A nd, last, but not least, for your never-failing help in completing our yearbook. We, the Class of 1953, do dedicate to you . . . Miss Peria, our ARROWHEAD We Win! With Pride Without the generosity of Mrs. Hyde the Glens Falls area would lack much in cultural stimulation and accomplishment. Not only has she opened her collection of master- pieces to all interested members of her own and the surrounding communities, but to them is also given the opportunity for free instruction in painting and drawing. Here we have all enioyed the works of Raphael, da Vinci, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, . . . to the art collection of MRS. LOUIS F. HYDE of Glens Falls. Renoir, Picasso and Homer, which grace the walls of her home. Many of the works of art found in this book were photographed there under the supervision of the curator, Mr. Joseph Jeffers Dodge. We, the students of the South Glens Falls Senior Class, therefore, extend to you, Mrs. Hyde, our deepest appreciation for your kindness in enriching our lives with your treasures. 931' 6 Looking from the Library into the Patio . . . in the doorway a 5th Century BC Greek Mourning Figure, on the wall Van Dyck's Portrait of a Man. wg ug,-5 wuvp Mifg-v 'ee The Hyde Collection contains some of the finest 18th Century French furniture in New York State, as this view in the Green Room indicates. si tif 3. Although the squad had only two veterans from the previous championship team, the squad worked hard and, when the dust cleared, it sported a 4-2-1 record. When game time rolled around at Warrensburg, it found Bill Cutler and Loren Rhodes at ends, Jack Celeste at center and Gary Lashway, Phil Farry and Gary Duell in the backfield. South High won this game 40-24. The squad had little trouble in beating Cambridge 49-6 and then came the all important Salem game. The game was played under the lights before a crowd of over one thousand. lt could have gone either way, but Salem finally squeezed out a 13-6 victory in a game that had fans talking for weeks. The Bulldogs played Greenwich in another thriller which ended in a 26-26 tie. The following Saturday we iourneyed to Ballston. It lust wasn't our day and the final tally showed Ballston 40 to South High's 27. South High, looking the best they had all year, then rebounded and defeated Hoosick Falls 38-l2. The Bulldogs ended their season on a winning note by defeating Schuylerville 33-l7. At the end of the season, South High was honored when the Tri-County League chose Phil Farry to play first string back, Loren Rhodes second team end and Gary Lashway second team back, on the All-Star Team. - 9. Sac cr Zlzampiou 1952 The South High soccer team, piloted by Coach Murry O'Neil, came through this year to finish up co- champions with Luzerne in the Tri-County League. Led by Co-Captains Jack Potter and Jack Conklin, they flashed a 7 win, 3 ties and no loss record, when the final whistle was blown. The game that sent the team to the sectionals was the win over Lake George, when goalie Jack Potter made a sensational stop of a final-minute penalty kick, to give South High a l-O victory. For the first time in the squad's history, they went to the sectionals, but dropped a close decision to Corinth 2-l in the.first game. South High had only two regulars back from their 1951-52 championship squad to serve as a nucleus for building the rest of the club. However, the Bulldogs showed plenty of fight and determination and again landed up on the top as Co- champs of the Saratoga County League. Jack, Potter, considered the number one high school ball player in the area, was the backbone of the club as he amassed a total of 489 points and set a new school and eastern New York 'scoring record with 51 points in the Hudson Falls game. Jack Celeste tallied 223. Other Iettermen who contributed much to the team were John Donnelly, Bill Cutler, and Craig Doherty, all rebound artists, and Jack Gatchell, the spark-plug who held the team together so many times. After taking the measure of Ballston 