This education has been symbolized by The Little Red Schoolhouse. It served the needs of Colonial America, followed the pioneers on their westward movement and became one of the great pillars of American Democracy. Great contributors to American life have passed through its door. The Class of 1960 recognizes the importance in their lives of the rural school. Some members of the class attended rural schools during the years following centralization. This era of education ended in Saratoga County in June, l959, when the last one-room school closed. This yearbook is a cooperative effort to emphasize the effect of a great institution on American youth. F. The play depicted the trials of a modern day family. This capricious farce of the internal struggle between teenagers and parents was brought to life before a delighted audience. Mr. Anderson at- tempted to cope with all the family problems and still maintain his calm appearance, while Mrs. Anderson tried to control her family in a stern, just manner. The three teenage children, Betty, Bud, and Kathy, displayed an inordinate ability to become involved in many confusing situations. Under the direction of Leon Sparling and Arthur James, the entire cast of Juniors and Seniors gave a spirited and entertaining performance. Candidates for the four offices-President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer-were chosen by the administration from those who submitted their names as interested in serving. After the officers were elected by the Senior High, three representatives were chosen from each class. Mr. Howe served as advisor. By this, closer ties between the ad- ministration and students came about. Work was done on a student handbook to help underclassmen become acquainted with high school routine. Rules to cover all phases of school life were included. This year the council became members of the New York State Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Student Councils. ORCHESTRA ALL-STATE Each fall, all over New York State, selected music students from many different high schools get together in choruses, orchestras and bands. After two days of intensive rehearsal under specially chosen conductors, the three organizations in each district of the state present a full evening concert. To qualify for these groups, students must be recommended by their own director. All three organizations - the band, the orchestra, and the choral club have given assemblies to the student body. Band membership now numbers about forty. Work was done on many concert numbers in preparation for the various performances which the band gives throughout the school year. These performances include: concerts for the Junior and Senior High, football game shows at half time, Mt. McGregor for the Veterans, Memorial Day parade, Easter Concert, the Senior-Junior Play, and the competition in the New York State Music Festival. The Choral Club this year has grown considerably, especially in male voices. Lack of male voices has usually been a great problem, but this year there were many boys who joined the club. The Christmas Cantata, Wondrous Love, was given in December. This was very well received, especially because of the pantomime that was given along with it. This year also marked another first for the Choral Club. Martha, a full-length operetta, was given in May. This was the first one ever done by the club. The Orchestra was also a very active group this year. It gave a special concert to the Junior High and Senior High early in the year. Other activities include: The Christmas Concert, Christmas Assembly, Easter Concert, Graduation, J unior-Senior Play, and the Music Festival in the spring. Varsity Football Although the Bulldogs did not have a completely successful season, the team effort was much greater than the record shows. With only such veteran holdovers from last year as Reed, Canales, Prendergast, Cleland, Wood, Leombruno, Flewelling and Owens, coaches Lyle Gray and Andy McGuffin had a major rebuilding job to do. In spite of only winning two of its six league contests, three of the losing battles were very close in score. The records do not actually show a true picture of the team's ability, for the team demonstrated much spirit, determination and drive in fighting every game right down to the final whistle. Despite the loss of eight senior lettermen, the team has many able men returning to next year's squad. There are ten returning lettermen and many boys coming up from the J.V. ranks, who have been under the watchful eyes of coaches Youker and Vishneowski. VARSITY BASKETB LL In its sixth season in the Northern Conference, Coach Ron Lennox's court squad got off to a slow start, due to lack of experience, and finished the season in sixth place, with five wins and nine losses. Only four veterans remained from last year's squad, and the early part of the season was devoted to finding the proper combination of players. As a result, South High lost its first five Conference games, winning only from Whitehall in the first half of the Conference sched- ule. On the backstretch, however, the Bulldogs won four of seven games, defeating Sectional contenders Granville Q88-505 and Fort Edward C63-595 in the process. foul shooting average. in the return match. Wayne Jones, with a 16-point average in Conference play led the Red and Blue offense with 260 points and was outstanding clearing the offensive rebounds. Henry Dwyer and Lou Luciano had 195 and 189 points, respectively. Big Jim Prendergast, master of the defensive backboard, almost doubled his output of the previous season scoring 154 points. Playmaker Pete Wood had more than 35176 of the entire team's