Mr. unDewerker is Clerk of the ard. dedication We, the students of the South Glens Falls Central School, respectfully dedicate this sixteenth volume of the Arrowhead to the past and present members of the Board of Education. These dutiful people have fought to uphold the standards of our school with no reward except the achievement of a better school and community. As the nucleus of our whole system, the Board of Education is responsible for everything taught and for those who teach. All decisions rest upon their shoulders. The responsibility for all the building programs has been theirs. Seldom recognized for their successes, they are quickly censured for their failures. They have suffered through public opposition and criticism but will soon reach, it is hoped, their ultimate goal. May we humbly show our appreciation to these dedicated people, who have made our school system one of the best in New York State. We only hope that we, the present student body of the South Glens Falls Central School, are deserving of the burdens which these people have borne for us. The class of l959 assembled for its first official meeting as Freshmen. Under the capable guidance of Mr. Walker and Mr. Gorman, no time was wasted in electing class officers. Richard Kobor was elected President with Richard Clark serving as Vice-Presdent, Nancy Rising as Secretary, and Marsha Anderson as Treasurer, an office which she was to hold for the next four years .... Ambition was no stranger to us, two dances plus the profit from candy and card sales helped to add money to the newly formed treasury .... Freshmen participated in various clubs and activities and were represented in Student Council by John Jones and Edward Curtis. Sophomoresl lt hardly seemed possible that one year of high school life had passed. Newly elected officers were: President, Richard Clark, Vice-President, Larry Hawkins, and Secretary, Sharon Lanphear .... One major activity highlighted the year -- a very successful dance which was attended by many area students .... Elizabeth Klausner, Jacqueline Hamilton, Judith MacEwan, and Edward Curtis kept the class informed in the field of student government. Another year flew by and the class of '59 found itself in its Junior year. Chosen as leaders were: Joanne DeGarmo, President, John Jones, Vice-President, and Emilie Clark, Secretary .... Numerous activities filled the l957-58 school season for the JolIy Juniors . . . magazine sales . . . a dance, The Record Rock . . . two food sales . . . the Junior- Senior play, The Life of the Party . . . the Junior Prom, Blue Hawaii . . . Representing the Juniors in Student Council were: Myrl Solberg, Harry Gutheil, Richard Clark, Edward Curtis, Nancy Rising and Frederick Worthen. September, l958 .... Seniors, at last! Officers elected this eventful year were: President, James Gormely, Vice- President, Jacqueline Hamilton, Secretary, Emilie Clark. Holding the money bags for the last time was Marsha Anderson .... Edward Curtis and Catherine Freebern served as representatives in student government. Presiding as officers in Student Council were: Joanne DeGarmo, Presi- dent, and Myrl Solberg, Treasurer .... This year, however, belonged to each Senior as an individual .... His hopes, ambitions, and dreams were about to be realized .... As the year drew to a close and the door to the adult world opened, every member of the class felt that South High had accomplished what it had set out to do in preparing him for the future. The radiant queen, Emilie Clark, received her crown from her predecessor, Ann McBride. Written by Vlarijane and Joseph Hayes, the play depicted the semi-Bohemian family, 'he Hughes, who moved into a new town. They became involved in a series of complicated events, :ulminating in disaster on the prom -night. The wise readjustments of the characters to one another and to lite made the play both unusual and worthwhile. Under the direction of Leon Sparling and Arthur James, the entire cast of Juniors and Seniors gave a spirited and convincing interpretation. Vivid evidence of the hard work done by the stage crew was the exceptional scenery and lighting effects. 