Hard work was the order of the day and all too soon the green Cougar team faced Shelley in the opener. Andrasen blocked a kick which Rudd converted into a touchdown. Litton plunged to a T. D. in the second, but in the meantime, Shelley racked up 27 points and the ball game. The following week Ham- mond and Rudd matched three North Fremont T.D.'s and the Cougars won by virtue of two extra points. Madison capitalized on one had quarter to win by a three touch- down margin. Litton and Allgood scored for the Cougars. The following week a surprisingly stubborn Firth Club forced the Cougars to settle for a 13-13 tie. Salmon surprised by upsetting the favored South Fremont team 13-6. The Cougars closed out the season with a 22-7 win over Bonneville- Three wins, three losses, and one tie went into the record book. With the football season over our athletes turned their attention to basketball. Without a tall man to send down the middle and to play the boards, Coach Mecham turned to the only alternative, good ball handling and ball control. The squad turned in victories over Arco, Salmon, South Cache, and Shelley before dropping a non- conference game to North Fremont. The Cougars bounced back to win eleven of their remaining 14- games. Only Madison defeated them in conference play. In the 6th district tourney the Cougars lost only to Madison winning second place and a State Tournament Berth. In State play they won over Sandpoint, lost to Burley, defeated Caldwell and lost in their final game to Jerome 48-16. Including tournament play the Cougars won 20 and lost 8. The Jay Vees won 17 of 19 games which speaks well for the varsity prospects for next year. 60 A' K '2ffffs1fzffffzfiff:'h . ! : I . :gh na..-..vp!3gQ.?.g. ,fggffsffffgf M. ' f 'sf fain . fa.. ASEBALL SQUA Spring was slow getting here in 1957 but when it finally arrived South Fremont athletes were ready for the spring sports. Coach Ben Jordan turned his efforts toward track. The squad participated in the Ricks College invitational and the District Six Meet. Eight boys earned track letters. Coaches Mecham and Harding began daily workouts with the haseball team. The team lacked depth hut had a strong starting lineup. The team served notice that they had their sights set on the District championship hy winning over the North Fremont Huskies 4-3. Sugar and Madison put a temporary damper on the Cougars hopes hy winning 5 -4 and 6 - 3 hut subsequent wins over Teton. North Fremont. Madi- son. and Sugar City brought South Fremont to the championship game with Idaho Falls. The issue was in doubt until the last man was out in the final inning. The Cougars finished on top 5--4 to win the game. the District Championship and another trophy. 67 s? :- .ai-Hui, .aff-'mz:z'gg, .- . .Q ,' . n -- .z..gga--g.--, we. .. .. This year as the Tattler goes to press three of South Fremontas seniors have maintained perfect atten- dance throughout their high school career. This is a notable accomplishment and we extend our congratulations to Jean, Jerry, and Randall. This year the overall attendance at South Fremont has been exceptionally good. Seventy-five students have maintained perfect attendance to date. The group pictured below include student leaders in practically every school activi- ty. We commend them for their efforts and we hope the remaining weeks of school will not materially reduce their number. This team, composed of average sized boys faced a height disadvantage in practically every game. Their fine record is the direct result of good coaching and hard work. Good ball handling and deadly accuracy from the foul line kept them in contention with teams having superior physical assets. VV Mariam FXXJFE SI1, 5N I IA' T Advey-5,8 XDXQY' G QP ,gem A Q KLM?
