One of our first distinctions was that we were the largest winter class to come to South Gate High. Our advisors, who have been so helpful during our three years at South Gate, have been, Miss Caroline Hardick, Mrs. Alice Mills, Mrs. Pat Rawald and Mr. Morton Tenner. Mr. Robert Clark was our sponsor and Mr. William Hopkins was our counselor. During our sophomore semesters we were busy getting acquainted with new people, a new school, and different studies. Joining clubs and becoming a valuable part of the student body was one of our main aims. Our iunior year arrived, and we began to plan our iunior prom, which was a lot of fun and turned out to be very beautiful. One of the most exciting things in our iunior year was the preparation for the transfer into the senior status. We voted on our colors, and after much deliberation we chose yellow and charcoal. Loads of homework and midnight oil helped us achieve the honored status of seniors and only one year of our high school career remained for us. We elected our Senior Bee officers who were: Randy Edwards, president, John Schroeder, vice-president, Sylvia Tiscareno, secretary, Shirley Bracey, girls' treasurer, and Doug Pearson, boys' treasurer. We also chose the name Acerians for our class. Our sweaters, rings and pins had arrived, and we were busy letting the Senior Ayes know that we weren't far behind them. At last the most important social event of our senior year arrived, our senior prom. The theme was. The Tales of the Arabian Nights. The civic was enhanced by a huge fountain which spilled colored water. A mystic aura was imparted by lovely hanging tapestries. lt was really a night never to be forgotten. Early in September our homerooms were changed to the auditorium, a sure sign that we were full-fledged senior ayes. Our pictures were taken soon after by the Chris Myron studios. South Gate's biggest year in athletics was our senior year. We won the City Cham- pionship in football. These boys in our class were on the Varsity team, Bob Hivner and Rod Cochran, co-captains, Gary Brusca, Buddy Burgess, Ray Dunn, Norm Ecken- rode, Randy Edwards, Harold Humphrey, Sparky Jones, Dave Koretoff, Joe Labriente, Doug Pearson, and Phil Tourville. Our basketball team tied for the League Champion- ship. Fred Engels, Art Alviso and Jim Taylor were captain and team members, respectively. The Senior Tea was enioyed November 16, 1955, and our Senior Breakfast was held January 26, 1956, which heralded the close of high school years. One of the closing events was the Award Assembly, which was a highlight in many senior lives. The 20-30 award was given to Rod Cochran. Bob Fernandez, and Loretta Madison, were the recipients of the B'na B'rith award for the most outstanding boy and girl of the senior class. To Bob Fernald and Marsha Caddell went the service above self award, the Rotary award. The Firestone Award was given to Ed Oreman. The Ephebians were announced to be Dick Houskeeper, Sandra Little, Cora-Lynn Hill, and Art Alviso. The night of January 27, 1956, was the most important time in our lives, thus far, for it was our graduation night. The Ladder of Life was our theme, and it was carried out by Robert Fernandez, Sonia Haas, Julienne Rout, Sandra Little, and Berkley Maughan, graduation speakers. Our senior class officers were Lonnie Spencer, president, Art Alviso, vice-president, Barbara Sanders, secretary, and Mary Cattanach and Bob Hivner, treasurers. Members of the Class of W'56 who distinguished themselves are Gary Brusca, ASB president, Doug Pearson, ASB vice-president, Bob Fernald, commissioner of athletics, Ed Oreman, commissioner of assemblies, Darlene Newman, Girls' League president, Art Lopez, Boys' Federation president, Dick Houskeeper, Knight's president, Sandra Little, Ladies' president, and Sylvia Tiscareno, football queen. We had many good times at South Gate High School, and we will never forget our high school career. Afvhuy Ammo D il To be Succcssiw ' Kmgms , j SP X22 ' B! A 1, sw 5 . fe vw. Q SG vs Roosevelt 20-I3 SOUTH GATE vs NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Still, after our team licked Manual Arts fair and square, the Sports critics hung on to their ratings, as would a child, insisting that 2 and 2 Equal 5. So on we went into the Coliseum, underdogs by I4 points. This time it seemed as though the critics were correct. They were already saying I told you so as the Huskies began their march towards our goal line. But as the game progressed, everyone found that the Huskies were attempting to penetrate an invincible wall. Charging - passing - nearly everything in the books was tried by the Huskies. Again and again they crossed our 20 yard line with a fierce determination. lt seemed as though the inevitable would occur, but we held tight. Then history was made. Everyone will remember the spectacular run by Buddy Burgess and the Hivner to Pearson pass into the end zone. The conversion was good, and the score was 7-0. ni1 ' M A . , ' . , dPfY-F z P E , 4 N4 SG vs HP l2-6 .1-.,.?,.,, SG vs Washington 7-i4 M Nl tl A 15- 1 .tiff 'I 'ff .s. wc. Accomplishments The Ram Varsity team started off their sea- son well, easily defeating Downey, Nar- bonne, and Gardena High Schools. It was no wonder, for finally Coach Garvin Barnes had accumulated an outstanding team, one made up mostly of seniors, with one exceptionally great iunior. As the league games began, the Ram five ran down both HP and Garfield. The strong Bell team, surprised the Ramblers and crushed them to the ground. Still limp, both mentally and physically from the Bell beat- ing, they were upset by the Vikings of Riis who were spirited by Ed Zeter and Johnson. Something happened, or someone changed, for as they met their next op- ponents, Roosevelt, they swept over them. Yes, the Ram five went on through the second round completely undefeated. High point man for the Rams was Earl Shultz, scoring an average of 23 points per game. Consequently, Shultz