WRESTLING Hcimmerlock on Success Axemen wrestlers began the season with the prospect of becoming a great team, and that prospect soon materialized. ln their first meet, a four-way event held at North Eugene, the wrestlers finished in a tie for first place with North Eugene. The team then had one week to close out practices prior to the start of the dual meet season andthe hard work put in during that week paid off. Coached by Bob Williams, the wrestlers completed the season with only two losses in dual meets. After an opening defeat at the hands of North Salem 33-20, a non-district meet, South won three straight meets, lost to Roseburg, then closed with three more victories. The contest with Roseburg was also a non-district meet. The Axemen defeated Sheldon 29-24, then beat North Bend 29-22 and Springfield 36-lo before the loss to Roseburg 27-19. After outclassing St. Francis 34-6, the wrestlers traveled to North Eugene where they were victorious over the Highlanders 26-22 giving South the Lane A-l title. They then competed at Marshfield, defeating the Pirates 25-211 and winning the 5-A-l crown. At the district meet held at Willamette High School, the wrestlers finished third place behind Marshfield and North Bend, respec- tively. Five Axemen qualified for the state meet held at Corvallis one week later-Terry Smit, Art Erwin, Carl Warner, Jim Newman and Randall Bradley. Only Terry was able to reach the semi-finals where he was eliminated. Art Erwin grimaces as he fries to pin Springfield opponent, Carl Warner attempts to take-dawn Springfield wrestler
