ConlurMan l I Barbara Allen A witch boy from the mountain came, a pinin' to be human-for he had seen the fairest gal, a gal named Barbara Allen. Taken from the folk song version of the legend of Barbara Allen, Dark of Mrs. Allen the Moon told the haunting story of John the witch boys love for the blue-eyed mountain girl, Barbara Allen. Against a background of fundamentalist Christianity and age-old superstition, John and Barbaras love stands out simply and tragically. The fear of witches which grips the townspeople makes them force Barbara to be untrue to her husband and by so doing condemn him to 300 years as a witch and then ' iust a mountain fog. Directed and acted with sincerity and sensitivity, Dark of the Moon dealt with the earthy Christianity of the southern mountain people in an adult manner which brought praise from the school and community. The play was performed on a setting of 60 levels which extended completely across the orchestra pit. Playing the musical score by Ford Foundation composer-in-residence Karl Kroeger, the orchestra was seated in the balcony. Subdued lighting and the eerie cries of the witches emphasized the complexity of John s two worlds, supernatural and real. As Souths second dramatic presentation of the year, Dark of the Moon, staged February 4 and 5, drew the first sell-out audiences for a non-musical show. The audience, and cast of 115, largest ever involved in a drama, were thrilled by the appearance of playwright Howard Richardson for the closing performance. Mr, Richardson, a resident of New York, found the South Eugene production of his play, One of the best l've ever seen.
