udent council The Student Council, composed of students from grades 7-12 plus four officers, he only governing body of the school in which the students are represented. Its purpose To bring about a closer understanding between students and the administration. A new method was used this year in choosing the council members and officers. the Spring preceding the present school year, students interested in holding a council ice filled out applications. The office of treasurer is an appointive office. The student ly voted for their choice for each office, and the successful candidates were sworn into ice on Moving Up Day. This Fall other members were chosen by their individual classes. student committee, with the class advisor, selected three boys and three girls as candi- res who possessed the necessary qualifications. The class voted for one boy and one girl represent them on the council. tudent service groups ln previous years, the ninth period was called the activity period. This period now a scholarship period, with the emphasis on supervised study. The activity period was set aside for clubs and other activities such as musical ganizations and sports. Ninth period this year was set aside for extra help. This year ' k rk for wool work had preference and teachers could call students in to ma e up wo ch extra help. Thus, the club program has been curtailed. Several voluntary services are performed by a number of South High pupils for the Jtual benefit of both the students and school personnel. lt is only fitting that these e mentioned because the functions they render have proven invaluable. The Audio-Visual organization's most important duty is running the movie pro- :tors for classes and assembly programs. Ask any participant in o play or concert, and l will tell you just how helpful is the work of the Stage Crew. The preparing of the ene lus the lighting effects are two of its responsibilities. VY P The Hall Monitors provide South High with another useful service. Students in each lunch period donate their time to watch the nch 'line and make sure that no undue crowding takes place. Pupils assist the secretaries in the various offices during study halls throughout ne day by filing, answering phones, and performing many other useful services. Stu- ants walking into any of these offices will, more often than not, find a student-friend ahind a typewriter. Library assistants have various jobs: They deliver overdue notices to forgetful stu- ants, help Miss Donovan during study halls by checking out books, and prepare new :oks for library shelves.