64-42 in a post-season playoff, the Bulldog hoopsters missed a sectional bid as they lost a 51-49 thriller to Corinth in the final play-off game. When things were brighten- ing up, Andy Husarik was called up to Varsity and it no doubt hurt the squad. The J.V.'s were fed by their bucket man, Don Allen, who poured through a sea- son's total of 193 points, and by scrappy forward Jim Cutler, who bucketed 154 points. Dick Potter and Bob Farry improved steadily and showed plenty of poten- tially for future years as the former scored 98 and the latter 88 points. Much credit must also be given to Andy Husarik who tallied 77 points in 12 games and tfplkrfu to the keen ball handling of Ned Roach who hooped 73. li assi M .., X ' fait if M rf 'C 'V lip ll WL Pa,.f Q Q X L nfl' K 3 IIL X L ,f WE THEY WE THEY Ballston 4 7,,,,a 33 47 'Ballston ,oo,,oo.oa..AA,,c 550 44 Corinth fff.....A.d .,A7,, 3 3 38 Corinth ,,....,,,.accc..ccc. 41 43 Hudson Falls ...aaa..,aaa 42 45 'Fort Edward aaa........s.c 47 56 Fort Edward ....d bd,,,, 5 4 48 'Hudson Falls .sssccsss 5 ,44 65 Burnt Hills ..dbbd. ,,.,,, 3 5 38 'Burnt Hills ...... - cccccccc 45 49 5Cl1UYlerville . .,7,. 58 33 Schuylerville oo..oa,..., 543 47 Greenwich bbb.. 7 ,,tas 55 39 'Greenwich .ov..., 44 51 'Hoosick Falls ....Vv..., ,51 24 Hoosick Falls ..,..oaooaaa 37 25 Slillwaier .,...,. ..,s , 52 Q28 'Stillwater ,,,,,,s,,s,. 23,68 37 f lf X 'Denotes home games A F 1 f , 1-li . NX MISS HELEN J. CORNELL Coach Weather permitting, the girls interested in Field Hockey played Glens Falls and Schuylerville, and several intramural games. The Schuyler girls, playing their posi- tions well and hitting sharply, topped the South High Misses 3 to l at Schuylerville. In the return game they again displayed their ability at hockey and the local team went down 5 to l. The girls did not finish the season en- tirely defeated, as they won 3 to 2 on the Glens Falls field. Later, on the same field, they scored a 5 to 2 shut-out. Jean Roehner, forward center, and Joan Chapman, left wing, shared scoring honors. To conclude the season, the Field Hockey Team was fairly successful at the Green- wich Play Day. Despite cold weather and snow flurries, South High won 2 out of 3 games. I fiicld I Hockey First row, left to right: Mary Swears, Lois Washburn, Eleda Washburn, Phyllis Chapman. Second row: Kay Bouchard, Pat Linehan, Sally Lavin, Joan Chap- man. Third fow: Miss Cornell, Carmen Dwyer, Jean Roehner, Cora Sue Butler, Beverly Abare. Fourth row: Sonia Plude, Pat Jacobie, Eleanor Center- bar, Darleen Palmer. 55' The Girls' intramural basketball team saw limited action this year, only playing two away games and participating at a play day in Ballston, where they played Corinth, Ballston, and Burnt Hills, winning one out of three games. Miss Marion Betar accompanied them to Play Day. The Schuylerville game was played on Friday the l3th, and the girls let the date get the best of them, losing 24 to 31 in a good, fast ball game. South High guards put up a good defen- sive zone but Schuylerville had the advantage in height. Girl f First row, left to right: Cora Sue Butler, Darleen Palmer, Sonia Plude, Jean Roehner, Lois lngalsbe. Second row: Phyllis Mayott, Doris Craw, Pat Linehan, Joan Chapman. Third row: Sally Lavin, June Lid- strom, Eleanor Centerbar, Virginia Orcutt. ln the second game, the South High girls lost by the slim margin of one point. It was a high- scoring, nip and tuck battle with the final de- cision a 53-52 victory for Fort Edward. Jean Roehner and Joan Chapman looped 20 points each and Virginia Orcutt also hit double figures with l2 points. Sally Lavin, Pat Linehan, Sonia Plude, and Lois lngalsbe did well on rebounds. ln intramurals after school, Freshmen, Sopho- more, Junior and Senior girls competed for the championship of the school. l6'a5k Hfbllff it f :- W. 5'- , 4, ..,,,-.-I . f- ss- if - K ' .nge-- v f W ' , .5 f - w, ' ' , f '., ki A 'W V . 4: Fi.. 1 1- ' 'i ' 3 ,A ,, X 4 v . 3 81 N x .4 x - n ' -S., .3 . 1-nr 41 Ny' 9 45 2 qw Q' '-v 'hsx Va.
