Our other contributing editors were Caryl Coverdale, Mary Lou Clark, Paula Gatewood, Iean Robins, Marlene Swisher, Ianis'Reese and Ieanne Wilson. The photography for our yearbook was done by C. G. Huber has been prin- cipal at South for two years, and in that time he has helped many students see life clearly and get the most opportunities out of it. Mr. Huber had much experience as a teacher and principal before coming to South. Mr. Huber's favorite pastimes are gardening and spending time with his family. In what spare time that he has left, he is a writer. He recently wrote and had published a 54-page booklet en- titled As the Twig Is Bent. The booklet deals with problems that parents have in rearing children. Being a father of three children himself, Mr. Huber is considered an authority on children and young people. Another of our principal's out- side interests is giving speeches on the upbringing of children. He speaks at churches and P. T, A. meetings whenever his schedule permits him. One of Mr. Huber's important aims is to help students achieve the highest goals in life. Pollock Paper Co. that took his life. He died on june 19, 1953. r Barney was a member of the varsity football and basketball team, and he was crowned king of the Backward Ball last year. 'Tis not the length of time that counts the most, But how heilived those years he spent on earth, the friends he left, pi The little ways he had to win our love and leave with us a host of little memories to prize. Page Seventeen 'l'l'm fins- he rnnrla nfmnno' no .cfrnnaar cn-n4n Midyear Prophecy The movie camera is focused on City Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, 1964. My photographer and I were just called to the hospital because Donna Ioiiner, the star of the Thompson Uackl and Thompson Giml Motion Picture Studio, has injured her leg while shooting a film. The title of her new movie is The Big Squeeze, which was written by Rudy Raduegge. Donna's doctor is jim Myers, the bone spe- cialist, who is assisted in his work by the registered nurses, Barbara Canter and Lola Oelfler. As we entered the hospital and looked down the hall, we saw Kathy Reiss and Joyce Buchanan scrubbing and waxing the floors of a complete ward. This was their punishment for neglecting to perform their duties. Passing them, we then approached the hospital kitchen where we saw Etna Schumm preparing dinner from a newly-published recipe book, Delightful Ways to Prepare Dinnerf, which was written by the home economist, Orville Iarrell. Phil Zauderer and Wayne Young were cleaning the pots and pans. As we happened to glance out of the window, we saw Charles Blizzard and Lee Salyer pulling Helen Bajus out of the cement where she had just been asked by Mayor Dean Stavrides to make a footprint, since she was the founder of the hospital. While looking over the crowd that had gathered to see the hospital dedication, we saw Ronald Horcher who was now the Governor of Ohio, Pete.Giddens, superintendent of the Boys, Industrial Schpiol in Lancaster, and Annette Woodward who is now playing iirst violin in the New York Symphony Orc estra. As we proceeded down the corridor on our way to Donna's room, we passed the recreation room. We decided to go in and see if we knew anyone in there. We then saw Bob Huskey who was re- cuperating after spraining his wrist while playing the drums. He has his own band now and they travel all over the U.S. joe Piccione is also a member of his group. They recently completed a tour which took them all the way to Los Angeles, California, where they performed at the McGory CSusanJ jazz Theatre. Bob told us that Mary Eichenberger and Roberta Rosenauer are now very famous cover girls on the coast. They are graduates of the DeWitt CFredJ Modeling School. After we left the recreation room, we proceeded on our way to Donnais room. My photographer, Dick Byrd, took some pictures of her to show in the local movie houses. She told us that George Cook was working at the movie studio as prop man and Frank Reeves was sports director. After leaving Donna's room we were assigned to cover the socialite wedding of Pat Lahey and! Howard Kimberly. