I6 2 COACH: EDWARD HYDE The Bulldog Juniors looked brilliant in winning four of their five starts for an .800 average for the season. The J.V.'s were led by ace pitcher Louis Luciano, who won four of the five games. Leading the team in hitting were: Peter Wood C.556l, Scott Gray C.444l, Donald Flewelling i.35Ol, John Hamel i.333l, Thomas Cleland l.308l, and Sam Grover C.250l. The Junior Bulldogs collected thirty-five hits while allowing only eighteen to the opposition. The brilliant fielding showed in committing only ten errors while their opponents had twenty-four. With the graduation of many key players to the Varsity Squad, Coach Edward Hyde was busy remodeling the team this spring. HAROLD WASHBURN, Pitcher LARRY , HAWKINS, l 2nd Base I 958 varsity baseball The Bulldogs turned in an over .500 average for the 1958 season, winning seven of their thirteen starts. Coach Andrew McGuffin led his team to the best season for South High since entering the Northern Conference. Pitchers Dick Bodette, Earl Helwig, Harold Washburn and Tom Prouty took turns hurling to catcher Dave Allen. Dick Sweet held down first base while Larry Hawkins and Earl Helwig guarded the keystone corner. Dick Farry did a great job at third base. ln the outfield, Luther Taylor, Steve Blakeslee, Steve Dickinson and Tom Prouty showed sensational fielding abil- ity. The Bulldogs had great hitters with Prouty L3857, Washburn t.308D, Taylor l.28ll, Sweet t.276l, and Allen C2625 leading the team. During the season, the Bulldogs split with Argyle, St. Mary's, Gran- ville and Fort Edward. Winning two out of three starts from Hudson Falls, the diamond-men took a single game from Whitehall, but lost one to Glens Falls. The Bulldogs were not shut out all season, but managed to blank Hudson Falls due to the fine pitching of Earl Helwig, who allowed the vis- itors only two hits for the game. Three of the six losses during the campaign were by one-run margins. Playing their final game for the Bulldogs were Allen, Sweet, Helwig, Farry, Taylor, Blakeslee, Dickinson and Bodette. The team lost eight players last,June but Hawkins, Prouty, Washburn and Jackson were available as a nucleus of the 1959 team. From the outstanding JayVee team came Don Flewelling, Sam Grover, Tom Cleland, Louie Luciano, Scott Gray and Henry Dwyer.
