4 DEDICATION We, the seniors of South Girard l-ligh School, seeing our high school life in retrospect, pause to acknowledge a debt that we owe to our parents of all South Girard students. By work and sacrifice you gave us our opportunity of gaining an excellent high school education. We hope that in looking over this annual, you will perhaps recapture some of the glamour of your own school days, and at the same time gain a fuller understanding of the studies and recreation of South Girard l-ligh School. For this reason and be- cause we know that our family life and our school life are closely linked, we affectionately dedicate our l962 annual to you - The parents of South Girard l-ligh School. ACKNUWLEDGEMENT We have cleared the site and laid the foundation now it is left up to us to build. Being true to our motto we now realize that the time is at hand when we inevitably cannot and will not sit idly by and let time pass on without making this acknowledgement. We the graduating class of 62 would like to acknowledge the P.'l'.A., the community and its entirety for it, indefatigable effort to promote our school program. Dear Students, As you use this book in the future to remind you of pleasant memories and friendships, we hope it also can serve to recall the primary purpose of the public school. This purpose is to the fullest of his capabilities so that he may become a worthwhile, contribut- ing member ot society in the community where he lives. We hope you will be able to know that your school has helped you in this development. Sincerely, DAVID SELF MR. WARREN RICHARDS Assistant Supt. CLASS COLORS: Lavender and Wllite CLASS FLOVVER: Lavender Orchid CLASS H ISTORY BY EDNA CANNON It was the year September l958, when our class entered the Corridors of the South Girard High School, filled with excitement, we began those wonderful High School Days. As we entered the corridors we were filled with anxiety with the challenges that confronted us. Our class became the largest Freshman Class ever to enter the corridors of South Girard High School, because of the many students being transferred from the Phenix City Elementary 84 Junior High School. Under the careful guidance of Mr. J. S. Abron, Mrs. J. Rowell, Mrs. A. C. Posey and Mr, E. Bailes, we were soon able to overcome our fears with much ease. Most of us became active members in the various Campus activities. Frank Bellamy, William Daniels, Tom Harris, Larry Miles, Johnny Hill, Leroy Pearson, Joseph Austin, James Adams, and Leroy Carter repre- sented us in basketball. Frank Bellamy, Albert Lee and James Jenkins began their career in football. Daisy Benton and Erma Sellers became members of the cheering squad, Some of us became interested in music and joined the band, These music lovers were Lucile Morris, Louise Madden, Bessie Allen, Geraldine Chambers, Helen Black, Gloria Ezekiel, James Feagins, Harry Cox, James Jones, Austin Sumbry, Charles Comer, and Willie Wright. At the close of our Freshman year we lived with much eagerness to return to school in September. At the beginning of the next year, we became Sophomores. We Griggs, Curtisteen Walker, Bessie Allen, and Jimmy Edmond became presi- were now inclined to put our talents and skills to good use. Our sponsors were still, Mr. Abron, Mrs, Rowell, Mrs. A. C. Posey and Mr. E. Bailes. lda dents of the four sections. Our football and basketball teams were superb. Gloria Ezekiel, Lillie B. Williams, Bobbie Williams, Bessie Allen and Geraldine Chambers became News Commentators. Bobbie Williams and Carrie Stafford became high stepping Majorettes: Winston Goggins Drum Major. After working so hard we were at last Seniors. Each of us had that dignified expression, and we felt that we were ready to confront the challenge of the world. Our sponsors were Mr. R. Lowe and Lester Mason. Tom Harris was still our president, Those of us who had started out as mere members of the campus activities were now the leaders. Our football and basketball teams were Great Stuff , with such players as Frank Bellamy, Tom Harris, William Daniel, Albert Lee, Sam Bellamy, Larry Miles, Edgar Jackson, George Stickney, Anderson Mack, and James Adams. Curtisteen Walker, Daisy Benton still with the cheering squad with Curtisteen Walker the Captain. Bobbie Williams, Carrie Stafford, Helen Black, Margaret Gosha, Mary Epps and Joann Lewis were Majorettes: Winston Goggins Drum Major and Edna Cannon still halftime announcer. Edna Cannon was crowned Miss Blue Streak with Catherine Phillips and Gloria Ezekiel attendants. Carrie Stafford was elected Miss Sweetheart and lda Griggs won the title of Miss Senior . Leon Todd and Geraldine Chambers represented us in the l962 Jabber- wock, and Edna Cannon won second place in the Second Annual Oratorical contest. Some of us were still outstanding members of the band. As the time takes its tolls we retrospect over the four years we have been striving. We started out as a great and large class, we have lost some and gained some. We have now made history. Years will come and years will go, but we will forever be remembered as That Great Class of l962 . Beginning our junior year, Tom Harris, became our president. Our sponsors were Mr, R. Lowe, Mr. L. Mason and Mr. Leo Harrison. We were proud of ourselves when Bobbie Williams became first attendant to Miss Blue Streak. Larry Miles became one of our News commentators with Edna Cannon Alternative News Commentator and halftime Show announcer. Curtisteen Walker and Dorothy Smith had now become members of the cheering squad. Gloria Ezekiel, and Catherine Phillips became attendants to Miss Sweetheart, near the close of our junior year we sponsored a unique Junior 81 Senior Prom, with the Theme Spanish Harlem . Music was rendered by JO JO and The Lagarters, Our Class colors were Lavender and White. CLASS SONG lTune of Exodus? By Larry Miles 8- Curtisteen Walker Dear South Girard the time is here to part through years that we have shared with you. We loved you true and dear-time passed so swift-ly have seems as tho we only started yesterday. So as the doors of high school close with us we'll hold thy name up with praise, tho we are leav-ing you, you'll still be by our side, with the help of God l know that you'll be strong. Thy halls we walked in-stilled our hearts with light, your campus filled our hearts with love. The Ma-ny sorrow time re-veal our strife and pain, Then we saw a love that we must hold for thee. So take our hands-and walk this land with us and give us courage to move on, to high-er claims of tame, that we might hail thy name, glo-ry be thy happy moment lies a-head. To make you proud ot us-we'll do our best io keep thy name with love and praise-until the end we'll love you true. CLASS POEM By: Geraldine Chambers We the members of the senior class, must think of our future and not our past - We are on our way to a new starting indeed, it is time tor our departing. For many of us there will be sorrow, and for others, there will be a better tomorrow - The juniors are happy and glad But as we leave, our hearts are sad. Some of us have a future to obtain which will call for many heartaches and pains It is left to us to do our best and try to pass our future test. JUNIORS MESSAGE To the members of the Senior Class: Our unbounded gratitude for your cooperation throughout the year and for your interest in all that has pertained to our school. ln l959 the need of a blueprint for living was more apparent than at any previous time. We are living today what will be history of tomorrow, and whether we wish it or not, our influence is tilting the balance of fate for or against us. To assure the balance in the right direction, it becomes necessary for us to make detinite decisions. Plato said Life unexamined is not worth living . We are urging you to become a persistent examiner of lite, habitually inquisitive, so that you may prepare a functional philosophy for daily living. We do not refer to the type of surface questioning that breeds only cynicism, but to deep in- tellectual curiosity directed toward understanding what is and preparing for what ought to be. Only through such understanding are we capable of implementing ideas into tangible realities. Our most sincere wish to you, that success is yours what ever you do. Sponsors Mr. Leo T.
