Delayne Busing Becky Ioerger Mary Ness Donna Egger Jean Magnuscu PUBLISHED BY SOUTH HAMILTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL JEWELL, IOWA DEDICATION DEDICATION ,Mr. Axel T. Andersen We, the students and faculty of South Hamilton Community High School, do hereby dedicate this 1969 school annual in fond memory of Axel T. Andersen, who died in October of 1968 of complications following surgery. Mr. Andersen served the South Hamilton Community School District first as senior high school principal, a position which he held until June of 1966, when he took over the administra- tion of the Title I program for the district, serving as administrator-teacher of the Work Study Program until his death. Mr. Andersen was respected and admired by all who had contact and associations with him. His loyalty, devotion to duty, and dedication to his job were an inspiration to the entire staff and student body. It is fitting that we commemorate this man, as he was representative of all the high qualities desirable in a person working with youth. The example that was set by Andy, by word and deed, is one that each of us as we go through life, will try to emulate. Young - June-September 19623 1962-19653 1965-19682 1968-1971 The student body and the staff of South High would like to take this opportunity to express sincere appreciation to the Board of Education for their efforts in making avail able the new Junior-Senior High school facility. It has given us a good deal of pleasure and we take great pride in having been the first occupants. We hope that through future deeds and accomplishments it will be possible for us to do justice to the confidence and trust that you have placed in the youth of our school district. SUPERINTENDENT SUPERINTENDENT 'S MESSAGE School annuals preserve for us fondest mem- ories. This book is a record of perhaps the most memorable year since the birth of South Hamilton. The combined student bodies of the junior and sen- ior high schools moved into the beautiful new fa- cility and busily set about making 68-69 the great- est year to date for South High. As you leaf through the pages you first see the enthusiastic faces of the graduates, who aspire to many things. Next, the eager underclassmen, intent upon meeting the challenge of excelling in all things. The pages devoted to activities attest to the success the students have in developing their talent and abilities in many different areas. This book portrays pictorially the many op- portunities afforded you at South Hamilton this past year, and the extent to which you availed yourself of them will determine the impact 1968-1969 will PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL 'S MESSAGE Our young people today are living and experi- encing the anxieties and problems of many levels in our society. What the outcome will be it is yet too early to see, but the pressures felt by our young people will affect many decisions they will be making today and years to come. 'We hope that the faculty of South Hamilton Senior High School can serve as a balance to pro- vide guidance through a relevant education to meet the needs of each of our students today and in the future. mmcefT'777.lLJ have on your future. -f sw, -V - s- lt?-: :QF -..-Tff:-,-.-.-.- - N5-yas... ns m - fi 4, , -ju -ka mmm En , a MW HN EY 4 2. 4 'mt Ni E. That was the somewhat unusual motivation for turning in my application for becoming an exchange student. Interviews, physicals and final application followed at a fast rate. At the end of April just before graduation the magic letter arrived. I was accepted! The summer went on and at the beginning of July I still did not know which state was to become my home for nearly a year. Naturally I expected to go to Michigan since the major part of the students go there so when I received a letter saying I would go to' Iowa I thought that would be an experience different from what most other exchange students would have. After nine months in Iowa I can honestly say I like the state, the people in it and of course South Hamil- ton. I can assure you I have enjoyed every minute here I think my host family, who immediatley accepted me not as a guest in their home, but as a member of the family, deserves many thanks. I also want to ex- press my thanks to everybody who has made my stay I here exciting and worthwhile. Harald Jochnick Harald Jochnick is -5 ,I f Y- .. -,. . :- 'I 'll ' . 1' ff-'u ,Y -f E I w w This was the second year South Hamilton par- ticipated in the Youth For Understanding program. We feel we were fortunate in having Harald Joch- nick as a foreign exchange student from Sweden. Harald proved himself to be an asset ,to the school and the community by participating in different ac- tivities throughout the year. We want to take this opportunity to wish Harald the best of luck in future years. Students, Faculty, and Residents of South Hamilton Community ,fav . Three were gradu- ated this spring, but the number of new students enrolling for 1969-70 is as yet unknown. This year these students have had work ex- perience at the following places: Roger Vold farm Charles Redling farm, Phillip 66 Service Station, Wally Cook's Cafe located on Interstate 35, Rei- setter Pack,'Ellsworth Turkey Plant, Pastor Carl- son, South Hamilton bus garage, Lunch Room, Li- brary, and Custodial Staff. HIGH PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL 'S MESSAGE As we complete our first year of occu- pancy of the combined junior-senior high school building, as represented in this year- book, it is fitting that the students be com- mended for their cooperation in making the transition a smooth one. lt required an extra effort by all involved, and the students gave 1000Zp in meeting this interesting and exciting challenge. We are certainly pleased with the results attained this year, and look for con- tinued success from the students as they be- come more fully adjusted to the potential the new facility provides. The junior high school boys and girls were keenly aware of the doors being opened to them with the move into the new school, and their contribution to the suc- cess attained this year exceeded our expec- tations. It is my wish that they will continue to make such contributions as they complete their education at South Hamilton High. Junior High School Principal JUNIOR HIGH FACULTY .17 .. 