made the third-string All-City team. Accomplishments: The Cross Country team of l955, although it didn't take the League Champion- ship, can say that it had a better than average season. In league competition, both of our cross-town rivals lH.,P. 81 Belll were trounced under the trodding heels of the Ram team., Until they met Garfield, the two year city-champs, the yet undefeated Rams, were set back on their heels. Still determined, they were now aiming for second place. Finally came the show- down. The Rams were tied for second place with the Roughriders of Roosevelt. The Roughriders held tight, and dropped the discour- aged Rams. This year Henry Mayhew broke the Varsity Cross Country record of 9:35 set by John Aldinger in '54. Mayhew's time was 9:26, he broke it in the Bell meet. ln the same meet Bill DeRanek also broke the record with 9:33. DeRanek holds tenth record of 9:39. 88 Don Wyatt, Bill Stoner, Larry Reves, Jim Welsh, Bill Hartman, Captain Joe Dyson, and Bob Smith. l Varsity 81 Tenth fade Cross Country - - The Tenth Grade team did very well con- sidering the tough league into which South Gate was switched. The reason the Eastern League is considered the toughest City league is because in it are two schools that have been consistently taking one of the first five places in the city for years. The sophomore team did well in that it beat Huntington Park, Bell, la feat we accomplished every yearl and came very close to beating Garfield. Outstanding men on the team were Bill Hartman, and Don Wyatt. Bill ran 9:45 at East L. A., almost breaking the lOth-Grade record. Don Wyatt originally from Lyn- wood High, took fifth in the league. Both Bill and Don made Varsity Letters. Next year the Varsity team will have five returning Lettermen, they are: Leonard Armendariz, Bob Smith, Jerry Potts, Bill Hartman, and Don Wyatt. The former three are Seniors, while the latter two are Juniors. The team will have a strong chance in League contention. tame I have been Iavang in dafferent places in west Germany Finally we arrived an Hagen Westphalia where my dad has a iob an a bag electricity company I attended hagh school there together with my brother Then one day an October of 1954 I heard about the exchange student program that was goang on with the United States My English teacher encouraged me to try out for the program After quate a few interviews and preparataan meetangs and also a bag physical check ua I was told that I h United States for one year of study I was very happy about that because I always wanted to go to the U.S. I was even happier to find out that the place that I would go to in America was sunny California. So, on July 19, 1955, I left Bremenhaven in Germany. After a wonderful boat trip and an exciting flight from on August 3. I was picked up by my new family at the airport and have had a very wonderful time together with them. Then school started and there is no doubt that South Gate High is the best sch'ool I have gone to. I have met so many nice boys and girls and studied some very interesting subjects. I would like to thank everyone who has been so nice to me teachers and students. Thanks to you this school year in the United States will always be one of my finest memories. ad been chosen to go to the New York to Los Angeles, I arrived here I was barn on August 9, 1939 in Vienna Austria. My father is a chemical engineer and my mother is busy keeping the household. I went to a private catholic girls' school in Vienna, and my brother who is 13, goes to a private boys' school. Sports, like swimming ice-skating, and skiing reading and photography are my hobbies. Music and dancing are among my favorites. I have always liked to travel and so when I learned about the American Field Service program, I was very enthusiastic to have a chance to go to the United States which is quite a trip from Austria. I would like to become an interpreter and this trip completes my English knowledge. After submitting my application in December 1954 I received word in June 1955 that my scholarship would take me to South Gate, Califor- nia for one year to live with Mr. and Mrs. Scoles and their three small daughters. The last days at school and home were very exciting. Quite a few things had to be done like getting my visa for the U.S. First I went with my parents for a vacation to Italy and then left Vienna in the end of July for America. l had a lot of fun during this trip with about 230 other students on our boat, After spending 2 wonderful days in New York, I flew to Burbank where I met my family. For once I was really anxious for school to start because I wanted to meet all the students and see what school would be like in America. I found they really are quite different from ours in Austria. I especially like the social activities here, and I will miss them when I get home since our school has no clubs. However, at home, one of our important social activities is dancing school which everyone attends. At the end of the year a formal dance is held which is a big success. I think that almost every girl and boy in Austria would like to travel to the U.S. to see what it is really like. My stay here in a private family is truly the most wonderful way to see inside America and her people. One never would have a chance to do this just by being a tourist, I have met so many friends and nice people here who have made me feel welcome and happy. I enioy doing the same things you do, and at the same time I am learning about your country. With this learning I hope I can help my friends back home understand the American people a little bit better, I would like to thank, also, all you students and teachers of South Gate High for helping to make my stay here so pleasant and wonderful. During my first days here before school had started for the year some girls advised me to always say that South Gate High is the best in the city - and now I know why. 1 Row 1, Left to Right: D.
