CAGERS TAKE STATE RUNNER-UP CHAMPIONSHIP The South High Bulldogs finished runners-up in the State Basketball Tournament held in Cleveland, Ohio. This was the first time a Bulldog team goft to the State finals. The Bulldogs fell on the short end of a 66-56 score to powerful Hamilton Public in the final game. Alex Boo Ellis was the chief menace to the-Bulldogs as he rang the bell for fouling of the Bulldogs, as Frank Howard, 2:50 mark of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs gained the berth to the finals by downing game. For the finals, Hamilton was favored to win the ballgame 68-67. 27 markers. The defeat was really blamed on the excessive Stan Owens, and jumping jack Sam Pointer fouled out in succession after the Kent Roosevelt, 50-35, in a somewhat dull defensive type of although the Bulldogs upset the Big Blue earlier in the season After finishing second in the Cirty League, with North on top, South defeated Newark, Linden, and North, the latter being the best-played game of the year, to win the District Championship. Then the Bulldogs traveled to Toledo t. . . P lif. elf .X ix Coach Ceorge Pug S and defeated Defi ance and Toledo Macomber to win the regional toumament, setting the stage for the State finals in Cleveland. The Blue and Gray p-laced three boys on the various All-Tournament, All- State, and City Teams, Capt. Benny Wright, Sam Pointer, and Frank Howard. Sam Pointer was named the most outstanding player in the state tournament by the International News Service. South enjoyed many fine trips throughout their season, going to Middletown, Zanesville, Mansfield, Toledo, and Cleveland. ' For the season as a whole, the Bulldogs compiled 22 wins and 5 losses. The team all year long showed fine sportsmanship and good manners, plus good coaching on the floor. These could very well be the words of Coa-ch Pug Hood, as he will lose five of his top-notch basketball players via gradugtion. These fellows will be sorely missed when the 1954-55 season rolls aroun . Heading the list of seniors is Captain Benny Wright. Benny has been a member of the varsity for three years, and has played on two championship teams during that time. Next is George Langley, who didn't see too much action during the regular season but came along brilliantly in some -of the anxious mom.ents of the Regionals and State Tournament play. Then there's Stanley Owens, the big boy who really hit his stride in the finals of the District and helped the Bulldogs down the home stretch, in quest of the State Title. Quincy Duce Dunn, who didn,t play last year because of an ankle injury, became very strong and proved to be a vital cog in the Bulldog machine. Last, bu-t certainly not the least, is big Frank Chico,' Howard. Chico and Clarence Pointer were the 1-2 scoring punch of the Bulldogs. Big Chic holds the all-time District Class A scoring record.
