E r e : L ' N ' , l , , ' , MR BAER Back 1n 1927 seventeen years ago a man came to South Haven Hxgh School to tach physlcal educatlon coach basketball and baseball and assume the great re spons1b1l1ty of dlrector of athlet1cs HIS frrst basketball team was not hlghly successful w1nn1ng only 2 games fn a l6 game schedule The second year restored fa1th m our team when we became county champlons and also added 2 trophres to our collectlon Due to h1s mfluence the South Haven teams started on the up grade The tollowmg year 1929 Mr Baer coached h1s f1rst football team Th1S team the captam who by the way was Nell GOOdf1Ch lost only 2 games out of a 9 game schedule In 1932 Coach Baers pos1t1on as basketball coach was taken over by Otto Greln teams Durmg h1s years 1n th1s school he has won the respect and admlratlon of all tudents and faculty Hts htgh standards of sportsrnansh1p have been passed on to all who have known h1m B tween h1s gym classes and coachmg dutles he found t1me to teach a hyg1ene Cla s flrst a1d and to take charge of rntramural basketball for those boys ln Semcr Hrgh who lrked basketball but werent on the Vars1ty teams He left our h1gh school 1n February of th1s year to take over another pos1t1on n th1s communrty On February 18 Just before he left a short assembly was held ln h1s honor and he was presented wlth a sterlmg s1lver pen and pencrl by the boys of the Semor class We do mlss you Mr Baer but we smcerely wlsh you all the happmess and suc cess rn the world E I 2 ' ' , , - Since that time he has continued his good work as coach of football and baseball e ' ' ' , ' ' Q . . . . . VARSITY BASKETBALL 43 44 Coach Tom Slaughters basketeers of 43 44 were the smallest South Haven team tn many years They made up for thls hand1cap wtth plenty of sp1r1t and scrap thus end1ng up w1th a fa1r season of seven v1ctor1es and seven defeats Although a low scortng team the Rams were able to spllt even 1n the1r schedule because of f1ne defenslve play The zone defense kept the1r opponents guessrng A brtef summary of the 43 44 season 1S as follows The Rams played the1r flrst game on the1r home floor and won an easy vlctory over Otsego The follow1ng week the boys traveled to Kalamazoo and were all but swallowed up on the btg floor thus falhng easy prey to a strong State Hlgh ftve Once agaln on the1r home court the boys battled a Nlles team to the f1n1sh only to lose 1n tie last three m1nutes of play Agam taktng to tne road the boys won a close game from a scrappy Allegan team Commg ba k after a rest durlng vacat1on the Rams led the St loe frve untll the fmal two rmnutes m whtch V1ClOfY was snatched from the1r grasp Once more traveltng out of town the Rams won a close one from Dowagtac Coach Slaughter was not able to make the tr1p because of lllness Th1s vrctory how ever gave htm new l1fe and he returned to practtce sessrons the followlng week The Rams facmg Allegan for the second trme agaln defeated them easrly At Three RIVGIS the Rams won a hard fought rough and rugged game for the1r thrrd stra1ght wm Thxs wtnntng streak of the Rams whlch was 1ts longest of the season was soon stopped however for the followtng week State Hlgh agatn turned back the Rams thts trme at South Haven Thls game was the start of a slump for the Rams for the next week they played one of the1r worst games of the season loslng to Nlles at Nlles At Otsego the followmg week the Rams looked as rf they were gotng to pull out of the1r nose dlve when they walked over Otsego to an easy vlctory I 1 - - 1 1 . SBHUULS AT WAR COMMITTEE Taking their cue directly from state and national pamphlets at the beginning of the year, this group became the Schools At War Committee-striking out the title, Defense committee, as outmoded. They sponsored a successful and patriotic poster dance, the theme centered around the colorful and varied material sent to them by the national War Stamp Com mlttees Pearl Harbor Day Valentines Day and Washingtons birthday found stamp cor sages for sale in the school and at basketball games A Hit Parade program Ianuary 14 received the enthusiastic co operation of both faculty and students The dance band gave out w1th the music and each vote had to be backed with a War Stamp purchase By far the greatest accomplishment of this committee however was the attainment of the 90!
