However, the Rams nailed down victories in their first live games, winning over Paw Paw, Niles, Buchanan, Allegan, and Three Rivers. The last three games were close, hard fought struggles which could easily have gone either way and the Golden Rams unluckily were on the short end of the score. The Rams also gave Buchanan, the Conference champs, their only defeat. The 5 won, 3 lost record can be counted as successful, and in spirit and deter- mination the 47 squad was never excelled. Charley Roland, Don Brinks, Tom Baer and Jack Broe won places on the all-conference team, Tom also received honorable mention on all-state listing. Seniors lost to the squad are: Captain Jack Nixon, Don Brinks, Jack Broe, Alvin Gumpert, Jack Gillett, Howard Filbrandt, Alfred Dubuisson, Don Allen, Leon Brush, Ernest Dreksler, Bill Jenkins, Jim Roberts, and Jack Niles. Also lost will be one of the best managers South Haven ever had-Cliff Harrington. Lettermen returning are Tom Baer, Bob Ditch, Jim Henry, Charley Sanders, and Art Pratt. Other squad members returning who will make promising material for next year's team are: Dale Brown, Bob Rosenson, Bill Ryan, Bob McDowell, and Bob Van Wynen. Managers were: Cliff Harrington, Zeno Woody, Al Plaehn, Art Boerma, and Tony Virgo. Although the squad was the smallest in the conference, this year's Ram basketball team displayed such fighting spirit and determination that it became the most feared team in the League. Highlight of the season was the humiliating defeat the Rams dealt the undefeated St. Joseph team, 48 to 39. This win alone made the season a success as the team went on to place second in the conference and assimilated an over-all season,s record of 11 won, and 4 lost. Completely outplaying a heavily favored Holland-Christian team in the District Tournament, South Haven gave the towering Dutchmen a lesson in fast-break basketball as they won a whirlwind 46 to 44 victory, taking home the District Championship. Lost to next year's squad by graduation are Captain Howie Filbrandt, sparkplug and leading scorer of the team, stellar guard Don Brinks, jack Nixon, and Neil Van Dis. Prospects for next year are good with letter winners Tom Baer, Bill Fagurlund, Bob Ditch, Art Pratt, and jim Henry coming back. Others returning are Dale Brown, Bob McDowell, and Bruce Thornton. The second team basketball squad, made up almost entirely of freshmen, showed great promise toward the end of the season and prospects for next year are encouraging. In posting a final record of 5 won and 10 lost, the boys gained a great deal of needed experience. Balanced scoring and team height are two assets exhibited by the squad that will prove valuable in the future. The outstanding 24-23 upset victory over St. joe was .1 spectacular victory.
