McLaughlin Our Principal To the Graduating Classes: You have asked me to write a farewell note for your Class Book and l can not refuse. Farewell has so much of finality in its meaning and its sound. lt brings so much of the thought of parting and diverging paths that l want to use a substitute phrase that has in it a rich, subtle expression and suggestion of a hope that the future holds for you happy, prosperous days when we shall again renew old friendships, and then again say the words l write now - au revoir. Sincerely, I. M. MCLAUGHLIN, Principal. it 12 ...- 1937,-.111 To the Graduates of the Year 1936-l937: l congratulate you and wish for each of you a long, happy and useful life. Every individual ought to resolve and strive and determine to do more and be more than he is. You owe it to the world to give not simply the best of which you are capable but the best to which you can possibly aspire.--George K. Knox. Yours truly, H. H. IOHNSON. She has left behind in Rosedale High her girl friend, Susie. Madge promises to write each month and does so as follows: South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. '- September 30, 1936 Dear Susie: - You know I promised you when I left Rosedale to write a monthly letter to let you know how things were going in school. We finally found a place to live and the School, of the many in Pittsburgh, which I attend, is called South High. It is located on Tenth and Carson Streets. Let me tell you something about our school. It has an enrollment of some 2,200 stu- dents. South High consists of two buildings, an old one and a new one. The new building recently has had additions in the rear creating a maze of hallways. I was confused for days but I now know my way around. Boy, O Boyl Did I have a time getting my schedule fixedl There was a question ol my record at Rosedale High and the number of credits I needed to graduate here next Iune. Finally things were arranged. Am I happyl Mr. McLaughlin, principal and Mr. Iohnson, vice principal, extended their first greet- ing to all South High students, both old and new at the first assembly. This was the best quotation in the two speeches: Each day I will beat my own record. I think I will try that. The Oriole News, our school paper, is now having a campaign to secure more sub- scribers. - I must tell you about the Football Rally. In the assembly I saw the handsomest, dark haired boy. He is just divine. I would certainly love to meet him. Perhaps some of the girls in our class know him. I overheard some boys talking about him and from their conver- sation I think he is a star football halt-back. Wish me luck. Rah-Rah-'there I go again. All night long I keep repeating those cheers in my sleep. The Oriole printed a group ol football cheers and I am trying to leam them so I can cheer that big handsome hero of mine on to victtory. Let me know what's new at Rosedal High. You can expect another letter from me at the end of October. Yours sincerely, MADGE i.57.... l937 -...ll ORIOLE --1,-. South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. October 31, 1936 Dear Susie: October has been a very exciting month. Every day has been full of interesting happenings. The Board of Education has adopted a new grading system for all the schools here in Pittsburgh. The grades are U, unsatisfactory, S, satisfactory, and A, honor. The old sys- tem was like ours at Rosedale. I do hope that I can get a lot off A's. I'1l need them if I want to get on the honor roll. The Student Council elected Frank Ratterson as president for this seme-ster. The formal installation of the Student Council was a striking ceremony. First came Edith Muser, the Spirit of South High School, robed in white. Sh was followed by students robed in black representing the various virtues such as Honesty, Obedience, Service, Patience, Dependability, and Courtesy. As a whole, the program- was very inspiring. I had been warned by the pupils that we would have to prepare a traffic essay on October l2th. However a questionaire was submitted to each of us instead. I had a little trouble with a few questions but after all anything is better than writing a traffic essay. We had a grand assembly with Dr. Howard Griggs as the speaker. He spoke on Love as the Greatest Power, and the spirit of it seemed to grip the whole oudience. It was not the petty type of love he spoke of but love of beauty, nature, and personalties. You really should have heard him because he changed the attitude of those who heard him concerning the real meaning of love. I had the thrill of my life the other day. I was introduced to the Football hero. The best is yet to come. He actually took me to the show fl still havn't recoveredl. I won't tell you his name yet, but, believe you me, he knows his football. He told me that he is going to be the first high school student to ever be considered for the All Ameri- can Team. Now you know why I am so interested in football. Another lucky boy was George Klotbaugh who was elected Senior A class president. George is a great favorite with every one and I am sure the class is well represented. I just have time to brush up a little before my hero arrives. Tell me all the Rosedale news and hurry up and