PIGSKIN REVIEW BY PAUL LLOYD With Coach Chuck Gilbertis fine instruction, our Bulldogs had one of their better seasons. They finished third in the league with 4 wins and 2 losses. Their season record was 6 wins and 3 losses. After leading 42 of the 48 minutes, South lost their annual opening game to Arlington, 19-13. They opened their home season by routing Grandview, 42-26. Charlie Peake and Bon Cal- lander led the attack. West defeated the Bulldogs, 38-6, in the first league game. Charlie Peake went 80 yards for Southis only score. They defeated Aquinas, 27-6, with Co-Captain Don Wirtz going 90 yards to pay-dirt. Earl Joiner, Charlie Peake, and Ron Callander also scored. The following Friday the Bulldogs put on a fine show for Homecoming Queen Sherrie Phillips, winning 26-14 over Linden. Ron Cal- lander had a 102-yard run, one of the sea-son's best. For the first time in 15 years, South defeated North. Co-Captains Dick Papai and Don Wirtz led the attack which saw the Bulldogs on top, 31-18. Eastls speed was too much as we lost to the Tigers, 20-6. Dick Papai scored South's only T.D. Next South drew a bye in the seven-team league, and went to Marion. Led by Elbert Du- benion, they Won 19-14. A Win over Central, 39-20, cinched third place for the Bulldogs. Elbert Dubenion again led the score parade. Bob Grate, Franke Reeves, Bon Callander, Elbert Dubenion, Dick Papai, Don Wirtz, Bill Shinn, Dick Morbitzer, and Larry Evans gained All-City berths for South. The reserves also had a good season, finishing with 4 wins and 2 losses. Page Fifty