assists, to lead in that department, while personally bucketing 134 points. Ron Jarvis, hampered by early season injuries, had a 67076 In early season non-league competition South High took both games from Sectional participant Lake George, and pushed powerful Ballston into overtime, before dropping a heartbreaking 59 56 decision Close games were lost to Fort Edward and VARSITY SEASON RECORD St. Mary's as the league race began, and both Hudson Falls and Glens Falls defeated the Bull- W,H 'rf,,, Wg i,,,, dogs by wider margins. To conclude the season, Conference runner-up Hudson Falls and champion Glens Falls repeated their earlier wins, although the Lennox-men made the Indians earn their victory the hard way. Old-time Sara- toga County League opponent Corinth lost by 10 points, and the final game saw South High blast the Granville team on its own court, 88-50. Next year's team will miss four talented Seniors, all of whom earned their Block S for basketball. Big Jim Prendergast scored on 4896 of his shots, and was a demon clearing the boards, while back-court operatives Ron Jarvis, Scott Gray, and Don Flewelling were used altemately as starters and in reserve. Coach Lennox will build next year's Conference contenders around a seasoned quartet of front-court artists, Wayne Jones and Hank Dwyer, and playmakers Pete Wood and Lou Luciano, all of whom will be playing their final year for South High. Leading the race for the fifth starting berth is another foursome of Varsity Reserves: Mondie Leombruno, Bill Elder, Gary Mattison, and Bill Alden. Because of the late-season surge of the Varsity team, and the large number of returning vet- erans, South High is looking forward to an outstanding season in 1960-61. nv Ur- W Wayne jones 1521 scores against Granville as jim Prendergast 13Oj gets set for A, .Q the rebound. 5 Hank Dwyer 1291, Lou Luciano 128j, and Pete Wood 1311 follow the play. The high-flying South High Cheerleaders exhort the packed bleachers to cheer for the Bulldogs in the first Granville game. .ZX Junior Varsity Baseball 1959 The Bulldog J .V.'s looked good in posting a .500 won-lost record for a six-game season under Coach Edward Hyde. The season was marked by taking two of three games from St. Mary's, and beating Hudson Falls for the third victory. Glens Falls was the only team which managed to hold a winning percentage over the Bulldog Pups. Don Foster, Gary Mattison, Jerry Balcom, Bill Elder, Mike Capone, and Bryon Bidwell led the team in hitting. The brilliant fielding showed in committing only ten errors while their opponents had twenty-four. The weak spot was pitching because of a major rebuilding of the team. With many key players moving up for a berth on the Varsity squad, Coach Hyde will be busy, but is looking forward to a good season. 1959 RECORD Games Won - 3 Games Lost LEFT TO RIGHT: First Row: Don Foster, Herbert DuFour, Preston jenkins, Bruce Bidwell, Second Row. After being beaten by only Fort Edward and the league champs, St Mary's, the team defeated Granville for a right to be represented in the conference in the Section II playoffs. As a result, the team went to Saratoga with a determined spirit to win, and did so by defeating Schoharle and Milne in succession for the Section II title This was the initial year for baseball sectionals in this area. Larry Hawkins 1.3841 and Dick Clark C.324l led the team at the plate while Tom Prouty was the mamstay of the pitching staff With the loss of two graduates, Washburn and Oddy, the veterans Gray, Wood, Cleland, Flewelling, Luciano and Dwyer, will return this year with a possibility of another successful season in store Section II - Class C Champions lI0 1959 arsity Baseball LEFT TO RIGHT: First Row: Eric Jensen, Mickey Kipp, Michael jones, Bernard Holtz, Bill Rendo, Clark Squires, Bill Varney, jim McGuire. Non-League WRESTLI South High's wrestling Bulldogs extended their unblemished record to two full seasons, and climaxed this accomplishment by winning the first Class C Section Championship conducted by Section 2. Captain Porter Reed, Sectional Champion in the 133-lb. class, thus rang down the curtain on a two-year competitive career, during which time he won nineteen matches without ever being defeated. In winning the Northern Conference Championship, South Coach A'1d'f'WMfGUffin High racked up double wins over Glens Falls and Whitehall, and three victories over Corinth, scoring a total of 239 points while losing only 51. Coach Andrew McGuffin led a full squad to Linton High School in Schenectady for the Sectionals, where South High, a dark horse, surprised a great many schools that had partici- pated in inter-scholastic wrestling for many years, and finished sixth in a field of nineteen schools, winning Class C honors in the process. South High's 43 points in the Sectionals equalled the total points scored by the other four class C schools, and outscored such area giants as Glov- ersville, Albany, Saratoga, Bethlehem Central, and others. Semi-finalists for South High included Tom and Mike Wood, Dick Jacobie, and the eventual champion, Porter Reed. ' Four seniors, veterans of two years' undefeated teams, will be sorely missed as Coach Mc- Guffin's mat-men of the future attempt to continue their all-winning ways. In addition to Captain Reed, the Seniors are Bob Canales, Tom Wood, and Steve Ostrander. Next year's squad will, however, include such stalwarts as Mike Wood, Mike Larrow, Jerry Balcom, Pete Reed, and Bill Varney, all with outstanding records. Enthusiasm for this relatively new sport, increased by the success of the past two seasons, has greatly influenced interest in Wrestling, and South High eagerly awaits the 1960-61 campaign.
