South Dear GCHARLIEU: It surely has been a long time since '4l953',-twenty years. We were reminiscing about the old gang and thought of writing to you. Many exciting things have happened to us since we last saw you. VVe went to New York on our vacation and had a really eventful time. We took a plane from the HOLBROOK AIRLINES and were treated with great luxuriousness by the hostesses, DOROTHY DAVIS, ODESSA MILNER, and PHYLLIS TROUT. We ran into a little bad weather, but the pilots BOB SCHWAB and JOEL ROBISON really knew what they were do- ing and we arrived safely. The cab driver, GENE BECHTEL, was very kind and took us to a beautiful and widely advertised hotel owned by ADAM HIGH, HARRY DORR, and BILL BACK. They were very glad to accommodate us free of charge, which was greatly appreciated. They informed us of a good place to eat, SINACOLA,S SPAGHETTI HOUSE, owned by LORETTA SINACOLA. We were shown to our table by the -head waiter DONN WATSON and served very courteou-sly by the waitresses, EVELYN FOX, BETTY HEFFLEY, and BARBARA THALL. The cigarette girl, PATTI KIRBY, was also very kind. We decided to see a stage show that night, so we went to see the NCOHEN FOLLIES' backed by ED COHEN. SHIRLEY VEST, PAT WILLIAMS, BETTY TROTT, SHEILA MEL- MAN, and LUCILLE MEINEN really made a terrific chorus line. It is no wonder the show was such a success with RAY NVOOD directing it. As we were leaving the theater, we saw many prosperous business men and accomplished artists. WVe saw MERRILL CALVIN, presi- dent of CALVIN'S LINGERIE INC.,', the two very famous dentists for making false teeth, LARRY BORROR and CHUCK RUNDIO, and WILMA EVANS, the first woman president of the i'Violinist Union. The next day we went -shopping and stopped in an exclusive dress shop owned by LENORE COOPER. DOROTHY VANCE, BETTY REO, and BONNIE WENTZEL were models there. We were surprised to see CYRIL ZISENWINE, now a P.O.D. teacher, also there shopping. She told us that KENNY LININGER was sports editor of the local paper and doing very well. Speaking of sports, I suppose you know that DON WIRTZ is playing professional football for the Cleveland Browns. By the end of the day we were really tired, so we went back to the hotel. The hotel operator. ROSIE COOK, was very kind and took all our messages so we would not be bothered. Relaxing to the soothing music of the Rhythm Boysv -- composed of GEORGE DEMME, KEITH BOTLEY, HAROLD TRAGER, and OLLIE CORDLE - we ended that day with slumber. We spent the next day -sightseeing. While walking around, we noticed HELEN PAPPAS finally got her name in lights. We also saw a poster announcing IIM POTTS as the winner of the midget auto races. We are sure his manager, IO ANN SHARTZ, had a lot to do with it. This was the last day of our vacation, but we really felt good seeing how successful all of our former classmates have become. Looking forward to seeing you at our twenty-fifth class reunion. Your friends, DIANE WARNER MIRIAM SCHOTTENSTEIN Page Eighteen Klise S. King June Class Advisers and ffieers Miss Lydia Meyer Verne C. Inst looking at the cover brought back so many memories of my high school days, I couldnit help glancing through it. The first page I turned to was that of the class oflicers. Tom Passen, class president, is a noted basketball coach in the East with Tom Iones, his manager. Along the sports line, Kenny Clark and Sherrie Phillips are the stars in Swishers Swim Review, while Judy Arthur is married to an Admiral. As I flipped the pages I recalled the faces of classmates who had slipped to the back of my mind. My good friend, Ioan Ball, is sending her two little girls to Geri Adams, Training School for Tiny Tots. Two of the teachers there are Betty Adkins and Faith Badurina. Dave Backulich is working hard in the school,s music department. I heard on the T. V. noon news program about the big usyndicatev bank robbery. Devoin Lahey, president of -the bank, has appealed to the F. B. I. and they are putting three of their top men on the job- Bill Brown, Bob Grate, and Richard Larger. Oh, herels Betty Kritzeris picture. That reminds me of the long chat I had with her