Cast sings Wave flags and shoot off flares as Harry finds his perfect woman, FALL COMEDY Money ls Everything I'rn incredibly wealthy, the son and heir to the oldest nouveauerich family on the Eastern Sea- board. I was born with a silver spoon, a New York town house, and summers on the Riviera in my mouth, said l-larry Clay as he opened South Eu- genes first play of the 1965-1966 season, Money, This riotous story of a rich mans need for a cause played to the largest audiences for a comedy in Souths history. l-larry's perfect woman refused to marry him until he had a purpose in life. As the cast rornped from industrial factory to charitable institu- tion to the San Fernando Valley, he began to wonder if he would ever find this purpose. After his long and frustrating search, she decides his money is enough and they live happily ever after. Director Edward Ragozzino changed Money,' originally a cabaret show, into a full scale produc- tion by adding a chorus to the fouremember cast From beginning to end Money was full of inno- vations. Characters entered down the center aisle after the audience was seated. The unique curtain was made entirely of plastic clothing bags in strips and tied together to extend the length and height of the stage. A special band, in costume, played music that was challenging, longer, and more difficult than the score for last springs hit production of The Sound of Music. From the moment the playgoer saw the dollar bill bow ties on the doormen in the lobby to the final song, Who Wants to Work? , the exciting spirit traditionally generated by South Eugene produc- tions was present in Money,M so much so, in fact, that the cast was invited to repeat the success at the 1966 Northwest Drama Conference, held on the University of Oregon campus in February.
