Confronted by unfamiliar surroundings, every- thing seemed a little larger than it actually was. We were eager to make new friends and establish our- selves as part of the South Gate High School family. Ron Fountain, who was our A-9 Class President, started us off right by serving as the B-10 Grade Delegate to the Executive Council. The Howdy Hop, with Bill Child, Claudia Brack, and Carol Gold reigning as king and co-queens, started the ball rolling, socially speaking, for the Winter Class of 1959. Mr. Cecil Bianchi, our grade counselor, helped us through program planning and an exciting new game- running for classesl Ioyce Hill led us in student government as A-10 Grade Delegate as our sophomore year drew to a close. A Night in Paris was the motif of the Iunior Prom, which marked the halfway point in our high school career. Ray Kulper brought honor to the class by being selected to participate in Boys' State. Rep- resenting us in Executive Council were Pam McClain and Dale Miller. Then, class organization with the assistance of Miss Cynthia Domingo, who accepted the arduous task of being our class sponsor, com- menced before most of us realized that the senior year was just around the corner . We chose char- coal grey and powder blue as our class colors. An unusual and attractive class emblem was designed by Donna Conrad. Our senior year was initiated under the leader- ship of Dale Miller, president. His cabinet consisted of Sue Bowen, vice-president: Lorraine Clark, secre- tary: Elaine Denton, girls' treasurer: and Ioe Farrug- gia, boys' treasurer. Ian Noack was our B-12 Grade Delegate. At Irvine Park, fun was had by all who attended the first senior picnic. Other exciting activities were noon basketball and volleyball games, and Senior Play Day held with the Senior Ayes. Busy in student body government were Bill Child. Boys' Federation President: Linda Rundle, Chief Ius- tice: Marvin Cichy, Commissioner of Athletics, and Willy Capps, Head Cheerleader. In spring sports, three Senior Bees achieved All-City honors. They were Marvin Cichy, tennis: Lloyd Helm, gymnastics: and Richard Yeates, baseball. The night of Iune 7, 1958 will be remembered by all as that of the long-awaited Senior Prom. The theme was 'Grecian Gardens', and we danced to the music of the Elliot Brothers. Picturesque decora- tions portraying the atmosphere of ancient Greece added to the success of the evening at the Civic Auditorium. During the summer of 1958, Dale Miller, as a guest of the American Field Service, spent two months in Switzerland as a foreign exchange student. At last, September, 1958-we were on top! Our new Senior Aye class officers were Marvin Cichy, president: Sharon Pahel, vice-president: Carol Gold, secretary: Lorraine Clark, girls' treasurer: Ioe Far- ruggia, re-elected boys' treasurer, and Lloyd Helm, sergeant-at-arms. Activities commenced swiftly with the first fall senior class picnic, also held at Irvine Park. lt was a riot! Senior pictures were taken and exchanged. Everyone enjoyed himself at a truly successful Senior Tea on December 4. Our talent show was presented to the school on Ianuary 15. Our Class gift, four large volumes on George Washington to the high school library, was dedicated at the Senior Breakfast on Ianuary 22. The class prophecies were also read on this occasion. Bill Child made All-League during the 1958 foot- ball season. Beauty and personality were displayed by Sharon Pahel, Milk Bowl Queen: Lanette Clark, Homecoming Queen: and Claudia Brack, Miss South Gate. These Senior Ayes received special recogni- tion at the Award Assembly on Ianuary 26: Dennis Benko and Marcia McKinney, our Rotary Award winners: Dale Miller and Linda Thurston, B'nai B'rith winners: Dennis Benko, Alumni scholarship: Linda Thurston, Retired Teachers scholarship: Ron Schwart- ing, Bausch Lomb Scientific award: the 20-30 Award was given to Harold Lara: Iim Dods received an Art Award. Iohn Kinikin was honored for perfect atten- dance. Top honors at graduation went to Valedictorian, Miriam Tenn: Ephebians, Carol