Benedict Kiely, noted writer from Dub, Mrs, Jackie Bonner checks for diction of student speeches taped in senior English class. lin, Ireland, speaks to creative writing ENGLISH Syntax with Style From Speech to Stagecraft, the English department, directed by Dr. Raymond Kehl, offered a wide variety of courses in addition tothe required units. Working toward the goal of teaching students to use English capaloly, teachers placed emphasis on self-expression with attention to techniques of good writing. Proiect English, developed at the University of Oregon and introduced to South last year, was planned to help each student become competent in English, To accomplish this, units in literature, rhetoric, and transformational grammar were taught, Proiect English will be increased in scope next year, vvith classes for iuniors and seniors as vvell as sophomores, Classes in Drama, Debate, Creative Writing, Journalism, Develop- mental Reading, and Humanities enriched the regular curricular offerings. 24 class. -...,

were Strings, Symbols, ond Songs Pleasing sounds and a variety of performances came from the music department this year, under the direction of Robert Moblo, Nathan Cammack and Elbert Morton. A Cappella Choir gave its first performance at the Flag Day Assembly in early September. ln addition to singing at the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies, the choir provided entertainment at the charity banquet for the United Appeal drive during December at the YMCA. The girls' choir sang at the Thanksgiving assembly as vvell as the spring concert. Madrigals, a group of sixteen, sang songs mainly from the Elizabethan period. Members vvore nevv costumes character- istic of that era vvhen they performed for various community organizations. The orchestra, along vvith the A Cappella Choir, presented the entire 'Messiah' at the Christmas Concert on December 22. Music for Souths dramatic production, 'Dark of the Moon, and for the spring musical, Oliver, was provided by the full orchestra. Junior and senior band, pep band, and the stage band, knovvn as the Axe-i-dents, entertained at various functions including football and basketball games, the Opus in Color concert, and their spring performance, 'Concert on the Green. In January the band, orchestra, and A Cappella toured Spencer Butte, Roosevelt, and Wilson iunior high schools.
