According to Dr. Dirk Ten Brinke, de- partment head, More changes have been made in the last tive years than in the previous twenty- tivef' Equipment such as carts with roller skate wheels as well as books were part ot the new programs which bore such unwieldy titles as Biological Science Curriculum Study Biology and Physical Science Study Committee Physics. ln- creased emphasis was given student observations and experimentation rather than memorization. Close coordination ot class and laboratory work with tield trips gave the students opportunities to develop important concepts. Information was presented in a way that allowed students to use experimentation and graphical analysis as methods ot learning. Results ot experiments were used by students to draw suitable conclusions, which were revised and examined in class dis- cussions. New approaches were designed to give students more tirst hand experience with the variety of techniques utilized in science. DRIVER EDUCATION Defensive Tactics Started eight years ago at South, the driver educaf tion program aims to teach students techniques of sate driving to reduce the number ot accidents. Department head Delbert Edwards, Dave Powell and Tom Means instructed 264 students during the year. Upon successful completion of the semester course, lower insurance rates were available to students. Areas covered in lectures included the history ot the car and its parts, law enforcement, trottic violations and car maintenance. An Oldsmobile F-85, and a Ford Galaxie were used, courtesy ot Dunham Mo- tors and Kendall Ford. 36
