GYMNASTICS Four in a Row South Eugenes gymnasts climaxed a hard-fought season by winning their fourth consecutive state championship at McAr- thur Court in March. South got its revenge, however, winning the last eight meets and beating David Douglas twice. Other victories were over Cottage Grove, North Eugene, Sheldon, South Salem, Thurston and the University of Oregon Frosh. By the time the district meet rolled around, South was not only favored to win, but was also given the nod for the state title. All TQ gymnasts in the district meet qualified for state as South piled up TO7-l X2 points to 68 for runner-up Sheldon and 53-lf? for third place North Eugene. At the state meet, the Axemen made the late-season prediction stand, edging out David Douglas for the crown. Co-Captain Bob l-lanes placed second in floor exercise with Ron Moninger taking fourth. ln the side horse event Tim Payley became the new state champion and Tim Ferguson placed third. Ron Moninger captured second place in the horizontal bar and Bruce l-loyt, sixth.
