The Critic Staff has drawn up a constitution this year and has become a full fledged Club, boasting of 39 active members. Each spring the Club awards Critic pins to those members who have completed twenty-five assignments. Something new was tried this year, which we definitely liked a lot. A special seven page edi- tion of the Critic came out on January Sth, con- taining all news that had accumulated over Christmas vacation. On Commencement night, to the best all around student of the year, a very special award is given, The Critic Cup. Besides the delicious dinner which the Juniors and Seniors enjoyed immensely, the banquet given in the girls gym, consisted of a very enter- taining program. Place cards in the form of musical notes and menus made to resemble treble clefs carried out the melody theme. Soon after the banquet the orchestra tuned up and the couples arrived at the magically trans- formed boys gym to spend the rest of the eve- ning enjoying themselves gliding across the floor to the magic melody of the orchestra. One of the first things we did was have our mothers over for an evening and decided upon a chapter mother. During October, forty of us went to Western Michigan College to attend the sectional meeting of F.H.A. The F.H.A. is divided into two groups, the junior, or 9th grade group, and the senior group -the total membership equaling approximately eighty. At the beginning of the year we sold Howers for Disabled Veterans. Other activities included: a Bake Sale, Hayride, The Irish Jig, and State Convention which was held at Michi- gan State College on March 22-23. Next year we are looking forward to a con- tinuation of these activities plus many more. Members of the F.H.A. are: Jean Atwater, Mary Bishop, Christy Bergstrom, Betty Bolles, Alida Bower, Marilyn Brinks, Barbara Burrows, Frances Burrows, Pat Burrows, Jane Collins, Jo Anne Covey, Rosemary Filbrandt, Pauline Free- man, Juanita Freeman, Donna Hull, Dorothy Janosky, Grace Janosky, Janice Kiry, Helen Krzeman, Joanne Lieske, Elsie Markey, Maureen McCafferty, Rose Musser, Margie Norman, Bar- bara Ridley, Patsy Roe, Lorraine Russell, Beverly St. John, Joanne Strobel, Marcella Tomsa, Beverly Vanderboegh, Kathy Vincent, Beverly Waller, Dorothy Janco, Marilyn Moragne, Sally Somerlad, Gladys Faux, Bobbie Jean Fuller, and Helen Burrows. jufure garment o!.f4merica Hitting their familiar winning stride, as in previous years, our F.F.A. boys had a strong year filled to the brim with many fine achieve- ments. Worthwhile farming experiences and chapter activities led the parade of accomplish- ments, with top flight educational trips and train- ing for leadership in the agricultural field fol- lowing close behind. Not to mention the finest of teams which took first awards in both fruits and vegetables to cap another successful year. During the summer vacation our Future Farm- ers are busy on their own farm projects covering a wide range of enterprises, but including vege- tables for the National Junior Vegetable Growers Association Scholarship Awards. Some of the boys were able to take the trip to the Ferry- Morse vegetable and flower test plots at Rochest- er. As the summer waned Mr. Cowles and several boys were very busy preparing for the State Fair at Detroit. They added another blue ribbon to make it three blues and one red in the four con- tests since World War ll. As the fall months flowed along, our F.F.A. boys are busy harvesting, completing their re- cords, and preparing to meet the best in the State in the fields of fruits and vegetables. .lack Harbin represented South Haven at the National F.F.A. Convention at Kansas City, while David Dilley, Maurice Olson, and Roy Markey traveled to New Orleans for the National Convention of the N..l.V.G.A. In December our chapter was represented at the State Horticultural Society Meetings by two apple judging teams. Norman Baker, Jerry Davis, and Don Wark were the reserves, while J. D. Scott, Harold Ingraham. and Paul Baker brought back another plaque fNo. 1-ll and Paul Baker was individual State Champion. Over Christmas vacation our boys studied for the three teams to enter the District F.F.A. con- tests. These teams are Jerry Davis-F.F.A. Public Speaker, Robert Rutten and Art Wissman --F.F.A. Demonstrators, and the Parliamentary Law team members: M. Olson, J. D. Scott, D. Dilley, D. Driver, H. Ingraham, Paul and Nor- man Baker, Roy Markey, and Jack Harbin. After this all boys have to complete their New Summer Project Plans. They are busy starting plants, buying and selling seeds, and raising hybrid broilers as demonstration group projects. On February 14, our F.F.A. boys held their annual banquet for their parents, and Mr. Cowles, our advisor awarded Chapter Farmer Pins, Gold Letters H000 pointsl and White Letters 12500 pointsl to those who had earned them.
