I 9 3 5 PURPLE AND G O L D THE TEACHERS' PLAY HIS year The Teachers' Club decided To go back To Their regular rouTine of puTTing on a play. LasT year a Fun NighT was subsTiTuTed for This annual evenT. The PaTsy , a comedy in Three acTs. by Barry Conners. was The TiTle of The play chosen by Miss Meyer for This year's producTion. This was Miss Meyer's TirsT year aT direcTing a play puT on by The Teachers' Club. Dorofhea Brouard and Frederick Rogers were The assisTanT direcTors. The play proved To be one of The besT pro- ducTions puT on by The TaculTy. PaTsy HarringTon, The PaTsy , so called by her Triends, a girl who is sacri- Ticed To her older sisTer, is finally rescued by her TaTher, a Traveling man, who Turns The Table and becomes boss in his home. She Triumphs as The bride of The man she loves. Mr. HarringTon is The hail-Tellow. well-meT Type-has a hearTy laugh and is usually in high spiriTs-buT can Talk back wiTh Torce and direcTness when annoyed. Grace HarringTon, PaTsy's sisTer, is a girl of TwenTy-Tour. selfish, cold, and peTulanT, excepTing when she has a purpose in being pleasant Mrs. HarringTon, The moTher, is oT peevish, overbearing Type. She considers herself a marTyr and is apparenTly unaware ThaT her unreasonable and perTulanT behavior is responsible Tor mosT oT her Troubles. Tony Anderson, Graces' ex-fiance and whom PaT is in love wiTh, is a handsome man of abouT Twenfy-Tive. He conveys The idea OT wealTh and TasTe-buT, alThough very pleasanT and agreeable in manner he is raTher shy and quieT, almosT Timid. Billy Caldwell, whom Grace Tinally marries. carries The air and manner of rehne- menT and wealTh. He is very likeable and agreeable, lively, brighT, and smiling. Sylvia is The ex-Tiance of Billy, whom Grace dislikes very much. O'FlaherTy is a middle-aged man who proves To be a real friend To PaTsy. Trip BusTy is a raTher Tough-looking Taxi driver. Miss Irene Heacox reTurned To The sysTem aTTer an absence oT Two years. The newcomers were: The Misses MargareT Merrick, MargareT OverTon, and CaTherine Provencher: Grades: The Misses CaTherine Hawley and Louise PorTerg Junior High: Miss KaTherine Ellis, vocal music. The PaTsy by Barry Connors was selecTed Tor The TaculTy play. The Club was jusTly proud oT The success oT This enTerprise and oT The sum represenTing halT The neT proceeds, which iT conTribuTed To The AThleTic AssociaTion. The Kellogg FoundaTion exTended iTs work To Van Buren CounTy Tor The TirsT Time in The fall oT I934, and in addiTion To The healTh service To The children, The Teachers derived many beneTiTs Trom The work oT The organizaTion. A week-end parTy aT The Pine Lake Camp gave The Teachers an opporTuniTy To learn someThing abouT The work oT The FoundaTion and To see The camp in operaTion. A series of six lecTures on menTal hygiene, conducTed by ProTessor J. B. Morgan, oT NorTh- wesTern UniversiTy, were sponsored by The FoundaTion. Among The memorable evenTs oT The Club during The year, were The Kiwanis dinner: The Thanksgiving banqueT, To which The members oT The Board of EducaTion were guesTs: and a ValenTine parTy. BOARD OF EDUCATION THE six TrusTees of The Board oT EducaTion, who are J. Edward Burge, PresidenT: Frank M. Demme, Vice-PresidenT7 Carl E. Dilley, SecreTaryq STanley JohnsTon. CurTis L. BeaTTy, and Dr. RuTus E. KeiThly, are all inTensely inTeresTed in The conTinuance and necessary developmenT oT educaTional righTs oT our communiTy wiTh The greaTesT possible eTTiciency on a greaTly decreased income. WiTh The careTul. Thorough planning OT SuperinTendenT L. C. Mohr, and The whole-hearTed co-operaTion of The 43 Teachers and oTher employees oT The schools, iT has been possible To mainTain The high sTandard oT The pasT years and aT The same Time reduce The cosT To our communiTy.