54 X Ann Ruth tells Pat Blackburn, Just a little more this way, please. cast Jean Hughes ,cc.cc......,v..c,,, Marsha Anderson Mildred Hughes ...., . b,.,,.... Its purpose To bring about a closer understanding between students and the administration. A new method was used this year in choosing the council members and officers. the Spring preceding the present school year, students interested in holding a council ice filled out applications. The office of treasurer is an appointive office. The student ly voted for their choice for each office, and the successful candidates were sworn into ice on Moving Up Day. This Fall other members were chosen by their individual classes. student committee, with the class advisor, selected three boys and three girls as candi- res who possessed the necessary qualifications. The class voted for one boy and one girl represent them on the council. tudent service groups ln previous years, the ninth period was called the activity period. This period now a scholarship period, with the emphasis on supervised study. The activity period was set aside for clubs and other activities such as musical ganizations and sports. Ninth period this year was set aside for extra help. This year ' k rk for wool work had preference and teachers could call students in to ma e up wo ch extra help. Thus, the club program has been curtailed. Several voluntary services are performed by a number of South High pupils for the Jtual benefit of both the students and school personnel. lt is only fitting that these e mentioned because the functions they render have proven invaluable. The Audio-Visual organization's most important duty is running the movie pro- :tors for classes and assembly programs. Ask any participant in o play or concert, and l will tell you just how helpful is the work of the Stage Crew. The preparing of the ene lus the lighting effects are two of its responsibilities. VY P The Hall Monitors provide South High with another useful service. The prilinalry d th l s. ity of these policemen is to keep the students moving on the right si e o e a 1is prevents much unnecessary confusion. The branch labelled Cafeteria Workers may be divided into three different areas. mbers of the o ortunity class assist the women in the kitchen while Diane Hall, a .e pp , inior serves as cashier. Students in each lunch period donate their time to watch the nch 'line and make sure that no undue crowding takes place. Pupils assist the secretaries in the various offices during study halls throughout ne day by filing, answering phones, and performing many other useful services. Stu- ants walking into any of these offices will, more often than not, find a student-friend ahind a typewriter. Library assistants have various jobs: They deliver overdue notices to forgetful stu- ants, help Miss Donovan during study halls by checking out books, and prepare new :oks for library shelves. office Emilie Clark, June Pot- ter, Lorraine Swears, Edythe Friday, Marilyn Carey and Beverly Daw- son, shown behind the secondary office coun- ter, are Arlene Welles' crew. assislanls Eleanor Poucher, who assists Marie Wilson in the Main Office, tries her hand at the IBM. ,fs , 'fl R' . , an-viii ,K l l an. After a boy has earned a varsity letter he is asked to become a member of the club and if he chooses to join he is subject to an informal and later a formal initiation. ln the fall and winter months, Varsity Club members sell Coke at the football and basketball games. From Spring of i958 to the Winter of l959, South High's teams did exceptionally well. While posting a better than .500 record, and showing a great deal of spirit, the South High boys displayed good sportsmanship throughout the year. The conditioning of the Bulldogs, on the whole, was good. The batsmen, cinder- men, and gridders were of the best conditioned teams in the league. While this showed up in the two spring sports it seemed to have little effect on the fall season's team. Moving on to the Winter, South High came up with a championship wrestling team and although it started out slowly, a basketball team with a good record. Outstanding men from this year's graduating class were Larry Hawkins ffootball, wrestling, baseballl, Dick Clark Cfootball, basketball, trackl, Dick Reynolds ffootball, base- balll, Chuck Graves, a standout in basketball, Jim Gormely, ffootball, basketball, trackl, Bob La Rock ffootball, wrestling, baseballl, Dick Kobor Cfootball, trackJ, and Jim Bolio, an asset to the track team. Glad Jackson, who has completed his athletic eligibility, was also vital to the track, football, and basketball squads. Those juniors who