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. David Steinmetz, who had completed his studies to be a minister in half the time that it usually takes. Some of guests at the wedding included Jim Wonder, a movie director, Fred Smith, now the owner of Smith's Dry Cleaneris and Shirley Rose who is now a teller at the Chapman Savings and Trust Bank which is owned and operated by john Chapan. john told us that Barbara Gordon is now working at the Bornstein fWillardj Restaurant and Food Sup- ply Co. Sally Sherman and Gail Binkley are working as clerks in the order department. Willard Bornstein told us that Bob McLeod has just received a plaque for winning first place in an archery contest. Donna Miller and Nellie Schmitt placed first and second, respectively. The contest was sponsored by the Wesney Manufacturing Co. Marlene Wesney is the founder and president of the company and Margaret Murgatroyed is the Erst vice president. As we watched the ,wedding party walk in, we saw that Carla Kuepfer was maid of honor in a stun- ning Pat Smith original designed by Patricia Smith. The dress was made of ivory satin and lace and had been shipped to Columbus by the Stewart fBilD Shipping Co. and delivered to the church by the Teal fDickJ Cab Co. After leaving the wedding my photographer and I proceeded to the sports arena where they were having a basketball game between South and North. This is the Hrst game to be played in the arena, which was donated to Columbus by Bob Wagoner, the owner of the Wagoner Dept. Store. The referees of the game were Bill Shinn and Ion Sagester. We also saw our old classmates, Jack Phillips and Ron- nie Callander, who now are reporting for the New York Times. Looking over the spectators we saw jean Thompson, the world famous bowling champion, and Donna Iackson, who is a police woman in Cleveland, Ohio. Donna told us that Ann Hughes and jerry Hughes were working as chemical engineers at the Freedman fMortonD Paint Co. Barbara Howell is a secretary at the same company. While we were still at the restaurant eating, we saw Lucille Cacciatore come in with her campaign manager, Pat Hedegus, Lucille is running for Lt. Gov. of Ohio for the second term. She told us that she had just returned from New York where she appeared on a T. V. program called, Adults Take A Standf' One of the stewardesses on the plane was Barbara Biete. Lucille saw a talent show while she was in New York and the headliners were Ann Cook, Alice Byrd, .and Norma Moore. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Betty Hicks and Millie Claar was the musical director. Pat Norris was also on the ro ram. P gAfter leaving the restaurant we returned to the movie studio. My business manager, Ronnie Basler, told me that the academy award winner, lim Bope, had called, inviting us to a party for the South High graduating class of Ian.. 1954. The guests of honor were Harold Harris and Charles Case, who had finally graduated from business college. ..-.. David Wooley, who is now a chemistry professor at Michigan State University, IS flying in on the Case CCharlesl Airlines to be able to attend the Alumni banquet. . . As I returned to my desk I thought about all the wonderful times we had during our four years at South High School. Rnhnrm Dworkin IUNE CLASS' OFFICERS Heading the Iune graduating class of 1954 was Benny Wright. Benny was very active in sports. In his senior year he was co-captain of our championship basketball team and was one of the high scorers on our team. Helping Benny in his job was Ann Chamberlain. Ann was head cheerleader and was our 1953 Home- coming Queen. Havinlg the job of keeping the class books up to date an arranging dates for this and that was the job of Kay Shaulis, senior class secretary. Kay was active in G.A.A. and other school activities. Gene Dixon, senior treasurer, was kept busy col- lecting all the money. This is the city, year-1964. My name is Benny J. Wright. I'm a cop. Dum-de- um- um. 8:30 A. M.-Arrived at headquarters-met my partner Earl Smith and settled down for a day s.work. 8:35-Received a call from switchboard operator, Mary Lou Clark, saying that Judge Richard Garner had invited us to sit in on a court session at 11:30. 8:55-Received a call to check on accident involving 4 hot rods. K U 9:07-Arrived at the scene of the crime. Arrested 4 offenders, Dangerous Dan Dupler, Reckless Rich Weiner, Bob Pickles Engel, and Phil Rocket'i Wright on offense No. 301-reckless operation. Patrolmen Zeke Zimmer and Johnny Vargo took them to the W01'kh0US6- 9:44-Stopped in for breakfast at Langleyig Luncheon. Shirley Sherrard took our orders for eggs- a-la-Hochuli, named after Head Chef Don Hochuli, who is assisted by his wife, ,the former Barbara Robinson. Across from us sat the famous pro-basketball player, Chico Howard, with his wife, Anne Marie, son Bevo, and teammates Stan Owens and Quincy Dunn. 10:28-On the street again we were nearly run down by Yummy Man Melvin Haws. He handed me a yummy with his apologies and I fgund myself staring into the face of Ann Chamberlain smiling from the wrapper. Mel explained that she had just been Ch0SeH MiSS Yummy of 1964. 