write. Your loving friend, MADGE South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. November,,30, 1936 Dear Susie: Time certainly does fly, doesn't it? You see we had so many lively activities here at South that I could hardly wait to tell you all about them. I wish you could have heard Mrs. Iill Edwards who spoke to us in the assembly on the Value of Personality. She is a very charming person, full of vitality and a very interest- ing speaker. I think her address was as affective as that of Dr. Griggs. ln bidding us good-bye she wished us good luck and happiness in Chinese. Iames Shanks was elected president of the Senior B's on the 20th. Now the Senior B's are ready for action. I wonder how much they will accomplish? You asked me to tell you something more about our sports activities. The boys of our team became victors over the boys of Fifth Avenue High Schol. The handsome young hero of mine turned out to be only a substitute. The only thing he can do is warm the bench and as far as I am concerned he can keep warming it. I thought that he was on the first team after the line he gave me about the way he could carry the ball over the goal line for a touchdown every time he received it. Was I burned upl I never want to speak to him again. Imagine my chagrin when I found out there wasn't such a thing as an All American School Team. The boys aren't the only ones who were victorious. The ninth and tenth grade mer- maids won all the sectional preliminary trials. They sure are good swimmers and the city champs tool You know that during this month we celebrated National Education Week. All the schools in Pittsburgh put displays in their neighborhood store windows. The Oriole printed a six page issue telling all about it. .-....5g...- ...i....,l937 ii.. DRIOI-E 4-1.1 The class play, to be given by the Seniors, promises to be a hilarious and side- splitting comedy. I can't wait until December when I can go to see it. I shall write and tell you all about it in my December letter. Until then, I remain, Your loving friend, ' MADGE South High School Tenth and Carson Streets I Pittsburgh, Pa. December 23, 1936 Dear Susie: ' Although I am coming back to Rosedale to spend the Christmas Holidays with you, there are some things I must tell you before I get there. Santa has visited our school early this year it we consider the honors that have been bestowed on the students and an alumnus ot our school. Honors have been announc- ed, and you should have seen the Seniors hold their breath. Esther Groenert got highest honors with George Klotbaugh, Anna Manko, and Frank Pattedson getting the high honors. The honor students were Anna Chasey, Ernest Iuha, Henry Charley, Rachel Hartly, Lucille Gorcey, Ruth Meussner and Edith Stegner. Felix Kierbicz, a very excellent swimmer, won two scholarships. Imaginel One to Augusta Military Academy, Fort Defiance, Virginia and later he will enter Syracuse Uni- versity at Syracuse, New York. Another honor was announced to a former member oi the State championship Team- Chippers Miskevics who has been elected captain ot Carnegie Tech Football Team for 1937. Lucky boys. The Class Play, The Yankee King, was very good with William I-Iartlep and Anna Manko in the leading roles. That pistol scenel Talk about gangstersl Student Council had a cheer contest. Although I entered, I didn't win. No wonder, picture me writing a cheerl There were three iirst prizes-season basketball passes. Mary Balinski, Genevieve Iagmin and Frank Semich won those. Several other students were awarded single game tickets. Don't you wish you could go to South? -- That football scrub is still pestering me. Now he wants to take me to their prom. I'd love to go, but not with him. We're going to be guests ot the Iuniors oi which class Edward Masai was elected president. I haven't said that I'll go with him yet, but I prob- ably will if I don't get a better invite. See you soon, MADGE South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. Ianuary 31, 1937 Dear Susie: This has been a hectic month with the ilu epidemic, the Senior activities, and bas- ket ball games. To begin with I served at the Senior Tea which is one oi the events the Senior Girls look forward to. The ilu put an end to several customary activities. One ot them was the Senior Class Day Program. Instead the Seniors had a party. No Senior B's. Was I disappointed? They had refreshments and dancing. You know how I hate both? On top oi this we had an amateur program full oi hilarious entertainment. Iames Layton won the single award with his song Shortenin Bread which he accompanied with a dance. The Polish dancers won the group prizes. They were really good. Today was rather a sad day. We bid the Seniors good-bye. Almost had to swim our way out. Some oi the Senior B's spoke on the scholarship, athletics, and the extra curri- cular activities ot the Seniors. Then the unseliish service medals were given to Frank Patterson and Esther Groenert. Commencement is to be held on the 26th. The theme of the-,program is to be The Observation of the Sesqui-Centennial of the Founding of the'Censt-itution. There -1.591 ...l,T-l937i,-...i- -L... GRIOI-E ..-.