys' Glee Club, the Art Club, the Masquers and the Girl Reservesff In the realm of sport, South has advanced by leaps and bounds. Year by year she has been building a reputation in football, till in the past season some of the' best teams in the state were booked. In the fall of 1921, we dedicated the new football field just back of the building. While South hasn't gone as far in basketball she has always turned out a snappy squad ready to light till the last minute. While making such progress, knowledge has never been neglected at South- YVith a splendid faculty the students have gone just as far in learning. The first term Mr. Consor, was acting principal, then came.Mr. Pogue. For the last three years, Mr. Roudebush has been at the helm. Meantime the building has become more beautiful. By the efforts of the student body, the sea of mud was transformed to a green lawn. Shrubs haveiebeen planted until now our school is one of the most imposing structures in the city. The increase in numbers has caused 1100 students to be enrolled in a school built for 800 It was necessary to enlarge the building and now plans are already completed. The new addition, will be just south of the present building. Facing Pine street on the ground floor will be a library, and above it a large study hall, just back of this will be the new auditorium seating 1500. To the rear will be the Cafeteria with-I class rooms on the second floor. Class rooms will also be placed above the present east and west halls. Just back of the present gym, is to be a larger and better one, whichlwill accomodate 1500 spectators. This will make our school complete. 1 There are great possibilities for South in the future. She has only to continue her march of progress to attain them. ' -Robert Craig '23. .qggirl-fi use-C rl-::u0nuc:r1t:r:1:.i :butt-:C zlzctun n1il101qi1 40 X
