-we r tV,LA2W 9 Guy Renfro leads pack of South and Thurston runners over course at Laurelwaad Golf Club. CROSS COUNTRY Painful Path to Glory T? Coached by Bob Kane, captained by Guy Renfro, and paced by seniors and sophomores, the varsity cross-country team ran away from local competition in capturing the district crown, and took third place in the state meet. Kane, in his first season as cross-country coach, instilled a determination in his runners that was the key to the relatively young teams success. Renfro, one ofthe four seniors on the regular varsity, placed first in all but one ofthe squads dual meets, took fifth in the district meet and tenth in state. Renfro was pushed throughout the season by sophomore Scott Ryman, who upset favorites in winning the district meet. Ryman also led South runners at state, placing eighth. The talent of the squads sophomores was a chief reason for the Axemens winning season. Four underclassmen, Chris Bell, Dan Norton, Joe Percival and Ryman ioined seniors Don Herrman, Dave Murphy, Renfro, and Dick Thorin on the first team. Scott Ryman strains as he wins district meet. l 44 1111