13-R I , 1. A conference championship in football, a trip to state in softball, a substate and district final in basketball, a much improved wrestling squad, excellent golf squads, fine track teams, and a hustling baseball team led South Hamilton's athletics in the 1968-69 seasonl There were- many fine individuals who represented our school in athletics, to name them would take too much space, but we are certainly proud of each and every one of them. The outstanding char- acteristics displayed would have to be the humbleness displayed in victory and the sportsman- ship and character displayed in defeat. Each of these are equally important for a well rounded life which lies ahead for all the athletes. ' I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the athletes, coaches, and parents who so willingly gave their time and effort to make the 1968-69 athletics at South Hamilton a year of great success and glory that will be remembered by all of us for years to come. While lacking the basic speed and height of most basketball centers, Jim, through hard work and perseverance developed himself into a good player. A unanimous selection for All-Conference, and Honorable Mention All-State were some of the honors he received as he battled his way into second place on the all time scoring list and third place on the all time rebound list at South High. As a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, instrumental music, football and basket- ball squads, Jim has set an excellent ex- ample for aspiring athletes at South Ham- ilton to follow. CINDER DUST MEMORIES - 1969 Competitors--that one word pretty well sums up the 1969 Hawk- ette track team and they earned it through a lot of hard work. The Hawkettes manufactured their finest season since 1966 as they won every meet on their regular season schedule. They started-.out by easily winning duals over Gilbert andWest Marshall. Then they topped a 19-team Queens Relays field at Zear- ing, scoring 87 points and cashed in their talent to annex their sec- ond straight Heart-of-lowa Conference Relays by gliding to a 138 point total. After that, the Hawkettes dominated the 13-team Rockette Relays meet at Churdan with 75 counters and regained their Hawk- ette Relays Crown by scoring 87 1X2 points. In their final regular season meet, the Hawkettes swept to their seventh consecutive Dis- trict Meet crown with 59 points in the 30-team diadem. As a result of their efforts in the District, 14 girls qualified for the State Meet in seven events. Six new school records went into the books this spring and the Hawkettes now have one of the finest set of standards in central Iowa. Ten of the marks would have placed in this year's State Meet and five of them would have been winning performances. New records came when sophomore Deb Nelson unleashed a 33' 8 effort in the shot put, junior Ruth Hill scampered over the 220-yard timbers in :33.3, Deb Lutjen, another junior, toured the 880-yard run in2:43.4 and the mile relay composed of Deb Larson, a senior, Carol John- son, a junior, and freshmen Becky Greenfield and Deb Andrews, stopped the watches in 4:23.8.Cindy Jacobson snapped the 220-yard dash record with a :28.0 clocking and Carol Johnson set a new stand- ard in the 440-yard run-- :67.7. Many fine performers will be among next year's hopefuls with 20 of 25 letter winners returning. However, any analysis of this year 's team would be incomplete without mentioning the seniors: Deb Larson, Neva Anderson, Chris Ehlert, Sue Teig and Deb John- son. Miss Larson and Miss Anderson were the co-captains and did an outstanding job in leading a relatively young team. It is my hope that our senior's examples of leadership and desire will challenge next year's team to another great season. 150 Co-Captains Deb Larson and Neva Anderson Coa c hes Ass't Coach, Miss Peg Peterseng. Ruth Hill and Terry Ahrens 152 Miss Peg Petersen Becky Ioerger HAILL OF FAME A former All-Stater and All-American from Ev- erly and now a teacher in the South Hamilton Commu- nity Schools, Hall of Famer from the year 1963, Peg Petersen. Miss Petersen, a freshman girls' basketball coach at South High, had a brilliant four year career at Everly, playing in three State Tournaments. She was an All-State selection in 1961, 1962, and 1963, also be- ing named to the All-State Tournament team in the lat- ter two years. With a career total of 4,458 points, in- cluding 1,502 in one season and 78 in one game, she'll rank high on the list of Iowa's all-time scorers. After high school, Peg went to college at Iowa Wesleyan, where she earned All-American laurels in 1964 and in the same year was a member of the United States team which played in the World Tournament held in Lima, Peru. But to be named to the Hall of Fame, one needs to be more than a great athlete. They must have excellent character and establish themselves as a good citizen. Already known for her speaking ability and her willing- ness to lend a helping hand to her physical education students, we at South High take pride in sharing with Everly--Hall of Famer Peg Petersen. IGHSAU COVER GIRL 1969 Tournament time brought mixed emotions for one South Hamilton Hawkette in particular--Becky Ioerger. Two days after the Hawkettes got bumped out of a State Tournament trip by Rockwell City in the District finals, Becky was notified that she had been selected as Cover Girl for the State Tourney. Being named Cover Girl is the highest honor we can bestow upon any one Iowa girl, remarked E. Wayne Cooley, executive secretary of the IGHSAU when he an- nounced Becky's selection. The Cover Girl, which the IGHSAU feels reflects the image of inter-scholastic athletics for girls in Iowa, is chosen literally from hundreds of high school athletics with a premium placed on appearance and personality. Becky 's athletic versatility in basketball and soft- ball is'well known. Yet during the State Tournament, as she participated in several live radio and television in- terviews, a less-publicized facet of her character ap- peared. With expert ease she fielded the questions con- cerning the value of athletics with the poise and mature judgement of an adult and the charm which belongs only to a teenager. Her answers and appearance at the tournament, as we were sure it would, brought much credit and pride to her family, her friends, teachers and coaches and her school. dm V K H J, , ..