Ann Blake, Bill Child, Iohn Kinikin, and Dale Miller: and our C.S.F. Sealbearers. The Youth of Today ls the Hope of To- morrow , the main theme of graduation, was deliv- ered by speakers Astrid Heinrich, Dale Miller, Kay Carswell, and Linda Rundle. Climaxing our senior activities, the Grad-N ite Party was held at the Civic Auditorium under the theme, Hawaiian Luau. Roller skating and other activities provided a wonderful time for all of us. School service was the impetus of the members of the Winter class of 1959 who distinguished them- selves in their careers at South Gate: Bill Child, A.S.B. President: Iohn Kinikin, A.S.B. Vice-President: Dennis Benko, Chief Iustice: Marcia McKinney, Co- ordinator of Student Conduct: Linda Rundle, A.S.B. Historian: Dale Miller, Eastern League President: Ian Noack, Eastern League Secretary: Linda Thurs- ton, Girls' League President: Sharon Ross, Ladies' President: Mike Ireland, Knights' President: Carol Ann Blake, Pep Club President: Sue Bowen, Presi- dent of Modernettes, and Sue Bergman, RAMBLE- BACK editor. We have enjoyed our stay at South Gate High School and are somewhat reluctant to leave. How- ever, we realize that commencement is actually as the word implies-the beginning of many interest- ing careers for each of us. , LA... SR. . This was the Summer Graduation Class of 1959 consisting of more than 400 members. After being such well known A-9's, we were quite lost in this big wonderful school. We were shy and timid at first, but it didn't take us long to take part in the many activities. Weldon Mathews and Pat Kimball began the Sophomore year, reigning as King and Queen of the traditional Howdy Hop. As an introduction to the school and the things we were to expect, there was an orientation assembly for the boys and, of course, the Big-sister Party for the girls. Grade delegates for the B-10 were Burt Swart and Carol Christiansen: in the A-10 they were Betty Rumsby and Don Grussing. Our Iunior year brought about much enthusiasm for A. S. B. officers. Don Battershall and Carolyn Holden were representatives. Among the Student Body Officers were Earline Ulrich, Commissioner of Publicity: Mary Hauser, Girls League Historian. Of course, by now people had joined many of the clubs around the campus. The Iunior Prom was held under the theme of Sayonara. The field of sports, all kinds, began to be active in our Iunior year. Some of the boys who became quite well known for their contributions to sports were: Doug Bates, Vann Singleton, Iim Keller, Gene Shelton, George Miller, Danny Woodward, Dennis McDonald, Iim Lovato, Larry Giar, Burt Swart, Ken Weiland, Don Morris, Brad Van Horn, Wally Wolf, Bob Reeves, and Bill Mathews. Choosing Senior Colors was quite a task, but after much deliberation, we decided on Green and White. We finally began to feel the excitement of the Senior Year commencing. Soon class rings, pins, and sweaters were arriving. We were very proud to wear all of these insignias of the Summer Graduation Class of 1959. Our Senior Bee year was the beginning of a lot of hard work, and at the same time, much pleasure. A beach party, picnic, and noon activities such as volley- ball games and tug-o-wars, began to show our rivalry for the Senior Ayes. Class Officers for Senior Bee year were Frank Cassidy, President: Don Battershall, Vice President: Marianne Mandeville, Secretary: Mary Grosso, Girls' Treasurer: and Dave Hill, Boys' Treasurer. Those who took part in A. S. B. Officers were Mary Hauser, Secretary: Barbara Elias, Commissioner of Publicity: Eurlene Ulrich, Commissioner of Assemblies: Phil Francis, Commissioner of Finance: and Gene Shelton, Boys' Federation President. Cheerleaders were Pat Kimball, Pat Bogan, Carol Holden, and Betty Rumsby, and lim Baker. Songleaders were Sunnie Stevenson and Martha Rowe. February brought about a change of heart in all Senior Bees. This was of course, being promoted to Senior Ayes. Officers elected were Nan McCoid, President: lim Loavto, Vice President: Pat Kimball, Secretaryp Treasurers, Pat Bogan, Don Battershaw, and