-... will be two grand speeches and a play. lt sounds interesting, doesn't it? The best is yet to come! South has a grand basketball team. We just won two league games from Schenley and Peabody..Before these, Boswell and Brentwood fell vic- tims. Your loving friend, MADGE P.S.-The games and Prom have been called off for a time because of the Flu Epidemic, worse luck! South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. February, 26, 1937 Dear Susie: Although February may seem a very short month, it certainly is crammed full. I've so much to tell you I don't know where to begin. Well, first of all you must hear about our basketball team. It's swell. So far it has won every league game, and by defeating Allderdice, our toughest opponent, on Friday, the 27th, they clinched the city champion- ship of Section I. All you hear around school is basketball, but why not? Of course, you know we had mid-year promotipn and right now everybody has settled down into the general routine. We have a new system by which it is almost im- possible to change schedule the way we did at Rosedale. We had only two changes in the faculty, Miss Levin, a type teacher from Herron Hill, and Miss Brosky, who formerly taught at South, but who returned from Knoxville after one semester's absence. The Student Council elected officers and George Shafer was chosen as president and for his assistants, George Erdel, vice-president, Iean Schaefer, secretary, Anna Mae Men- zenmaier, treasurer, Ella Mae Dittmer, Oriole Reporter. One of my teachers, as president of the Women's Overseas Service League, spoke on a national radio hookup over KDKA, Maybe you heard her. She talked on the opera- tion and purposes of the organization. Have I told you about the basketball star. My dear, he is so handsome and what a dancerl You've never danced until you've stepped with him. I've been going to see all the games. Of course it is just my school spirit, nothing else. Not much else to tell you now but I'll have loads to tell you soon. Write! Toodle-oo-o-o-o MADGE P.S.-About that basketball star, I forgot to mention that I'm waiting for a dance. All I know about him is what the other girls tell me. But I have hopes. South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. April 2, 1937 Dear Susie: You must really forgive me for letting this letter run over into April. You'll under- stand as I go on. To-day we had the most exciting time, the business men of? the South Side sponsored a parade for South because of the team winning the State Basketball Title Everybody was decked out in orange and black-our school colors, you know. There were three bands, our own, the American Legion and Brentwood High's Band. We had school till 1:10 and we paraded until about 3:45. The best part of the parade was the moving pictures which were taken by Mr. Finkel, owner of the Arcade and Colonial Theaters, and he showed them at the Arcade for a week. Mayor Scully met the team at the courthouse and congratulated them, with the whole sudent body crowding around. Not only did we have the Big Parade, but after the games at Pitt Stadium we paraded home. The parade was just a grand conclusion to a great achievement. Let me tell you South won the City Title by defeating Allegheny 2 out of 3. Were we chagrined when South lost the second game? South went on to defeat Sharon and to wallop Altoona at State College. I saw the Altoona game but I was unable to see the State Title game which was also played at Penn State. After defeating Altoona we were the Western ........50.... ... l937,......l. ....l,..l, l. i Pennsylvania Champs and eligible to play Newport and did our team show them who could play basketball? flncidentally Newport was last year's state champ.J In celebration of the victory we had a big two and half hour assembly with Mayor Scully: Doc Carlson. Pitt University basketball coachg Paul Kurtz, sports reporter, Dr. Guy, associate superintendent of Pittsburgh schools: Mr. Walsh, of the Physical Training De- partment, and Mr. Fred Breitwiesser, president of the South Side Business Men's Associa- tiong also a great many business men of the South Side. It was more fung the trophies were presented, medals were given to the team, cheers for everybody, and speeches, speeches, and more speeches. Nothing else has happened because we have been eating, thinking and living basketball around school. You remember my basketball hero. Well, I still haven't met him worse luck. Everybody seems to like him and I don't know what to do, but I'm not appeal- ing to Dorothy Dix. I might mention that our band was sent to State College by the business men twice. Wasn't that perfectly swell of them. Honestly I don't believe we'll ever be able to tell them how much we appreciate their doing that for us. They were just as enthused about it as we were. It's the second time South has brought the State Title to Pittsburgh, and thus far, is the only city school to accomplish it. Not bad, eh? I'll close now but by the end of the month I shall have lots more to tell you. How's everything in Rosedale? It seems ages since I've been there. Hurry and write, I'm dying to hear all the news. Yours still- MADGE P. S.