have looked exceptionally well this year are Jim Prendergast, Bob Canales, Porter Reed, Tom Wood, Scott Gray, Bob Leombruno, Tom Cleland, Don Flewelling and Ron Jarvis. The school is grateful for the accomplishments this year and looks forward to even greater laurels from next year's teams. south glens falls athletic ass'n Almost two hundred men belong to the SGFAA, an organization dedicated to the young people of the community. Early in the season, Coach Gray started the team on s way with the split T formation plays, typical of recent Bulldog teams. After learning ie strong points of the line, the coaches added some new plays to the T series which :lded strength, as well as variety, to the Bulldog's bite, Due to the fine workouts planned Jr the Canines, they found themselves among the top conditioned teams in the Northern onference. This showed up in the fact that there were no serious injuries received by nyone except for a scraped knuckle or turned ankle. In the scoring column this year, Larry Hawkins registered three touchdowns and ne conversion for a total of nineteen points. Helmsman Mike Oddy, Halfback Sam Grover nd End Bob Canales contributed twelve points each, and Dick Clark tallied four con- ersions, a .500 average. The Line, handicapped by lack of weight, turned in good showings at the White- all and Glens Falls games by holding the Maroons scoreless, and losing to the Indians y only two points. This was a moral victory. Halfback Joe Leombruno, Guard John Fitz- erald and Linebacker Bob LaRock relieved Dick Kobor, Porter Reed and Mike Oddy espectively in defensive berths. Guard Tom Wood, Tackles Don Dixon and Dick Reynolds, nd Ends Jim Prendergast and Bob Canales ground it out all the way with Jim Gormely nd Jerry Dwyer seeing much action. Veteran Halfbacks Larry Hawkins and Sam Grover, and Fullback Dick Kobor did nost of the ball carrying this year. Mike Oddy called the signals. Competition with larger schools at ie Johnstown Sectionals was complicated by mid-season injuries to key personnel, so 1ey were unable to repeat their previous Sectional Championship. The high point of the season for the South High cindermen was their convincing lctory at the Glens Falls Annual Invitational Meet at Glens Falls on May l0. Despite we stiff rivalry of Hudson Falls, St. Mary's, Glens Falls, Granville, Whitehall, Fort Edward, loversville and Corinth, the Bulldogs came through with top honors of the day. The 7 points tallied by South High earned them the beautiful trophy which graces the :hool's trophy case. The Bulldogs made their standout debut April 30 by crushing Fort Edward and t. Mary's at home, 5l-29-24. Here, Ron Measeck started a string of wins that was not wterrupted until his injury at the mid-season mark. Ron vaulted l0 feet and broad-jumped HEAD COACH. l8' l l for his double victory. Dick Kobor also scored a double victory ' in the l8O-yard low hurdles and the 220 dash. His 23 seconds time in the 220 was a new school record. Jim Gormely copped the milej Jim Bolio won the 880 and Jim Prendergast won the shot to make j JAV, their debut satisfactory. The After a 69-l5 romp over Ballston Spa, in their second meet, RON LENNOX ai ' 'X 5 Hudson Falls finally overcame South High's cindermen in their third outing. Still Measeck kept up his victorious rampage with a vault of lO' 6 and a jump of l9' 3 . Other victors in South High's first set- 'P' WR., back were Steve Dickinson, Jim Bolio, Dick Kobor and Jim Prender- gast. Final Score . . . Hudson Falls 57, South High 45. However, when South High ventured to Hudson Falls the following week, the Bulldogs demonstrated the fighting spirit of the South High cindermen. Here Ron Measeck vaulted ll' lV2 to set an outstanding high school record. f flew by both Hudson Falls and Whitehall to win by nine points. This . .. ' f liti During the l958 campaign, Jim Pren- J, dergast captured the shot record with a l toss of 45' lO , and Dick Kobor lowered l his marks in the hurdles to 20.7 seconds, and in the 220-yard dash to 23 seconds flat. Ron Meoseck also took individual scoring honors for the year. He scored 48 points in six main track meets, for an average of 8 points per meet. i Without the aid of the injured Meoseck, i the Bulldogs travelled to Johnstown on June J 7th to compete in the class B Sectionals. J Here, the team produced 8 points. Captain Jim Bolio and Jim Prendergast took fourth