Linda Reed, Historian. Among Senior activities were the tug-O-wars, clash day, volleyball games, beach party, talent show, picnics, hay rides, play day, safety car check, and others. Many of these activi- ties were held in conjunction with the Senior Ayes. Those who distinguished themselves by holding offices were Gene Shelton, President: Dennis McDonald, Vice President: Marianne Mandeville, Secretary: Bob Macali, Chief Iusticey Linda Iones, co-ordinator of student conduct: Betty Rumsby, commissioner of assemblies: Barbara Elias, Commissioner of Publicity: Bob Reeves, Commis- sioner of Finance: Iudy Parr, Historian, Lee Ann Iohnson, Head Cheerleader: Mary Hauser, Girls' League President: Wally Wolf, Rambler Editor, Carol Holden, Girls' League Secretary: Martha Rowe, Girls' League Historian: Carol Everett and Terry Wilkes Grade representatives. For the first time at South Gate High there were Princesses and a Queen reign- ing over our first night track meet of the season. Pat Kimball and Linda Reed were elected Senior Princesses while Martha Rowe was elected Queen. SR. B CLASS CDFFICERS 3' SR. A CLASS Le!! io Right: Don Baiiershall. Boys' Treasurer: Pat Boqan. Bas- ketball provided some spine-tingling moments, finishing second in the Eastern League race, and advancing to the city quarter-finals. In the spring, baseball- fever caught on, and the South Gate horsehiders responded with a 3-1 pre-season record and a 3-0 Eastern League record as we go to press. Coach Barkham Garner in his 29th year at the helm of the track squad, had a 3-3 overall record, and the SG strongmen were the dark horses in the city's most powerful gym- nastic loop. Looking back on the school sports calendar as they came, it was Coach Ioe Seminario's first losing season in eight years at South Gate, winding up the campaign in fourth place with a 2-3 League mark and a 3-5 season record. While not a happy gridiron year, the naming of Doug Bates to the 3rd team all-city tackle position, Bill Child's Eastern League nomination, and Vann Singleton's 2nd team all league award soothed some of the pain. Bates, a 223 pound mountain and Child's a 165 pound guard Co-captained the '58 aggregation, while to scat-back Singleton it was old business to be named on league teams. Offensively speaking, Singleton copped the team rush- ing title for the second straight year, gaining 465 yards for a better than 4.5 yards per carry, and T-master Ed Maldonado lead the squad in total offense with his dead- ly aerials. Giving solace to Seminario and Coach Bob Clark were the performances of juniors Larry Sandel, Iohn' Daniels, Ron Ogle, Ron Smith, Iirn Ortiz, Ioe Monti, and lim Neighbors. Biggest thrill of the pigskin year didn't occur till the finale against Bell. Trailing 7-6 with only 17 seconds re- maining on the clock and the year, Maldanado unloaded a 29 yard pass which Singleton hauled in for victory 12-7. Wilson and Huntington Park dominated the league with the Spartans ending up on top. The Mules Mitch Dimkich was named Eastern League player of the year, while HP's Larry Campbell set a new city single game rushing mark against South Gate. Coach Ditto and Bob Schnyder fielded the top 'B' team in the past five years, but could garner only a fourth place in league competition. Iirn Travis, Dan Harrison, Mike Hinnen, Lorah, and Travis received league awards for their efforts. The round ball sport, basketball, came up with some of the most exciting moments of the year. The Rams dropped the final game of the Eastern League season to Bell, to finish second. Mike Ireland, George Miller, Marvin Cichy, and Rich Yeates were the big guns for Coach Garvin Barnes. Overall, SG posted an ll-5 record, good enough to reach the city quarter finals and the league runner-up position. Ireland, Miller, and Cichy each received all- league consideration, Ireland to the first team and the latter pair to second team positions. For Cichy, it marked the third time in his high school career that he was named to an all-league basketball team. 8 One stumbling block which