Qlrumi After twenty nine years of faithful service to South Hugh School our friend and teacher Miss Wagner retired in th summer of 'l953 Miss Wagner a native Pittsburgher received the malor part of her education here She finished with the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Arts degrees from the University of Pittsburgh This was followed by attendanc at summer school at noted Universities Miss Wag ner forged ahead even further In her studies There was travel in Europe the Near East Africa and South America As a historian the ruins of ancient Greece Rome and Egypt fascinated her MISS WAGNER She was most fortunate in her teach mg career all of which was done in Allegheny County and the longest part done at South High School While here she was sponsor of the Junior Historians Club and responsible for many educational and enloyable field trips Among her various activities she dedicated much of her time to keep us up to date on world affairs through from continent to continent her history classes became vibrant as we ex plorecl the past through her fascinating and vivid descriptions Retirement brings to her the greatest pleasures and happiness in pur suing activities such as concerts entertaining friends traveling cooking church and civic duties Furthermore it brings to a close a philosophy that has always guided her teaching A good teacher is one who is genumely Interested in children and Miss Wagner has illustrated this interest In her students in an untlrlng fashion She has been deeply concerned with the betterment of her students and her encouragement towards better and more loyal citizens has been deeply appreciated Our earnest wish is that she may find much happiness in her well earned leisure of retirement and that she may continue her inter est in the youth of today The faculty the Oriole Yearbook Staff and the entire student body wish to express their deepest appreciation to Miss Wagner for her years of service to the welfare of our school 5 I . . To Mr Black who retnres after forty four years of actlve SSFVICS In the edu catIonal field we bld adIeu Mr Black recelved both hIs elemen tary and hIgh school educatIon In Grove CIty Stlmulated by the desIre to teach he entered Grove Cnty College where he recelved has Bachelor of Arts degree In 1910 In the same year he began hIs teachnng career and taught In Cora opolIs McKeesport Johnstown and Unlontown before comlng to South Hugh ln 1924 he began teachlng LatIn and Mathematlcs here at South He held the posItIon of Head Math Teacher under Mr McLaughlIn and also taught durmg the admInIstratIon of Mr Sterllng and Mr Shannon In 1935 he recelved hIs Mas ter of Arts degree from Columbaa UnI VSVSITY He reached the peak of hIs re markable career ID hIs years at South Durlng hIs thlrty years at South Hlgh In addItIon to has Inestlmable work In the math department Mr Black has had an actIve part In many extra currIcular ac TIVITIBS He has sponsored many senIor classes and carrIed out admIrably all the responsIbIIItIes that sponsorshIp entaIls such as numerous senIor dances and f1ne commencement programs He IS also credlted wIth the Introduchon of chess In the PIttsburgh Publuc Schools Under hIs leadershIp pIonshIp an honor coveted by all hlgh school enthuslasts of thIs game of oguc In hIs earller days at South Mr Black dIrected a hlgh school mIlItary drIll team and was so to speak a ploneer and precursor of the ROTC drIll teams whIch are now seen on college campuses As proof of has many dIverse Interests he also sponsored one of the two lIterary SOCIETIES here atSouth But durIng has long career at South Mr Black has always shown hIm self to be far more than lust a teacher He has gaIned a well deserved and envIable reputatIon for beIng a good frIend to hIs puplls He has wldened hIs professlonal scope untIl It has Included a personal Interest In hIs students also He has made Invaluable contrubutlons to our school and we shall mlss hIm ln addItIon to hIs many honorable posItIons he was elected PresIdent of the PIttsburgh Teachers ASSOCIGTIOH In 1951 and served In that capacIty untll February 1953 PFSVIOUS to thIs tame he had been treasurer of the AssocIatIon for four years and a member of the salary commIttee for ten years HIs work accomplIshed Mr Black can look back upon a worth whIIe experuence In the educatIonal f1eld As he and hIs charmlng wIfe contem plate the future In theIr new home under the sunny skIes of Floruda the faculty and student body of South HIgh smcerely wlsh them the well earned 'oy and happIness whIch they deserve 6 O . , ' , .
