BASEBALL Problem on the Mound With only two starting pitchers, Coach Bob Kane had to call on inexperienced boys to carry out the hurling chores for the Axernen hardballers this year This lack of pitching prowess coupled with errors at unfortunate times enabled the team to win only four games in league competition. After compiling a 11-l pre-season record, it looked as though the team might finish high in league standings. But the Axemen gained only one victory in the first seven games. The boys completed the season in strong fashion, however, winning three out of the last five games for an overall league record of tour wins and eight losses. l-lighpoint of the season was the 4-3 win over North Eugene in the third game ofthe season, ln the fourth inning Steve Parker tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Bob Main. Cofaptain Jeff Brown singled and was driven home by Mike Johnson with another triple. North scored three runs in the next two innings, but the Axernen came from behind with Greg Fredricks scoring and pitcher Randy Snyder winning his own garne by driving in thetwinning run with a double. Several boys attained high honors during the season. Mike Johnson was named to the AlleDistrict First Team as third baseman. Jeff Brown was the leading hitter in the league with a,11T9 batting average, and was placed at first base on the All-District Second Tearn. Bob Main ioined the AlleDistrict Second Team as shortstop.
