Years will come and years will go and those of us who now roam the campus of Dear Ole South Girard will take untiring pleasure to turn the pages of this volume remembering old faces. As time takes its toll, and some future events exist in our mind we feel deep in our hearts a sincere feeling of gratitude to those who have been patient in every way and helpful to us in our struggles from day to day. Friends and acquaintances of South Girard High, we shall forever more remember the experiences we have shared. Dezicafian We, the juniors of South Girard High School realize the importance of an education. Remembering our school and the hardships we have encountered during the previous years. We are endeavoring to express our appreciations to our faculty and the Parents and Teachers Association for the splendid job they have done toward us. Because they exemplify all the traits we would like to acquire for our own personalities and characters, we, the Junior class of 1961, dedicate this Bulldog to our ideals. Acknvwledgemanf The junior class of 1961, is proud to present to the public a book which we believe and hope will be a great inspiration in the future, to those who are affiliated with this class. We would like to acknowledge the P. T. A. for their tre- mendous effort in helping us to make this project possible. We would also like to extend appreciations to the mer- chants of this area for helping us to sponsor this book. The junior class of 1961, shall not procrastinate in recip- rocating the kindness and effort that have been shown by the community and its entirety. Dear Students: This annual represents another point in the development of your life. Your school experiences have been varied, but even when many of you did the same thing, the results have been different for each of you. One of the great truths of life is shown by this fact. Even though we all see and hear the same thing, each of us sees or hears it in light of our own background. May you always strive to enlarge your understandings so that your new experiences will have richer meanings for you. Sincerely, DAVID SELF Superintendent Each year the privilege of extending best wishes to you is seemingly more vital than the year before. Your accomplishments are many: your basic goals have been reached, and now you move into what was yesterday's tomorrow. -The road ahead is prepared for those who wish to exert the effort to suc- ceed provided we can and do understand that success is to be measured by many yardsticks and the least of these is material wealth. May you enjoy many blessings through service to your fellowmen. Sincerely, Warren Richards, Assistant Superintendent JAMES BENJAMIN MERRIWEATHER A. B. Morris Brown College M. A. New York University Adv. Studies - New York University Principal of South Girard High School 1946 to 1961 Prilmjml is Message It was just a matter of a few years ago for some of you and to others, it is still a new adventure. I speak of the day that each of you entered high school. Needless to say, that for some, it was simply the step of moving from one grade to the other. Let me remind each of you of the importance of facing reality and grasping every oppor- tunity to drink from the fountain ofknowledge. THIS IS REALITY! There are no limita- tions to education and it is unheard of to feel that you have secured enough. Classify yourselves among the thousands of girls and boys who are making decisions about their future professions. Be ever mindful of the fact that between your parents and your alma mater, the support that you will receive will only be surpassed by our desire to see you as wholesome young men and women who are taking your places in a progressing society. TO OUR SENIORS: CONGRATULATIONS! You have indeed been a significant part of our family. We shall be quite aware of your absence in the years to come, yet, reminded of you because of the contributions that you have made in your individual ways. TO OUR FACULTY: Again, I take pride in expressing appreciation to you for your remarkable support of our program. It has not been easy but the load is always lifted when you have the cooperation of an unselfish faculty, as you. TO OUR P. T. A: You are indeed the foundation of our school. We thrive be- cause of you. Your unending labor in our behalf have given us an opportunity to meet the complexities of a school year. Smivr Message Education is the preparation for knowledge and it is the imparting of knowledge in proportion to that preparation. We, the seniors of 1961, are proud to combine the es- sentials of education received from our Alma Mater, South Girard High and are prepared to go forth into the world to use all of our abilities to the utmost and to find that function of vocation for which we are best fitted. To the Juniors, a reminder of the seven lamps ofwisdom: Courtesy, Tolerance, Loyalty, Ambition, Courage, Honor and Imagination. These are theroots we possess, you must seek them. Thanks for your splendid cooperation and we do wish you a successful course. 611155 flisfrfry By: Charlie Mae Sumbry The discovery of the Class of 1961 It was only four years ago, September 8, 1957, our class entered the corridors of South Girard High School its Freshman year, a band of eager restless youth, seeking for more wisdom and knowledge: but re- cognized the creed that started, the road of learning is rough. As we strolled down the corridors we observed the pleasant and understanding forces of teachers chattering about their vacation and wondering if there would be any changes in the school building, faculty members or students. Suddenly, they caught a glimpse of new faces, a group of neatly dressed boys and girls, reasonably good looking and frightened. Each possessing aptitudes and talents worth finding out. At this moment, we were made welcome and became the class of 1961. During our Freshman year our home room sponsors were: Mrs. M. A. Morris and Mrs. H. M. Richmond, who were very helpful and always willing to help us to become adjusted to this great institution. Our Freshman year was quite complicated and confusing because we had to get adjusted to the new rules and standards. With the coming of the next September, we received a new name. Because of our skills in acquiring the customs of the school, we were renamed Sophomores. During this year we welcomed new citizens and also a new sponsor. Mrs. G. S. Mitchell was warmly welcomed as home room sponsor of 10th grade, section Il. Mrs. E. M. Stephens sponsor of 10th Grade, section I, and Mrs. A. Lowe sponsor of 10th grade, section III. There were a total of 83 students enrolled in the sophomore class. We greeted the smiling faces of students from Phenix City Junior High School. They were: Connie Lynn, Nadine Richardson, Annie Freeman, Doretha Brewer, Margie Nelson, Betty