152 Miss Peg Petersen Becky Ioerger HAILL OF FAME A former All-Stater and All-American from Ev- erly and now a teacher in the South Hamilton Commu- nity Schools, Hall of Famer from the year 1963, Peg Petersen. Miss Petersen, a freshman girls' basketball coach at South High, had a brilliant four year career at Everly, playing in three State Tournaments. She was an All-State selection in 1961, 1962, and 1963, also be- ing named to the All-State Tournament team in the lat- ter two years. With a career total of 4,458 points, in- cluding 1,502 in one season and 78 in one game, she'll rank high on the list of Iowa's all-time scorers. After high school, Peg went to college at Iowa Wesleyan, where she earned All-American laurels in 1964 and in the same year was a member of the United States team which played in the World Tournament held in Lima, Peru. But to be named to the Hall of Fame, one needs to be more than a great athlete. They must have excellent character and establish themselves as a good citizen. Already known for her speaking ability and her willing- ness to lend a helping hand to her physical education students, we at South High take pride in sharing with Everly--Hall of Famer Peg Petersen. IGHSAU COVER GIRL 1969 Tournament time brought mixed emotions for one South Hamilton Hawkette in particular--Becky Ioerger. Two days after the Hawkettes got bumped out of a State Tournament trip by Rockwell City in the District finals, Becky was notified that she had been selected as Cover Girl for the State Tourney. Being named Cover Girl is the highest honor we can bestow upon any one Iowa girl, remarked E. Wayne Cooley, executive secretary of the IGHSAU when he an- nounced Becky's selection. The Cover Girl, which the IGHSAU feels reflects the image of inter-scholastic athletics for girls in Iowa, is chosen literally from hundreds of high school athletics with a premium placed on appearance and personality. Becky 's athletic versatility in basketball and soft- ball is'well known. Yet during the State Tournament, as she participated in several live radio and television in- terviews, a less-publicized facet of her character ap- peared. With expert ease she fielded the questions con- cerning the value of athletics with the poise and mature judgement of an adult and the charm which belongs only to a teenager. Her answers and appearance at the tournament, as we were sure it would, brought much credit and pride to her family, her friends, teachers and coaches and her school.