-Incidentally reports came out this month, but only incidentally. South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. April 30, 1937 Dear Susie: ' Thanks loads for writing so soon. I couldn't wait to answer you so here goes. You're not the only one who has been having fun. So have I and the best is yet to come. I do so hope you have as much fun at your picnic as we plan to have' on our boat ride. There I go wandering again. I should have told you that the Board of Education will give us a half a day off for a boatride, and plans are being made. It is to be on Iune ll from l:30 to 6:30. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Now that we only have two months lett, more things are happening. The South Side Exchange Club held a fellowship dinner which they plan to make an annual affair. About ninety students were chosen from the student body to attend the dinner. St. Michael's High School also had representation. Iudge Moore of Common Pleas Court was the guest speaker and he certainly was grand. George Schafer, our council president, and Collette Szafranski, student president from St. Michael's, also spoke. On April 20 we heard Major james Isherwood give a talk on I'Americanism . It surely made me glad I was attending a high school here in America. Another big event at the school was the Iunior Prom at which the Seniors were the guests. We had a very fine W.P.A. orchestra and the Gym was decorated beautfiully. I had every dance, which reminds me that I went with that sub and I was glad I did because it seems he isn't such a bad baseball player. Although he is just a substitute, I know how important a good substitute is. The Seniors elected officers and Edmund Finn was chosen president with Lorraine Grow vice-preisdent, Gertrude Bozic secretary, and Helen DeBald treasurer. We also chose class colors. They are to be green and white. The cast has been selected for the class play which is to be held on May 28. You might be able to see it it your school closes as soon as it did last year. It is to be Shake- speare's Twelfth Night. I've practically told you everything except that I'm trying out for a scholarship and am I worried! Au Revoir. MADGE .i..51.ii. ,, Q-l--l--.Tli ...il ORIOLE South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. May 31, 1937 Dear Susie: I would have written sooner but I was terribly busy. Thanks loads for the telegram you sent. Although I only had a minor part in the play your message certainly gave cour- age. I was so sorry you couldn't get to Pittsburgh because everything went off perfectly, or I better say, almost perfectly. The funniest thing happened. The play went along very smoothly until the third act, then things began to buzz. It was where that dueling between Sir Andrew and Viola takes places. You remember the story. Anyway, Viola was to break away from Fabian but she broke away too quickly and before he knew it poor Fabian was sprawled on the floor. Mr. Thompson and those behind the curtains held their breath but the audience, not suspecting a thing laughed hilariously, believing it a part of the play. . Oliva had her share of trouble too. On one side ot the stage there was a very high pair of steps supposedly leading into Olivia's house but in reality to a very steep ladder vzhith was the easiest thing in the world to fall from. On one of Olivia's descents she caught her heel in her dress and luckily two stage hands caught her. The stage itself had a complete remodeling at a very great expense to the Board of Education. The whole lighting system was changed. Entirely new spotlights and foot- lights were installed. Rather nice don't you think? We took the state test on the seventh and if I said it was tough that would be put- ting it mildly. It lasted from 9:45 A.M. to 1:45 P.M. Can you imagine? The results are to be announced later. Hurry and answer, I have to get ready to leave for school, so till the next time Au Revoir, MADGE South High School Tenth and Carson Streets Pittsburgh, Pa. Iune 28, 1937 Dear Susie: Hello again. Received your letter yesterday and decided to write before I forgot it. Has this been a hectic month or has it? To begin with we had the boatride which was more fun. A boat with five decks, a huge dance floor, and an eleven piece orchestra, a Utopia or maybe I'm wrong. We left at 1:30 P.M. and got back at 6:30. We tore around the decks or danced all the time. By the time I finally reached home I was practically dead. . Not only did we have a grand boatride but the Chess Club members had a picnic, at South Park. First of all I played tennis INot even you can' imagine how badlyl. After a very energetic game I decided to go horseback riding tor a bit oi relaxation. 1 could hardly stand up or sit down when I was through. I We had quite a sendoif at the Senior Farewell Program and at the Senior Girls' tea. This whole month, although full of excitement, was sad: it makes me realize that never again will I have such wonderful experiences. We had Convocation, that is a huge assembly ot all the city high school graduates at the Syria Mosque, one of the an- naul affairs. It was a very impressive ceremony. The real Senior exercises were held on Class Day our last day of school. We had a grand celebration with all the Seniors decked out in green and white, our class colors. After school of the same day we had a party in the gym with refreshments. Although rather jovial, yet, it was quite sorrowful. ' Lastly came commencement. I hated to see it comep it was actually the end. I dis- like endings, especially of something that has meant so much to me. After the exercises I went to a graduation party with my friend. I had a grand time. I'll closle now as I'll see you in about a week when I get to Rosedale. Goodbye, MADGE -.i I 52 1.. 