10:31-We ambl-ed past Fritz Fi-ank'5 Feature House where Rita Harmon and Alan Helm were star- ring in the picture, Graduates of 1954,'i produced by VValter Meyer and directed by Janet Gwynn. The picture was adapted from a book written by Roberta Dworkin. 10:36-A block from the station we ran into Bill Keener who was painting a billboard. He was so excited to see us that he kicked over his bucket of paint manufactured by the Marlene Swisher Paint Co. 10:39-We passed Dixie's Super Mkt. owned by Gene Dixon and noticed Betty Coverdale, Laura Rosle, Donna Courtney and Shirley Smith punching cash registers made by the Jordan Bros., Clay and Me ton. 10:41-We decided to drop in at the corner drugstore to buy the morning paper which is edited by Jean Wilson and Virginia Murray. On page 7, we noticed an article on 'KPhascinating Physiquesf' by Marilyn Kauffman. There was also a feature article on Paul Schaible as an American Ambassador to the United Nations. As we were leaving we noticed Barb Rush making sodas for the shoe repair- man, Lee Abbitt, and the town undertakers, Alfred Steinwender and Ronnie Roach. 11:00-As we crossed the street Helen Longworth zoomed by in her J. Koterba Cadillac. Follow- ing her in a Teeters Taxi driven by Pat Toberan were Senator Don Brining and Congressman Dave Lef- ffer. No sooner had they gone by when the circus parade marched up the street led by the Mayor Jack' Kershaw and his wife, Pat fCaineD. Following close behind was the circus band with Drum Major Art Castle and Majorettes Lois Robson, Carol Hall, Donna Kirchner, and Pat Holland. We recognized some of our old classmates in the band-Pat Kelley, Jim Bethel, Jean Robbins, Mary Phyl Aleshire, Bill F rase, Joe L. Martin, Joe Schoppelrei, and Ed Burgner. The star of the show, Kay Shaulis, was riding on an elephant assisted by her trainer, Marvin Callif. Dressed as circus clowns were Ed Harbour and Carol Fe ure. 11:15-Checked in at the station, picked up some papers from my secretary Barbara Gould and left for court. 11:30-Arrived at the courthouse. Sgt. Paul Barnhill of the police force led us into the courtroom. The case we were to hear was Jim Boso vs. Bev Danison. It seems that Jim took off in a rocket to the moon and blew the roof off Bevis dream house. His Honor Steve Botley was presiding over the case. Bevis lawyer was Tom Cochran and Jimis lawyer was Don Grcic. Donna Canny swore in the witness, Nelson Kuehner, who built the roof of the house. The next three witnesses were the architects, Nancy Vest, Eleanor Brandenberger and Delores Brinkman, who estimated the damage. The only witness for the defense was Model Sally Miller who christened the rocket just before it took off. The 12 jurors then retired to decide the case-Head Juror, Gloria Wolf, hair designer, Jim Mil- bourne, farmer, Perry Fisher, radio repairman, Bob Carter, filling station owner, Elaine Nicholson, bat girl for the Cleveland Indians, Betsy Lee, manager of Stertzeris dry cleaners, Charlie Peake, famous track coach, Carol Jackson, housewife, Ed Balmer, radio and T.V. entertainer, Rena Fox, beauty operator, Hervey Williams, manager of Dorsey's Sporting Goods, and Janice Keseg, census taker. The defendant was found guilty and fined S5,000, but as he had not yet returned, the case was dismissed. 1:00-As we left the courtroom, Photographers Eddie Baker, Donna Thompson, Dave Hussey and Tom Trumbull were taking pictures. With them were reporters Paula Gatewood, Doris Grate and Janice Henkleman. Just then Scientists Don and Sanford Bloom passed by with Jeri Stewart and Roberta Black- burn who had just invented some new type of non-smear lipstick. 1:10-As we were entering the station Preacher Jim Chichka shouted a greeting to us. He told us that JoAnn Mayer's Construction Company was building him a new church and that Nancy Feil and Georgean Gray had each contributed 951,000 to the building fund. Co-chairrnen of the fund are Vicki Kindelberger and Marilyn O'Brien. 