Dear' Reader: The typewriters have at last stop- ped clattering and the final pages are ready to be mailed, marking the end of the 1966 Eugeneans production. Our experience is over, what hopefully remains is yourenioyment. Beginning the year, we faced a problem of epic proportions- transmuting the four' dimensions of life at South Eugene into two- dimensional paper' and ink. Our' idealization of this task, however, did not hold up against reality. Continually meeting frustrations, along with successes, our initial concepts and aspirations were forced to be repeatedly compro- mised. Eventually the creation we had vaguely envisioned took shape, but in a manner much different than expected. Even our best laid plans seldom developed quite as we had hoped, More than simply recording in an historical manner the procession of events, we attempted to re-create the atmosphere that made this year completely unlike any other. Blank paper and unexposed film has been filled with the spirit that pervaded South and in this book that spirit is preserved so that we may not forget . .. All of us became inextricably in- volved in our work and, in this respect, the book is already a suc- cess. lf our own personal preoc- cupation with the ideas and emo- tions vve tried to express is any measure of the worth of the i966 Eugenean, then you will always remember this year. We may feel some regret for our not infrequent inadequacies, but all of us are pleased with these pages and are sure you will be also.
