OTTO GREIN he Teachers' Club began its activities for the year with a beach party welcoming the new teachers. With a Lake Michigaifsunset for the background, good food and sociability combined to provide a jolly reception for the ten new members: Louise Coleman, Caroline Linnell, Caryl Jennings, Jessie Schrier, Beulah Buchanan: Grades, Evelyn Johnson, Linda Crosby, Elizabeth Hathaway, Virginia Grant: Junior Highg and Marion Hamilton: Physical Education. In September a most enjoyable week-end was spent at Pine Lake, where ithe teachers were the guests of the Kellogg Foundation. The Kiwanis-Faculty dinner and the Thanksgiving Banquet have become' an- nual features of the Club's social program in the fall. At the Thanksgiving dinner the Board of Education was entertained. Another outstanding event was a talk by llflr. Mohr on his trip to Yucatan last summer. It not only strengthened the desire for travel but also' gave a keen appre- ciation of the early civilization of Mexico. Once again th'e Club entered the field of dramatics. On November 22, a well chosen cast under the direction of lN'Iiss Carol Meyer presented Skidding , a three act comedy by Aurania Rouveral. It was enthusiastically received. BOARD OF EDUCATION .- During the past yearsi of high school, the class of '36 has more and more realized the efforts and accomplishments of the Board of Education to make high school life more advanced and enjoyable. Although this class as a whole will not benefit by the new vocational building now under construction, we appreciate the outcome of such a favorable enterprise. OFFICERS Prfsidrn! . . J. E. Yet, can leaving erase every beautiful trace Of that past which seems perfectly grand? From Sophomores so tlighty to juniors so mighty VVe played with each desperate role, And then the next stage turned the mightiest page- As Seniors we sighted the goal. But now that aged Time in his passage sublime Has ordered that we must depart, Although we are glad, still the parting is sad, And a pang of regret claims each heart. For we cherish as dear all the memories here, Which we fondle like wonderful toys. As these gems we recall, how we cling to them all, Our struggles, our heartaches, our joys! ANNUAL STAFF at the first senior meeting, with a great show of spirit and pep, the seniors voted unanimously in favor of a year hook. After taking the money side of the question seriously into mind, the class voted in favor of class dues. This was a bold move Considering the fact that for many years dues had been thought to be a menace, owing to the presence of a depression in the country. VVith dues as a source of income it did not make conditions necessary for the staff to rely wholly upon the proceeds of the Senior Play, benefits, and candy sales to cover the costs of making an annual. Among the lettermen who figured prominently in the gathering of points were Captain Slentz in the pole-vault and hurdles and Captain-elect Gumpert showing up well in the mile run. The first meet of the season was the annual interclass meet. The seniors took nrst place with SOM points, followed by the juniors with -ll and the sophomores with 2951. Harold Slentz was high point man, giving him the honor of having his name engraved on the interclass cup. VVith most of his men new to the cinder path, Coach Jillson's squad surrendered the Van Buren County Championship to Paw Paw, last year's State Champions in Class C, with a scorce of 59M to 4-lk, the first win the Redskins have scored over a South Haven track team in five years. The meet was featured by the brilliant in- dividual performance of Alan Smith of Paw Paw. Slentz led the locals with H- points. South Haven lost its second track meet of the season to St. joseph in a closely contested meet by a score of 55M to 4856. In the quarter-mile, four Purple and 'Gold runners crossed the tape before a single St. Joe runner arrived. Niles veteran trackmen were too much for the newly organized Purple and Gold track team and completely submerged the locals 86M to l7f4. VVith the well-oiled, experienced team, the Nilesmen swept. every first place except the high-jump in which three Nilesmen tied with Slentz. CROSS COUNTRY I935 he squad started the season with only two of its members having any cross country running experience. This sport is gaining popularity each year since it has been revived. The Hrst meet of the season was with Niles. All the members of South Haven team placed very close together. But this was offset because Grimes and Metzger of Niles, took home the first two places. The score was 34 to 21. Bud Gumpert returned to his old form in the interclass race and took first. This made him eligible to have his name engraved on the silver cup presented by Arthur hloore. Second and Third places were taken by lvlerton jones, and Ells- worth Corrie. The team placed second in the Regional hleet with a score that showed Niles that South Haven was still in the running. This made the team eligible for the State