«;• occer Excels We ' re No.1!!! h Soccer team was the most successful that South has ever had. With 28 wins anjd one tie, the team won the second C.I.F. Soccer championship attaFned by South. Before league play began, the Varsity team won the Damielf Tournament. They won consolation bracket A in our own South High Christmas Tournament while the Junior Varsity won bracket The Varsity team did not win the Tournament title due to the one tie of the season, 0-0, against Claremont. ,4%- Peter Adamson and John Sloway both made the Ali-Tounip j team. At Damien, Don Pepe and Anthony Maggio rn ' Ml- ' iToy(r|ament along with Adamson and Sloway. Later, Jim tMJjen was chosen ' AllMrtfierican, the only player this year in Soutl rn Cait- fornia to receive such an honor. After taking the Bay title undefeated, South went into an jUffing series of play-off games. ' c dily They beat Hawthorne, 3-0, and went on to play-lalesrafi J . West. Both games went into overtime producing South victories that sent South into the finals. The chance to avenge the one tie, preventing a 29-0-0 perfect - record, finally came. Claremont, responsible for the 0-0 tie, was the other team in the finals. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie. The game almost looked equal the second half when South zoomed into a 4-1 lead. Claremont scored once more and the game ended, 4-2. Coach Bryant said that the Best team won. And South, rated 1 it .F. throughout the entire year, was aefinitely the best team jBP Ninejpiayers were named All-Bay League (Six on the first and three CMTthe second team). At tfj top of the list was Player of the year, Jim Alien.
