As a nevv service project this year, 64 girls vvorlfed in the Children s Recreational Roorn at Sacred I-leart Hospital, organizing games. Among the traditional activities ettectrvely executed were the Brglrttle Sister' Picnic, the Doernbecher Tea and the FcrtherfDaughter' Banquet. The league also sponsored Print and Cord Week rn April to vvelconte the spring season vvrth its rrtany activities. Throughout the year' the league selected a Girl ot the Month rn recognition ot her leadership, service and academic achievement, In June ten other girls vvere selected as V.l.G. s very rniportant girls and a scholarship was presented to Becky Hemphill and Marti Wrthrovv. President Becky l-lenwphrll, also Oregon State Girls League president, presided at the state convention held at South Eugene May i3-ll, Contnfrrttees vvorked all year planning the program and making arrange- ments tor the banauet and overnight tacrlrtres tor' the 900 girls vvho attended. During the trrst vveek ot school, Axernen s Council served as the otlrcral vvelcornrng committee as rt planned and carried out the actrvrtres ot ' l-lello Weekf Other' functions included the Christmas dance, 'Yuletrde Glide or Last Chance Dancef the Father'-Son Banquet, and the Axehandle, student directory. Taking care of all office business, transcripts, and student records vvas only part at the iob ofthe secretaries. Operating the switchboard and answering an average of T00 telephone calls a day, they played a vital roll in effective communications throughout the school. Among other duties, the custodial crew waxed over three miles of hallway three times a year, washed l3,376 window panes, and kept the 40-acre campus shipshape. The cafeteria staff served 1,050 students every day and found that any meat and gravy combination was the most popular dish. Among other foods served daily were T00 pounds of hamburger, 70 pounds of flour for baked goods, and 800 cartons of milk. The eleven bus drivers transported 774 students to and from school as well as to out-ot-town games. Mrs. June Ketel, school nurse, who aver- aged 35 patients a day, maintained detailed health records on each student. Marlin Withrow, president of the Parent Teacher Association, pre- sided at all ot the organizations functions in- cluding the three class desserts, Elwood Violette, head custodian straightens tables before second lunch