meet held at Ypsilanti in which the team did not compete due to expense. The final lap of the season was an Invitational Race sponsored by Kalamazoo Central. Coach -Iillson's harriers furnished six men. Gumpert placed fourth, Mertoii Jones eighth, and E. Corrie eleventh. South Haven as a team won first place, beat- ing Kalamazoo, the Class A Champions, and Niles, the Class B Champions. Letter Certificates were awarded to lierton jones, Captain, IQ. Smith, D. VVenban, Sankofski, Wepfer, A. Overhiser, 1N'IcCarty, and Rumiez as the returning lettermen. Coach Baer called the first practice session early in April but because of the bad weather only a few practice periods were- per- mitted which largely resulted in the defeat of the Purple and 'Gold nine in the first practice game with Gobles. VVithout getting a hit Gobles was able to walk around the bases for five runs to two for South Haven. Coach Baer's nine turned in its first victory of the season by completely routing Covert 18 to 3 in a slugging feat in which Overhiser and Smith both hit circuit blows. Gobles was next on the schedule. Lefty Smith pitched for the locals striking out nine batters and allowing only three hits. The Purple and Gold scored 17 runs on 12 hits to shut out the Gobles nine, 17 to 0. Dowagiac, away from here, was our next opponent. South Haven lost by the heart-breaking score of Z to l to the Chieftains who had returned to baseball once again. This contest was well played by both teams. The next jump was to Lawton. Lawton threatened to score in the final period but South Haven managed to come on top with a 4 to 3 score. Captain Wenbaii was the hero of the game by scoring 3 out of the 4 runs. The tide was turned slightly against us because of our lack of practice during the week and the Purple and Gold nine was barely able to eke out a 5 to 4 victory over Hartford. SHHS 42 BASEBALL qconnn South Haven won their third straight conference victory by defeating Bangor 3 to 1. Captain Allan Wenban allowed the strong opponent nine only 5 hits. Decatur was next in line and in a nip and tuck battle South Haven received its first conference defeat when Decatur put across a run in the final inning to win 8 to 7. The last game of the season saw the Purple and Gold nine playing their sloppiest ball of the season and booted away all hopes of a county championship when they lost to Bloomingdale 5 to 1. In the county championship there was a three way tie between Bloomingdale, Decatur and Bangor, with Bangor coming out as the victor in the playoff. Captain Wetiban who played at third base and also pitcher has been signed to a contract with the Chicago White Sox. This year South Haven should have a winning team, for it will have seven veterans headed by Co-Captains D. VVenban and Rumiez. FOOTBALL I935 nine veterans answered the call of Coach Davis Baer and with them a number of sterling recruits from the second team squad of the previous year. A record of five victories, one tie, and three defeats for the l935 season was established. A heavy lille and a fast, shifty backfield gave Coach Baer a scoring machine and an effective defense. A short slump opened the season, but the Purple and 'Gold eleven rallied in time to get into the thick of the Big Five Conference race and placed second when nosed out by St. Joseph. The season was opened with the first night game in the history of South Haven high school at St. joseph. The Bears overwhelm-ed the Purple and Gold 19 to O. The following Saturday, South Haven played llluskegon Heights, undefeated for the past two years, and were crushed 40 to 0. The Purple and Gold eleven took its first encounter of the Big Five Conference by defeating Niles, 7 to O. Lapsing back into their poor early season form South Haven lacked the vitality and the football spirit to defeat Buchanan and remained content with a 7 to 7 tie. South Haven met the Paw Paw Redskins on Ratcliffe field and scalped the braves 17 to 7. Purple and 'Gold eleven won the second game of its Big Five Conference season when they trounced Three Rivers 18 to 7. South Haven took a hard fought game from Coloma by defeating them 9 to 0. SHHS 44 FOCTBALL qconnn St. joseph's yellow-clad tornado-of-strength swooped down on Ratcliffe field to find a fighting Purple and Gold resistance but, proving that the better team wins, the Bears went back home with the Big Five Conference Title and a score of 13 to 0 in their favor. The Purple and Gold defeated the Dowagiac Indians l-if to O to give us the run- ner up honor of the conference and the right to rank next to St. Joseph. Coach Davis Baer awarded varsity letters to the following: Captain jess Meeker-iianied all-conference center--has been regular varsity center for the past three years. The distinguishing characteristic of his plays was his ability to knife through and get his man while on defense. Captain-elect Charles Tait, one of the smallest players of the squad was perfectly at home on the football team. He played regular quarterback for two seasons and will make an excellent leader for next year. Bud Moran, playing his second year of football was changed from tackle to end, Where he certainly made good because of his excellent playing in breaking up interference. He has another year to give for the Purple and Gold. Neil Barner, who played at end for two seasons showed at all times the ability to fight as a linesman. He graduates in June. 