Scott, Gloria Jones, Gladys Griffin, Lamar Lockhart, Frank Nelson, Nathanial Obel- ton, Bill Cook, Eddie Smith, Charlie Nelson, Carl Obleton, Johne Lockhart, and Thomas Cook. In the third year, owing to an old educational custom the soph- omores became juniors. We were well accustomed to our wonder- ful environment. As Juniors we were in charge of the Junior and Senior Prom, which was held at the Masonic Auditorium. The Juniors were attired in their class colors, pink and black. The waiters and waitress were excellent in their performances, The music was superbly presented by the Mello tones of Tuskegee, Alabama. Our sponsors were Mrs. E. M. Stephens, and Mrs. G. S. Mitchell. Now, we come to the fourth and greatest year in the history of the Class. We automatically became Seniors in September. With the gaining of this title, we began to take ourselves more seriously than ever before. As this year comes to close we are getting positively dizzy with dignity. Our sponsors are Mrs, E. M. Stephens and Mrs. B. S. Merriweather. The organization of the Senior Class was noteworthy, the follow- ing list of officers being in charge: President, Nathanial Obleton, Vice President, James Redd, Recording Secretary, Charlie Mae Sum- bry, Corresponding Secretary, Doretha Brewer, Financial Secretary, Mary Smith, Treasurer, Lamar Lockhart, Business Managers, Otis Abron and Carl Obleton, Sgt. -at-Arms, Roy Chester Sanks, and Chaplain, Leola Mitchell. During the period from 1957, to 1961, many great talents were discovered. There are musicians, dancers, singers, orators, and a host of others being in various categories. For instance, Mary Nell Smith has been a news commentator since her Freshman Year. Annie Dorthy Freeman was head majorette during our junior and senior Year. Our Senior football players were, Cari Obleton, Roy Chester Sanks, Anderson Chappell, Otis Abron, Bill Cook, and Robert Abercrombie. There were several Seniors who were Majorettes. They were, Theresa Davis, Doretha Brewer, Mary Nell Smith, Virginia Smith, and Annie Dorthy Freeman. Frank Nelson, Chester Sumbry and Tommy Henry, were in the band. The five additions to the Senior Class, took their roots as if they had been planted with the class which began in 1957. The new addi- tions are: Otis Abron, James Caruthers, Kary Word, Howard Williams, and Mary Mossmon. The Senior basketball players are Howard Williams and Robert Abercrombie. Our cheerleaders were: Nadine Richardson and Gladys Griffin. As the old saying goes, If you can't be the best, be among the best, and we as a whole can say we were among the best by having Nadine Richardson as an attendant in the Miss Blue Streak epithet during our Senior year. We were represented among the best again when Chester Sumbry won second prize on Talent Hunt , which was held at the Spencer Senior High School Auditorium, this was during our Junior Year. The end of the four year period is drawing near and as our motto states: We have crossed the bay, but the ocean lies ahead. We take the opportunity to say now, that in our far from humble opinion the Class of 1961, is the most brilliant, attractive, and talen ted of any class known to history and will be always remembered by the faculty of the South Girard High School and the people of the community as That wonderful class of 1961. Hlass Prvphevy By Mary Nell Smith Although it has never been publicly announced it is generally known that I possess the remarkable power of projecting myself through the years into any given time in which I am interested. Tonight, being restless and weary with the cares of the day, I longed for a change of scene and tune. So, closing my eyes and re- laxing one night with the moon shining bright, looking at the stars and wondering to myself how I wish I could predict what my fellow classmates will be doing five or even twenty years from today. Still wanting to know about the future of my classmates, all of a sudden the stars disappeared and the night was still dark. This was very strange to me because I had never seen such darkness. For awhile I was afraid it was too dark for me to move because I could not see anything. Then out of the darkness came one little star shining very bright, and with this star came a great voice, of course this frightened me because I could see no one and like a wish coming true out of no where this voice said to me, l shall grant your wish. AS THE DOORS OF HIGH SCHOOL CLOSE By Gladys Griffin It is with mingled emotion that we think of leaving South Girard High to a challenging future. Most of life is concerned with the manner in which we deal with the two-way challenges that con- fronts us. As a challenge is presented to us, we in turn present one to the people who first confronted us In school, our challenge has been presented to us by our parents and faculty members, in the forms of a program of studies and activities which we have successfully completed. We, in turn have been challenged to make the experiences worthwhile. Now, as the doors of High School close behind us, we give many thanks to all of the faculty mem- bers of South Girard High, the lessons that rhey've taught, shall always be imprinted in our minds. 60155 Elem THE ENDING By: Eddie Lewis Smith The time has come for which we strived, We are thankful for this privilege, we weren't deprived. To some of us, it's the beginning, But from high school it is the ending. May we be always yearning, To be more interested in higher learning. Igniting our ambitious dreams faithfully, Turning them into reality. The coach misses a basketball star, We miss walking down the corridor. While there we were their guest, And all of us did our best. All of us will cherish thoughts in our minds, Of golden days that lie behind. Nothing left now but a wonderful memory, Of our best days spent at S.G, Wim is' Wim in the Senirfr 611155 THE MOST INTELLECTUAL BOY AND GIRL - Iames Redd and Charlie Mae Sumbry. Hlass Song By Otis Abron Jr. Tune: fAre You Lonesome Tonighty Yes we're lonesome tonight Yes we'll miss you tonight Yes we're sorry we're drifting apart Yes our memory refrains to our brighter high school days When we met you and called you our own Yes the chairs in our classroom seem empty and bare Yes we gaze at your doorsteps and picture our- selves there Yes our hearts filled with pain for we're leav- ing tonight Oh! S.G. we're lonesome tonight You know someone said our school days are our best days Act one was September, '57, We loved you at first glance and you were so warm For we had no cause to doubt our love Act two is today you seemed to change Why it wasn't strange For we were leaving you Now the stage is bare and we are standing there with emptiness And since we are leaving you can pull the curtain down Yes our hearts filled with pain for we're leaving tonight Ohl S.
