X r tennis -1958 at COACH: DON HAY Under the coaching of Don Hay, South High's net men came up with a near-championship in l958. ln the regular season they tied Glens Falls' record of five wins and one loss and had to go into a play-off match with the Indians. The Bulldogs cauldn't come up with two straight wins over the Indians, however, and dropped the play-off match. South High piled up thirty-three points to their opponents' thirteen which is an excellent record. The Bulldogs dropped their first match to Glens Falls Cl-43 but followed with five consecutive wins, beating Schuylerville C5-OD, Hudson Falls C4-ll, and Glens Falls l3-21. They then went into the play-off match with Glens Falls and followed with two straight wins over Johnstown C5-Ol, C6-OD. The team was composed of singles men Bob Linindoll, Barry MacEwan and Dick Vandewerker, with James Norman and Roger Mayott at doubles. All were veterans of the l957 season. Year- lings in the l958 season were Gordon Allen and Bob LaRock, who made up the second doubles team. For the l959 campaign, the Bulldogs had a new coach, Mr. Stewart Stearns. Coach Stearns played tennis at Nott Terrace High School and at Dartmouth College and provided an excellent replacement for retiring Coach Hay, who moved over to the track team. Bernie Wood, Fred Worthen and Bill Granger returned from last year's reserves along with starters Gordon Allen and Bob LaRock to form the nucleus of the squad.

.K south high's first wrestling team - undefeated champions Gutscoring their opponents by more than 200 points, South High's first wrestling team registered an undefeated season in the Northern Con- ference with six victories for Coach Andrew McGuffin. Shutting out White- hall twice, and winning a pair each from Corinth and Glens Falls, the Bulldog Matmen were really impressive in their debut. Bob Leombruno, with 6 pins in 6 matches, led the all-conquering Bull- dogs, while Captain Porter Reed, Jerry Balcom and Tom Wood also won all 6 of their matches. Wrestling 5 matches, Cliff Mull scored 5 pins, while Jim Maguire was undefeated in his 3 matches, and Fred Abare pinned both of his opponents before a shoulder iniury kept him out of competition. Bob Canales pinned Pekins of Whitehall in 22 seconds for the fastest score of the initial season. Tom Wood had a 28-second pin over Corinth's O'Connell, and Leombruno had third best time with a 30-second pin over Taft of Whitehall. Of the twenty-man mat squad, only four are Seniors and have completed their high school mat career. Larry Hawkins, who won 5 of his 6 matches by pins, and Fred Abare, undefeated in the season, were members of the first team. Fred Abare takes Top: the advantage over FRED Jerry Balcom as ABARE.
