FROM ITALY came South H' h' f ig s irst foreign exchange student, Paul Bedeschi. While in the United States under the American Field Service program, he lived with a local family. Though here for only a short time, he gained many friends. ln America as in Italy he showed that he was a scholar. During Christmas vacation he was called home because of a serious illness in his family, and although he hoped to return to finish the school h year e was unable to do so. Before his sen- ior year Mike spent the summer in Finland. He sailed to Europe with the other American ex- change students and lived with a foster family in a small city north of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The trip was one of his greatest experiences, reported Mike, and it heightened not only his understanding of other peoples but of his own country. One of the most inspiring sights of the entire trip was sailing into New York harbor and seeing the Statue of Liberty extending a welcome. 87

JUST BEING A GIRLS' STATER WAS A COURSE IN CITIZENSHIP, said Jackie Urban. Last Spring the faculty chose Jackie on the basis of leadership and scholarship to represent South High at the annual summer meetings of California Girls' State. ln June Jackie met with hundreds of fellow seniors-to-be at the Davis campus of the University of California, near Sacramento. To learn by doing, the organization's motto, was put into vp practice when full-scale state, county and city governments were set up. In addition to actively participating in government, the girls attended daily lectures. v-.v r I xxx s X u N .5 wk' 5 Qs. 61.72 . I . .0 - r i -'V N' ' f9f 'W': ' IT WAS GREAT to be able to panticipate in state government, said Otto Ledford, South High's T959 representative to California Boys' State. Otto was one of 840 boys who spent nine days at the state capital in Sacramen- to last June. He was chosen by the faculty because of out- standing scholastic and athletic achievements.