1:30-Entered my office and on my desk found the noon edition of the paper. Turned to the amusement page and found that Jack Allen's band was playing at Barb Davis' Dance Club, with Mari- anne Hammon and Pat Laycox as featured vocalists. At the bottom of the page I noticed that Becky Weisman and Phil Chamberlain had won academy awards for their parts in Dick F oreman's Broadway play. On the next page the article that caught my eye was about Tom Ogier who had received a medal of bravery for rescuing Dorothy Redfem from a fire. Also mentioned in the article were Head Firechief Ronnie Ward and F iremen Gary Biehl, Leroy Bauer and Bob Finta. 1:43-Laid down the paper, said good-bye to all my fellow workers and decided to call it a day. Appreciation of music turns our camera to the South High School Orchestra and the many events around South they help to make a success. Participation in Open House, Dramatics Department plays, Commencements, Baccalaureate Serv- ices, Class Day, Pre-Easter Service, Spring Concert, entries in the District and State Solo and Ensemble Contests keep the variety of music in a steady beat. The acquiring of new choir robes was the highlight for the choir members this year. In 1953 the choir participated in the All-City Choir for the C.O.T.A. Convention at the Coliseum. VVith the same group of mass choirs, they gave an open Christmas Choral Festival at Central High School. Each individual choir sang two solos, and for an impressive close, the mass choirs sang the Hallelujah Chorusf' Both of these performances were conducted by Mr. Keller, music director of Columbus schools. On March 14 the Music Directors Guild of which Miss R. Lippincott, director of our choir, is a mem- ber, presented a religious program at Capital University. Our choir took part in this program. Eugene Barban and Marianne Hammon, members of the choir, have received outstanding marks on performances outside of school. But first, wait! just one more look! says Emily Webb, who is portrayed by Marlene Swisher, in a dramatic moment of the spring play, Our Town, presented April 30. All the hard work that went into this play and the weariness tha-t followed were certainly known by the cast. All the work, however, was at least appreciated at the final curtain call. The applause of the audience was really all the thanks needed by the cast and supporting players to let them know just how much the play was liked by the parents, friends, and students of South High. STAGE CREW Cliff Gaver, Ronald Byrd, Adrian Hinson, and Tom Reeves are pictured painting the scenery for a school production. Hats off to the stage crew. They receive few rewards for per- forming their tasks so diligently. They do have, though, the per- sonal satisfaction of knowing that they helped to make each play, commencement, or pep rally a success. There is an honor bestowed upon the stage crew in the form of a key. Very few keys are given as a boy must give outstanding service to receive one. In the present crew there is only one who has been present- ed with such a key, Ronald Byrd, a IIA who regs in 312. SENIOR PLAY The delightful comedy, Papa Is All, by Patter- son Greene, was the January senior play, which was presented in the auditorium on Friday, No- vember 20. Jack Sagaster portrayed papa, Dick Byrd, Iack, his son, Susan McGory, Emma, Eileen Menzer, Mrs. Yoder, Joyce Buchanan, mamma, and Bob MacLeod, Brendle, in the play invoiving a Penn- sylvania Dutch family known as the Aukamps. All three acts of the play took place in the Au- kamps' farm. The fireworks really started when papa came home and found out that Emma was secretly seeing a surveyor behind papals back. Then when the family thinks that papa is all fdeadl, the humor really begins. The cast did an excellent job of interpreting the Pennsylvania Dutch customs and the dialect, which added much to the humor of the play. Ron Callanfler and Charlie Peake led the Blue and Gray attack. Bill Shinn also scored. Halfback Charlie Peake was a standout for South, although they were upset by Grandview 14 to 0. South lost to a powerful 'l'o1-edo Central 'Catholic Team 27 to 7. Sophomore Ron Wilkey got the only score. In the city league opener, Central's potential city league winners rolled over the Bulldogs, 28-6. Although the Bulldogs looked very impressive in the lirst half and lead by a score of 14 to 0, the West Cowboys came from behind to win 19-14, Again Ron Wilkey led the attack by -scoring two touchdowns. Aquinas Terriers were too much sa the Bulldogs went down in defeat 19 to 0. As Homecoming Queen Ann Chamberlain reigned the Bulldogs came through to