the other day. She and Doris Windmiller just completed a round-the-world trip. While they were in Iran, the Decaminada-Luzader Oil Befineries were having a dispute so joe and jim sent for lack Balogh and Bonnie Benjamin, now lawyers. They came via the Kaser Air Lines in order to settle the mat- ter. Betty was also telling me that while they were in Paris, Beverly Biggs, Connie Gautz, and Nancy Emish, Inc. created a new Parisian dress style. Paul Lloyd and Iulia Davis make the hats for all the blue-blood of Europe. Doris and Betty made the return trip on the U.S.S. Rauch, named in the honor of Senator Eric Rauch, and jim Ackerson was the ship's captain. Since so many of my old classmates have moved to New York, I subscribe to the New York Times, co-edited by Emmie Huntsberger and Carol Bowen. A feature story was of Margaret Chris- mer donating 385,000 in order to complete the church where Anthony Cocco will be priest. The plans for the church were drawn up by Kay Kramer and Chuck Slagle. Appearing in the famous Kochensparger Copacabana are Mary Byrd and her Piano Blues, the famous Garrigan, Glick, Nofer, and Smerles quartette, Neil Swissman and his dummy, and providing the musical background is jim Kearns, Dance Band. Some of the members of his band are Gary Carroll, john Gersper, Don Hooper, Luther Ranft, and Gene Stofer. On the front page of yesterdayls Times was a picture of Bob Dolby and Don Gwynn, a-tomic energy commissioners, congratulating Bob Kates for a new discovery. Seems he found a way to make chicken wings three times as big as they are, with atomic rays. Ella Bullock, Margie Conkle, Phyllis Coon, and Beva Greyf are putting on exhibition bridge games in connection with the Tidwell Bridge Club. Working with the Tom Burton modeling agency in New York are Marilyn Buckholz, Susan Greenyield, jean Johnston, Carleen Sutorius, Elizabeth Stein, Dolores Wasil, and Nancy Wes- ney. That terriiic team- Pat Busheels Bit-A-Basketeers has appealed to the john H arkless, Henry Pell, Gene Martin Athletic Sporting Co. -to make them some high-heeled tennis shoes. Pat and the other starting four, Nina Shrieves, Shirley Smith, Carol Forst, and Ioyce Bradford, are having trouble reaching the basket. Our own fair city isnlt doing so bad in claiming the talents of my classmates. Kenny Hill is mayor with Elaine Duros as his private secretary. Larry Evans is president of the Evans Fair Deal Insurance Co., and his sister, Vellaire, just had her second set of twins. Carol Shafer and Ioe Brown are currently starring in a musical comedy at the Hartman. Their supporting cast includes Lucretia Harper, Eileen Kroyjf, IoAnn VV eisenberger, Bert Peters, jerry Fee, Louie Kempf, and Bob Smith. Iack Kennedy owns the Hartman, and Harold Beamenderfer, Sam Miklos, john Sorenson and Norman Weber manage the stage crew. IoAnn McCalla was here not very long ago in a special ballet show. Nancy McCune, Marcia Mays, Shirley Scherie, Shyla Kettler, and Donna Hamler assist her in the dancing routine. Dick Papai and Dick Morbitzer have organized the Buckeye Pro Football Team. Seen perform- ing with them are Dave Shaw, VVillis Kredel, Paul Godorhazy, and Bill Dodson. Larry Schenk has turned pro-golfer and Charles Cacciatore, Harold Hill, and Tom Stedman now work out with the Co- lumbus Red Birds. On my shopping trips downtown I see such girls as Joyce Hall, Viola Hipolite, Naomi Hook, Hazel Long, Ruth Knoepfel, and Barbara Roberts working in the stores. Connie Bitcha- son is the dress buyer in the Yahraus-Mouser Clothing Store. Shirley Morgan is more commonly known as Dr. Morgan, Pediatrician. Her two very capable nursing assistants are Barbara Stroh and Shirley Tustin. Marcie Andrews is the leadng scorer in the City Womenls Basketball League. Marcie plays in Southis gym every week and she told me Dick Wolff and Chuck Lowery are night janitors. I went back to a South game not so very long ago and there were Marilyn Coil and Norma Pearson backing the team the same as ten years ago. Ioann Kidd and Bosie Styers work in the Eddie Dunfee, Mary Kramer, and Phyllis Strait Bakery Corp. Their bread is extra -delicious