SWIMMING 6:00 a. m. Practices Pay Off Axemen swimmers capped a great season by taking second place in the state meet held . at the University of Oregon's Leighton Pool. Rick Sikes and Roger Barrow placed second 3 in diving and the TOO-yard breaststroke, respectively. Charlie Scharpf took third in the .1 AOO-yard freestyle, and Doug McCallum captured fifth in the TOO-yard butterfly. Both the 200-yard medley and A00-yard freestyle relay teams placed fourth. . 3 One week earlier the boys easily wan the District 5-A-I crown, scoring 87 points to runner-up North Eugenes 35. Scharpf picked up a first in the 400-yard freestyle, and a second in the 200-yard individual medley. The remainder of the team added two first places, five seconds, and three thirds. , ll South finished the regular dual meet season by capturing its third consecutive city championship, The Axemen scored 811 points to 43 for North Eugene and 40 for Sheldon. The meet was loaded with outstanding performances, especially by Co- Captain Mark Tindall and sophomore Scharpf, each winning two events. Tindall won the 50 and IOO-yard freestyle races, while Scharpf took the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard freestyle. The 200-yard medley relay team eclipsed the old record by six seconds, and Co-Captain Roger Barrow set a new mark in the IOO-yard breast- , stroke. Bob Morse won the 200-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team , SWIM TEAM, FRONT ROW, FROMLEFT1 Robby placed lllfsl' Fichtner, John Sandstrom, Dirk Christenson. With Cheryl Jacobson and Darlene Staley scoring all of the points, the girls finished in seventh place at the state meet. Cheryl picked up two thirds and Darlene was fourth in two events. The girls placed second in the district meet, Cheryl and Darlene again led the way with Cheryl winning two events, and Darlene a first and a second. Coached by Bob Williams, both the boys and the girls compiled undefeated dual meet records. The boys won seven consecutive dual meets, extending their record to 211 victories in Q5 dual meets, over the past three years. The swimmers achieved their great season with before-dawn practice sessions. Six days a week for three months, the dedicated boys and girls had to leave cozy beds at 5130 a.m. to get to the Y pool for two-hour workouts before school started. Their early-bird efforts paid off.