1937 r Pa Hinkle .. .. .. ., . -.. William Hartlep ll... ORIOLE .. - . February 337 Class Play . THE YANKEE KING Climaxing several weeks of intense rehearsals under Miss Frost, the Graduating Class of February '37 presented a successful comedy the evening of December ll, 1936. With William Hartlep and Anna Manko, as Pa and Ma Hinkle, in the stellar roles, ably supported by students chosen to fit the parts, The Yankee King proved a produc tion which gave an evening of ample enjoyment to both young and old. The Hinkle family consisting of Ma Hinkle, Pa Hinkle, Marian and Wilbur are gathered in the living room of their home discussing plans for the evening. It is finally decided that all except Pa Hinkle should attend the movies. They depart, accompanied by Wayne Douglas, fiance of Marian. Pa falls asleep. In his dream Pa finds himself suddenly made the Kiing of Laurania. TWELFTH NIGHT On Thursday night, May 27, a capacity throng in the South High Auditorium thrilled to the presentation of Twelfth Night, the senior class play of the l937 class. Although this marked the first time in over a score of years that a Shakespearean play had been presented at South, the performance was an excellent one with marvelous portrayal of all characters by the ambitious juvenile actors. Richard K. Thompson was the dramatic coach of the play to whom credit is due. Certain girls in Miss Sawhill's sewing classes were instrumental in providing the cast with the colorful costumes so necessary in a Shakespearean performance. New scenic arrangements and various other aids to the production of the work made it a very enjoyable and pleasing dramatic piece. In the play itself comedy was abundantly supplied by Sir Toby and Malvolio, while Duke Orsino played the role of the hero, Olivia, a beautiful and charming lady, was the object of his affection. Viola was a sprightly, attractive maid who appeared in the play in the guise of a boy. Duke Orsino, although regarding her as a boy in the earlier portion of the drama, later finds that he loves her dearly. The delineation of Shakespearean characters, although a difficult task for young actors, was nobly accomplished by the Senior A's. The organization is a representative body working always for the best interests of the school. In conjunction with the faculty the Council governs in effective style the pupils of the school. This work is accomplished through the agency of a number of committees and is planned and passed upon first by the Executive Board of the Council. A Benefit Program in the form of an Amateur Performance, the sale of candy at basketball games, a series of lurxcheons improvements, direction of a Fellowship Banquet and the sponsoring of CI boat ride for the entire school were the major projects taken up by the Council this Year, The success of the organization is due not little to the untiring efforts of its capable sponsors, Mrs. Worley, and Mr. MacDonald, and to its able officers. ...ini --.--lonnomn.-3-.- ..CL BS.. Upon the orders issued some time ago to our activity advisor, Mr. MacDonald, by Dr. Graham, superintendent of public schools, a system has been devised which enables all clubs to be held on the same day. Thursday of each week has been chosen as club clay with most of the clubs meeting on alternate weeks. Due to this novel and efficient system, much confusion and many mix-ups are averted. This method helps the pupils to become better acquainted with their own classmates as they are now compelled to remain in their own home rooms on all other days, unless they seek special permission from the teachers to go elsewhere. ln addition to the change in meetings many revisions have occurred in the clubs themselves. A good ex- ample of this is shown by the joining of two separate organizations, the Ayita and Philo, into one big group now known as the Phileta Literary Society. A few teachers have found it necessary to discontinue the meetings of certain clubs because they are too busy with other school work. Among those clubs found on the discontinued list are Nature, Stamp, and A.B.C. Clubs. At the same time several clubs have been newly organized, namely the Chorus, which has already gained much popularity with members of both sexesg the Senior Hi-Y, much in demand by the boys and the Ir. Air Craft, which will in all probobility turn out very promising and expert aviators. All those concerned with club activities at Our School feel that this new method will prove both satisfactory and effective. -4-1-l937,-,-1...