'Jerome Gerber, a great defensive tackle, completed on the Conference All-Stars first team. He proved a stumbling block to the opposing plays through the line. He also will be lost in June. Dan Chaddock was picked as the other tackle on the Conference first team. Playing his third year at tackle, he certainly made a name for himself. Carl Stuenkel, another two year veteran and guard, constantly broke up oppo- sition plays and dropped many an opponent behind the line of scrimmage for losses. He also graduates. Frank Crnkovich, earned the position of right guard on Conference All-Stars de- spite only one year's varsity experience. Frank played a good defensive game. Shirley McCarty, guard, because of a leg injury, was not able to take part in all the games, but when he played he proved his ability as an outstanding man on either offense or defense. Abe Ashen, a plunging fullback who played a great game at either fullback or end, was strong not only on defense but on offense as well. Erdmann Haase, playing his first year at right half where his ability in passing was outstanding, filled up the position as a halfback should. l936 45 FOOTBALL lCon+'dl Bob lylyers, fullback, proved to be reliable at all times. His running and steady plunging made him very valuable to the squad. He will return. lVIarion Schlaack, the Casco Flash , taken from the second team, showed his ability in open Held running and around end and gained a name for himself. He has one more year and ought to prove valuable next year. VVillis Hoag, a blocking half, although handicapped during the latter part of the season with a knee injury, gave a good account of himself while he was in action. lwax Edwards, a tackle or guard, whenever called upon proved his worth as a strong defensive and offensive player. He filled in well with the other players and was of great aid to the team. Arthur Clarke, Jack of All Trades , who could fill in at any position and was always in there giving his best for the Purple and Gold, will graduate in June. Dominic Tragna, the plunging little Sophomore fullback, made good by his abil- ity to pick holes in the line and by his constant hard-driving. John Holubar, a blocking half, proved to be strong playing on defense and offense. He will return next year. Marshall Bodfish the hard workin mana er of the team, should be given a lot D , ' g g W ' of the credit for the success of this yearys team. Sam Stamler was the assistant man- ager. South Haven lost a hard-fought contest to the Big Five Conference leaders St. Joe, by a score of 23 to ll. I936 47 BASKETBALL qcQn+'a3 J, Lead by the deadly shooting of Moran, who collected 15 points, the South Haven basketeers rode to a 33 to 21 victory over Decatur. The Havenites staged a heated rally in the last minutes of the game, but the com- manding lead accumulated by the fast Niles team proved to be too large an obstacle to overcome. The score was 26 to 18. South Haven maintained for four consecutive quarters the fastest pace attained this year and soundly whipped Three Rivers by a score of 42 to 19. The Purple and Gold squad ended its 1935-36 Big Five Conference season in one of the wildest and weirdest cage games in the Conference-Dowagiac upset South Haven in a score of 34 to 30. Holubar, a reserve player went in the final period and scored 2 field goals to cinch the victory. REGIONAL Coach Otto Grien's Havenites punched through Niles zone defense to win 26 to 19. They slowly and deliberately punched at the hugging Niles zone defense to get in for close-range shots. Combined with this was the usual good defense that nipped nearly every thrust made by the Red and Black quintet. South Haven in the finals dropped a 22 to 20 decision to Sturgis High after a lucky and at times, bitter struggle for the 1936 Regional Cage title. But in this modern age of speed It grieves me much to say- For us poor souls who drive no cars, It's Leap Year every day! 44 44 an an Hotel Clerk: How'd you get here ? Visitor: just blew in with a load of cattle. Hotel Clerk: Where's the rest of 'em ?' Visitor: Down at the yard. I ain't as particular as they are! 44 44 as an And the various ushers, Attendants and shushers Were wholly outplayed and outfought. In spite of the loud interruptions From people who stood on the stage, The audience rustled Its programs, and jostled To earn, without shirking, its wage. The janitor, too, whom I wish to com- mend, lvlade the pipes bang away from begin- ning to end. Then the critic retired for a fortnight of rest, Feeling very much better with this off his chest.