popped up twice stopped South Gate from taking the crown. Roosevelt twice over- threw the Rams, taking both tilts by three points. Ireland stole the season spotlight in the opening round 84 of the city playoffs at Venice. With four ticks left, he cast off from 35 feet and hit to bring SG a 47-45 victory over Narbonne. University defeated SG in the quarter-finals, but not before, major underdogs South Gate, had given them ot third quarter scare. IV hoopmen faired the same way as the varsity, drop- ping the season finale to Bell, thus losing the champion- ship. Dwayne George, Iohn Parrot, Dwayne Vendes, and Ioe Quintana sparkled for Coach Don Guynn. Called a team of destiny the IV five won seven out of eight games by one or two points, and in each instance, the winning basket was held back till the final three or four seconds. Tenth grader Nelson Brown was the whole cross-coun- try story, leading the leatherlungers to fourth place in the standings behind Roosevelt, Garfield, and Wilson. How- ard Ash, Dennis McDonald, Dan Woodard, and Dennis Rietzel composed the nucleus of the varsity team. Defending Eastern League champs and a 3rd place Dorsey Tournament finish to live up too, South Gate's varsity baseballers, launched a successful practice sea- son, defeating Iordan, Franklin, and Belmont, losing only to Pius X 2-0. Favored to take two in a row, Coach Cliff Ditto's contingent scored successive wins over Wilson, Roosevelt and Huntington Park in the league openers. F rank Den Hartog posted a 4-0 record thus far. The ace of the staff with Brad Van Horn on the sidelines, Hartog came through with top notch performances. A 2nd team all-city member, Van Horn was hors de combat for the first part of the year due to shoulder ailments, but his big bat was felt by the opposition. Larry Sandel, Wally Wolf, and Doug Bates were boom- ing the ball at a better than .300 pace as the season progresses with all three up for league honors. Hunting- ton Park was the surprise nine, and Garfield the big con- tender. lust a mediocre year on the varsity level, the 'C' team was the best South Gate has ever produced. Running in the middle of the pack, the varsity squad had a quartet of top notch performers in Dennis McDonald, Bill Mat- thews, Dan Woodard, and LeRoy Hopper. Matthews tied the school 180 yard low hurdles mark twice, while McDonald was only two seconds off the school mile standard with three meets to come. Woodard and Hopper loom up as possible Eastern League medal contenders, being solid performers all through the season. 'C' prospects were bright for the first time in years with sprinters Preston Dollar and Ron Govreau breaking rec- ords, Bill Sheue standing out in the 660 and George Guc- cione breaking the school 120 low hurdle mark. Schoolfrecords fell like flies in the 'C' division. For example, Ron Govreau cracked the 180 mark on three occasions, driving it down to 18.7, which is better than the existing Eastern League record and one of the tops in the city: George Guccione tied the school 120 lows record in his second attempt at the sticks: Dollar's 10.5 100 best is one of the top marks in the city: Dollar and Govreau team together in the field events, Dollar the shot put and Govreau the broad lump. The admission of Wilson into the league gives the Eastern loop the tops circuit in city circles. Perennial toughies Roosevelt, Garfield, and Huntington Park along with Wilson made it tough. Bob Reeves, third in the city free-ex in '58, looks like city material again. Gene Shelton, rings, Larry Gaier, rope, and Iim Lovato, long horse, lead the gym enthusiasts as the season began. Highlight of the season, was the naming of four members of the '58 squad to the all- Eastern League team. Honored by the East- ern loop coaches were Dennis Evenson, cen- ter: lim Travis, quarterback, Fred Lorah, halfbackg and Fred Hinnen, tackle. Evenson drew the top honor of the quartet, nailing down a first team center berth with his aggressive play. Evenson is labeled for plenty of varsity action in the Seminario system in 'b9.