- PSYCHOLOGY Group l President-Norbert Michclskx Vice-President-Frank Aurilla Secretory-Virginia Gallag- her Assistant Secretory - Mike Mirchich Librarian-Victoria Spcxk Scxrqent-ot-Arms - Eugene Williams, Ed. FOOTB LL Late in August, Coach Grover Washabaugh assembled over sixty-five grid aspirants at Langley Field for the initial practice session of the '36 football session. An embryo group of fifteen players remained from the previous season's squad. After innumerable drill sessions and successive cuts the squad was reduced to thirty-six capable gridders. The opening game with Oliver showed South the better of the two teams but neither one could put the pigskin across the goal line. South then traveled to Mt. Pleasant to be guests of Hurst High. The visitors showed their superiority by overcoming their hosts 7-0. Next in line came two successive defeats at the hands of Westinghouse and Ali- quippct, Once again the Orioles were the aggressors in a scoreless tie-Peabody being the opponents. For the second and final time of the season the Orange and Black tasted victory by a 7-O decision over Fifth Avenue. The concluding fray found South dropping another contest, this one to the Taylor Allderdice Dragons . Considering the lack of playing facilities, the Washabaugh proteges did well in winning two and tying two. The Orioles made a better showing this season than last in that they reduced their opponents pointage 34 points while increasing their own by 13 points. William Patterson, sterling linesman, was chosen for one of the tackle positions on the All City Team while Walko, Spak, and Neiber received Honorable Mention. ORIULE ll A S K E T B L L The 1937 Season Of the strong '36 basketball squad, 10 members including 4 of the starting lineup, returned for service during the present season. After a month and a half of intensive training a squad of thirteen members was ready for the hard seasonal grind. Of five non-league games played, only the Alumni succeeded in overcoming the strong Oriole aggregation. The Alumni trotted out stars of the '34 Championship Team and were able to win by only 2 points. ln regular league competition, the Orioles for a short time shared the Section I leadership with Allderdice and Westinghouse. With first place in a three way tie the schedule was temporarily halted because of an influenza epidemic. After the resumption of play the Orioles forged ahead and led the field at the halfway mark with six wins and no defeats. - The second half of the league schedule was merely a repetition of the first with the Orange and Black reaching tl'-sir peak in a 56-14 win over Fifth Avenue. The finish of the second half saw South far ahead of the others with 12 wins and no defeats for an unblem- ished record. With the Section I laurels won, South was next to engage Allegheny, the Section II winners, for the City Crown. .........87 . .,.-l937 iii- .ll URIOLE -W-W-n City Championshqn Series With the Section I crown under their belt, the Orioles advanced into the City titu- lar playoffs with Allegheny, the Section ll leader, as their foe. The series was a best-out-of-three affair, with the first fray taking place on Monday, March 8, at the Pitt Stadium. Displaying the same form that carried them so successfully through the regular season, South flashed a 40-20 victory over Allegheny. A barrage of field goals and unerring charity tosses gave the Southsiders their excessive twenty points. For Allegheny it was the initial defeat of the season. Allegheny showed dogged determination by displaying a comeback spurt and taking the second game of the series, 35-30. Continually hounding the ball the Allegheny lads were never headed during the entire contest. Both teams were eager to triumph in the final and deciding game, but the supreme tloorwork and the impenetrable defense of the Southonians could not be matched and the Orioles were victorious, 32-22. Thus, after an absence of three years the City Title was returned to South High. Winning the City Title earned South the right to represent District Vlll in the Western Regional Championship play-offs. Scores lst Game-South 40 .......... Allegheny 20 2nd Game-South 30 .... .... Because of the prolonged City Championship Series the Southsiders drew a bye in the first P.I.A.A. playoff. In the Western Regional Semi-Finals, South met and defeated Sharon High at the Pitt Stadium. With the final score 30-28, this game was probably the most difficult encounter of the season. This win made South a Western Regional finalist and gave them the right to meet Altoona for the Regional honors. P.I.A.A. officials set the location of the finals at State College and the entire squad of l3 members journeyed to Penn State. Playing the best basketball of the '37 season South defeated the Altoona passers 37-20. Upon winning the Altoona fray the Orioles returned to Pittsburgh where the State Finals were to be played, but due to the complaints of Newport, their opponents, the site was changed to State College. The sudden change of location and the long journey placed an undue strain upon the South lads and might have easily influenced their game except tor the untiring efforts of the coach Grover C. Washabaugh. Clirnaxing a season of brilliant victories, the South High team defeated Newport 38-28 to become the Pennsyl- vania interscholastic Athletic Association Champions. It was the second time in four years that the Southsiders had realized the State title.