places in their specialties, while Jim Garme- ly and Dick Kobor finished second in their events. Kobor's third best time of the day in the l8O-yard low hurdles earned him a bid to the State Track Meet Championships at West Point on June l4th. For the 1959 Track Season, Coach Lennox had a nucleus of a dozen seasoned veterans to help carry the cindermen to a successful schedule. l958 Captain Jim Bolio returned, along with Jim Gormely, Bob Canales, Dick Kobor, Jim Prendergast, Gladwin Jackson, Eric Jensen, Ray Albert, Dick Clark, Tom Cle- land and Dieter Eveleth. Although Ron Meoseck was sorely missed due to his tour of duty in the United States Army, the Bulldogs of South High, bolstered by their new mascot, did their ut- most to overcome this deficit. . . . The Bulldogs cauldn't come up with two straight wins over the Indians, however, and dropped the play-off match. The Bulldogs dropped their first match to Glens Falls Cl-43 but followed with five consecutive wins, beating Schuylerville C5-OD, Hudson Falls C4-ll, and Glens Falls l3-21. They then went into the play-off match with Glens Falls and followed with two straight wins over Johnstown C5-Ol, C6-OD. The team was composed of singles men Bob Linindoll, Barry MacEwan and Dick Vandewerker, with James Norman and Roger Mayott at doubles. All were veterans of the l957 season. Year- lings in the l958 season were Gordon Allen and Bob LaRock, who made up the second doubles team. For the l959 campaign, the Bulldogs had a new coach, Mr. Stewart Stearns. Coach Stearns played tennis at Nott Terrace High School and at Dartmouth College and provided an excellent replacement for retiring Coach Hay, who moved over to the track team. He recalls his own school days and subsequent entrance into the Glens Falls family of employees. I was fortunate, says Glennie, to have chosen a career with a growing company where my work has been steady and where there's always opportunity for advancement. He hopes that many young men and women in the class of '59 will consider visiting or writing the Glens Falls about post-high school or post-college careers in our continually ex- panding insurance business. As you near the end of the i959 Arrowhead, allow me the privilege of using s last page to thank those who contributed to its success. Only those who participated this project . . . students, faculty members, photographers, and printers . . . can fully preciate the satisfaction experienced at the completion of the yearbook. We are grateful the school staff for allowing us to disrupt their schedule in order to take pictures. l iuld especially like to express my appreciation to those responsible for giving me the ivilege of being editor. We would never have successfully completed the Arrowhead without the help of 2 many people who so unselfishly gave of their time. Mr. Gorman, who also was the isiness advisor, had the job of proofreading along with Mr. Walker. Also very valuable us in the art and English departments were Miss Frascatore and Mrs. Kelleher respec- fely. Most of the pictures in this yearbook were taken by Ramark Studio of Schenectady id the printing was done by Bullard-Glencraft Printing, Incorporated, of Glens Falls. idge Solberg was responsible for the designing of the cover, the end sheets, the title nge and the section divisors. The cooperation given by all was greatly appreciated. We were fortunate in having Mr. Raych as our advisor. l-lis experience with year- ioks proved invaluable, not only in planning this Arrowhead, but also in teaching the :iff members many things about the production of a book of this type. This knowledge ll be especially valuable in future years to the underclassmen who worked with us on is project. I hope that you enjoyed reminiscing over the past year as you read this book. was a pleasure to have worked on it. EDITOR-l N-Cl l l EF The format of this book is based upon the artistic experiments of the Dutch artist, Piet Mondrian N872-l9447. By l9l7, in Holland, these had developed into the movement known as De Stijl or The Style. The Style makes use of right angles, straight lines, primary colors, and asymmetrical, or occult, balance. The Style has had a colossal impact upon all levels of contemporary art until - its origin forgotten -- it has become practically synonymous with modern design. 56 ,TV I-v. .LLJ . --- bg,-. -.- v lu. xr .. .,--K. .if -Yung at Quin: 'rife' ff.
