HOMECOMING '65 Axemen A Go-Go! A roaring bonfire and the crowning of the i965 Homecoming court sparked the beginning of three activity-filled days of color and excitement in No- vember. The soaring flames of the leaping bonfire drew Axemen together to see radiant Patty Bowles crowned queen of the onceeevery-three-years event, Yells were chanted, songs were sung, and spirits rose as the myriad of gala events of Home- coming '65 began. A sunny fall afternoon invited crowds onto the streets of downtown Eugene to see a caravan of floats, bands, and cars to the theme of Axemen A Go-Go serpentine along the chosen parade route. t-its LANDERS Co-captain Gary Pape at bonfire, Led by pretty Miss Oregon, Sue Pack, o '65 South grad, the seemingly endless line of entries ranging from the cooks recipe for filbert stew to the A Cappellas enthusiastic singing brought stares, smiles, and applause. l-ligh-spirited Axemen filled the stadium Friday evening to see the Civil War with Crosstown rival North Eugene. Pep Club ushered in the football team by forming a line for the players to run through onto the field to begin their struggle with the Highlanders. Before a screaming crowd of en- thusiastic fans, the game came to a disappointing end, lf?-7 in Norths favor.

Exuberant Homecoming court is introduced at Willamette game. From leftz Marcia Molter, Thera Smith, Patty , , . , i, d Bowles, Carol Bryant Morello, Lynn Molter and Delyn Dark. Junior princess Hilda Bengtson was hospita ize when photo was taken but was able to participate in Homecoming activities. Edgar Goodnough, South teacher for 30 years, addresses alums at breakfast. continued Halfetime entertainment included the marching band and maiorettes, the dancing Synchronettes, and the announcement of the parade float winners. Most Humorous Float went to Medical Careers tor their after the battle' scene typifying the situation after the North-South game. Best Class Float went to the seniors for their Leaders of Tomorrow theme with a huge mortar board and scroll. Most Original Float honor was awarded to the sopho- mores for their Famous Axemenh showing George Washington chopping down a filbert tree. A Cap- pella choir won Best All-Around for the theme, Stately She Stands, with members singing the alma mater throughout the entire parade route. The football loss did not dampen the Homecoming spirit as shawn by the ll? people who turned out for the hearty alumni breakfast the next morning, Axemen, old and new, gathered to hear Edgar Goodnough speak on Old Times at Eugene High, listen to the Madrigols, and to renew memories ot high school days. Tired but happy Axemen who had worked on Homecoming '65 for months saw it draw to a fitting close Saturday night at Her Memory Lingersf' the Homecoming dance. Subdued lighting, romantic couples, and soft music provided an atmosphere of relaxation and recollection of those fun-filled days. 74
