BUSINESS EDUCATION The IBM Boom To keep up with the increasing use ot IBM equipment, a one-semester course in Data Processing vvas initiated this year. Admittonce depended upon a satisfactory score on a special aptitude test, and reasonable typing skill. Regular business education classes vvere also oftered under the direction ot George Petersen, de- partment head Nine students participated in the Business lndustry Seminar held April 23 in Portland. Guest speaker tor the event was Tom McCall, secretary ot state and candidate for governor, who discussed the present and tuture development ot the region s important corpora- tions. Delegates to the National Distributive Education Club ot America conterence in Chicago held April 27-30 vvere Jim Halford, Carolyn Peterson and Debi virtue. With the cooperation of local business tirms, Distributive Education students attended classes in the morning and worked in the afternoons tor academic credit, supervised by Mrs, Alice Bornhart. HOME ECONOMICS Jams and Jellies Smartly tailored suits, wild printed surfer iams, tangy sauces, tasty recipes and remodeled furniture were all products of the home economics department. Classes in sewing, cooking, and home furnishings, under the supervision of Mrs. Betty VVormington and Mrs. Anne Morris, allowed girls to make their own clothing, purchase and prepare foods, and refinish and re-upholster furni- ture. In the spring, approximately lOO girls traveled to Oregon State University in Corvallis to visit the home economics department to better acquaint them with the department facilities and opportu- nities for the future. Tip Toe Through the Tulips was the colorful Dutch theme forthe spring style show held May iQ. Seventy-five girls modeled outfits from bathing suits to forrnals. Nancy Ruch, outstanding home economics girl, received a sterling silver place setting. Certificates for the best dress, suit-coat, and formal were won by Trudy Johnson, Sally Bay and Linda Christensen, respectively. 45 so