upset the North Polar Bears 27-14. Charlie Peake starred as usual. South next traveled to the home of the city champs, Linden McKinley. The upset-minded Bulldogs put up the most vicious light of the year although they went down to defeat 13-7. Langley scored for South. CAGERS TAKE STATE RUNNER-UP CHAMPIONSHIP The South High Bulldogs finished runners-up in the State Basketball Tournament held in Cleveland, Ohio. This was the first time a Bulldog team goft to the State finals. The Bulldogs fell on the short end of a 66-56 score to powerful Hamilton Public in the final game. Alex Boo Ellis was the chief menace to the-Bulldogs as he rang the bell for fouling of the Bulldogs, as Frank Howard, 2:50 mark of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs gained the berth to the finals by downing game. For the finals, Hamilton was favored to win the ballgame 68-67. 27 markers. The defeat was really blamed on the excessive Stan Owens, and jumping jack Sam Pointer fouled out in succession after the Kent Roosevelt, 50-35, in a somewhat dull defensive type of although the Bulldogs upset the Big Blue earlier in the season After finishing second in the Cirty League, with North on top, South defeated Newark, Linden, and North, the latter being the best-played game of the year, to win the District Championship. Then the Bulldogs traveled to Toledo t. . . P lif. elf .X ix Coach Ceorge Pug S and defeated Defi ance and Toledo Macomber to win the regional toumament, setting the stage for the State finals in Cleveland. The Blue and Gray p-laced three boys on the various All-Tournament, All- State, and City Teams, Capt. Benny Wright, Sam Pointer, and Frank Howard. Sam Pointer was named the most outstanding player in the state tournament by the International News Service. South enjoyed many fine trips throughout their season, going to Middletown, Zanesville, Mansfield, Toledo, and Cleveland. ' For the season as a whole, the Bulldogs compiled 22 wins and 5 losses. The team all year long showed fine sportsmanship and good manners, plus good coaching on the floor. These could very well be the words of Coa-ch Pug Hood, as he will lose five of his top-notch basketball players via gradugtion. These fellows will be sorely missed when the 1954-55 season rolls aroun . Heading the list of seniors is Captain Benny Wright. Benny has been a member of the varsity for three years, and has played on two championship teams during that time. Next is George Langley, who didn't see too much action during the regular season but came along brilliantly in some -of the anxious mom.ents of the Regionals and State Tournament play. Then there's Stanley Owens, the big boy who really hit his stride in the finals of the District and helped the Bulldogs down the home stretch, in quest of the State Title. Quincy Duce Dunn, who didn,t play last year because of an ankle injury, became very strong and proved to be a vital cog in the Bulldog machine. Last, bu-t certainly not the least, is big Frank Chico,' Howard. Chico and Clarence Pointer were the 1-2 scoring punch of the Bulldogs. Big Chic holds the all-time District Class A scoring record. Frank has also been an all-city performer for the past two seasons. No one can get through without permission. Not even a police- man, unless he has a search warrant. Here, in America, your right to freedom from search without warrant is guaranteed by The Constitution itself. How different behind the iron curtain! There, the people have no such protection. And even a solid oak door, strong enough to guard a fortress, can't keep out the secret police. When they want in they get in, eventually, even if they have to use a battering ram. But the flimsiest screen door in America can keep out the police unless they have a search warrant. Because we Americans take our rights for granted, it's hard to believe that there are pinkos and fellow-travelers amongst us who want to take away our freedom from search without warrant. It's just part of their plan to steal all our rights, like the right to own property, the right to work wherever we please, the right to vote secretly and all the rest. The best way to protect a right is to use it. So if you ever hear anyone come out in favor of permitting arbitrary search and seizure on some pretext or other, set him straight! Remind him that freedom from search without warrant is a right guaranteed every American by The Constitution. Remember, thcy're your rights, so treat them right!
