RETIRING TEACHERS Abby Adams Anticipating days of leisure vvhen she can do the things she hasnt had time for is Miss Abby Adams, head of the foreign lan- guage department, who retired in June. Miss Adams taught 441 years, first at the old University High School, then moving to South Eugene when the tvvo schools were consolidated. Traveling is one of her fa- vorite activities. She has visited Europe, Mexico, Central and South America. She was the vvinner of one of the first Ford Foundation grants vvhich enabled her to study in this country and in Europe. Miss Adams is pleased yvith the way the class- room situation has become more relaxed over the years. Instructors no longer try to pour knowledge into their pupils, but place emphasis on helping students to think for themselves, Russell Hendricks A vvarm-hearted man who made history come alive for thousands of students in the course of his Zoryear career is Russell Hen- dricks, vvho retired in June. All of his teaching years vvere spent at the old Eu- gene High School and at South Eugene. Unfortunately, Mr. Hendricks did not spend his last year in the classroom. Just before school opened in the fall, he undervvent neurosurgery, remained at Sacred Heart Hospital until January, and then vvas transferred home for recovery, ln the spring, he enjoyed calls from faculty members and students. A particular high- light vvas a visit from the Madrigal Singers. ln appreciation of his years of dedicated teaching, the student body presented a check to Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks for Sol5.9O, part of the annual Charity Drive proceeds, to help vvith medical expenses. The contributions of this conscientious man to education will long be remembered. Miss Abby Adams Russell Hendricks