because of a new dough- making process invented by jim Spohn and Manfred Maier. I found out about this process through Don Batcliff, my bread-man. Out Buckeye Lake way Platt Kennedy is racing his boats. while his wife, Ebbie, keeps account of the prize money and trophies. PIGSKIN REVIEW BY PAUL LLOYD With Coach Chuck Gilbertis fine instruction, our Bulldogs had one of their better seasons. They finished third in the league with 4 wins and 2 losses. Their season record was 6 wins and 3 losses. After leading 42 of the 48 minutes, South lost their annual opening game to Arlington, 19-13. They opened their home season by routing Grandview, 42-26. Charlie Peake and Bon Cal- lander led the attack. West defeated the Bulldogs, 38-6, in the first league game. Charlie Peake went 80 yards for Southis only score. They defeated Aquinas, 27-6, with Co-Captain Don Wirtz going 90 yards to pay-dirt. Earl Joiner, Charlie Peake, and Ron Callander also scored. The following Friday the Bulldogs put on a fine show for Homecoming Queen Sherrie Phillips, winning 26-14 over Linden. Ron Cal- lander had a 102-yard run, one of the sea-son's best. For the first time in 15 years, South defeated North. Co-Captains Dick Papai and Don Wirtz led the attack which saw the Bulldogs on top, 31-18. Eastls speed was too much as we lost to the Tigers, 20-6. Dick Papai scored South's only T.D. Next South drew a bye in the seven-team league, and went to Marion. Led by Elbert Du- benion, they Won 19-14. A Win over Central, 39-20, cinched third place for the Bulldogs. Elbert Dubenion again led the score parade. Bob Grate, Franke Reeves, Bon Callander, Elbert Dubenion, Dick Papai, Don Wirtz, Bill Shinn, Dick Morbitzer, and Larry Evans gained All-City berths for South. CAGE REVIEW BY DICK PAPAI Our cagers won the City League title with North causing the only real trouhle. The Bulldogs defeated North at the coliseum on Henry Pell's last second foul shot 48-47, and on the home court, 60-57. Their only league loss was a forfeit to Central. South lost to Middletown, State Champs, 59-92, and Hamilton, a strong south-west powerhouse, 54-62. Tournament play started with the Bulldogs defeating St. Charles 60-40. South didn't bother with the law of averages, heating East 47-89, and North 68-48, both for the third straight time. After trailing Newark 17-ll, at the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs pulled to a 25-24 lead at -half. Pell and Howard each had 8 points. South pulled ahead 85-82 and then Pell, Owens, and Howard fouled out. Newark then began to close the gap and finally defeated South, 46-40, for the district title. Frank Howard, Sam Pointer, and Henry Pell were All-City selections. Howard, Pointer, Pell, and Benny Wright made All-Tournament. Sam Pointer also gained All-State honorable mention. Graduating seniors are Tom Passen, Henry Pell, john Harkless, and lim Potts who graduated at mid-year. SEASON'S RECORD South .................... Zanesville South .................... Yet these papers are pub- lished in languages that look very strange to most of us. They are just a few of the many hundreds of foreign lan- guage newspapers published in America. The publishers of these papers have the same freedom to express their views and support their interests that English language newspaper publishers have. The right to publish what we please, and in any language we please, is one of the freedoms guaranteed to us by our Constitution along with the right to secret ballot, freedom of worship and many others. In some countries these rights are being wiped out because they stand in the way of a totalitarian state. There, free-speaking newspapers have been replaced by state- owned propaganda machines. Religion has been suppressed. History re-written to glorify the state. There are those in this country who would like to re-write our Constitution so that it would wipe out our rights, too. The only way we can prevent this is to stand up for our rights whenever we see them threatened. Remember, they're your rights, so treat them right! newspapers! DO YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS?
