l Scott Ferguson applies face mask hold to bring down Thurston fullback Mike Johnson leads team onto field before Sheldon game Scoring the first two times they had the ball, the Axemen put on a brilliant offensive show to defeat fast-improving Willamette 2613. Scott Ferguson scored both first period touchdowns, ran and blocked with authority, and starred on defense in the onefsided contest. South's other two tallies were provided by Co-captain Mike Johnson. Both times the tight-end gathered in passes from quarterback Corcoran who had his best game of the year, completing a perfect seven out of seven passes for 152 yards. Spirit soared high in the seasons final game-Souths Home- coming battle with traditional cross-town rival North Eugene. North needed the victory for the district co-championship, while South attempted to lengthen its six-game win streak over the Highlanders. ln the emotion-packed contest, North defeated South for the first time ever. A capacity crowd saw the Axemen gain a 7-O lead onthe strength of Fergusons running, and hold on defensively to remain in front 7-6 at the end of three periods. But once again the fourth guarter spelled defeat. North of- fensed its way to two late scores and walked away with a lf?-7 victory and a berth in the state playoffs. Tackle Jim Wathey was placed on District 5-A-l's second offensive team, and guard Gary Pape and halfback Pete Marsh were given honorable mention. Pape was also awarded the Simmons Cup as the teams Most Inspirational Player and fullback Scott Ferguson was named to the state squad for the 1966 Shrine All-Stargame. 137

The JV's made up for lack of size with speed and desire and came up with several impressive victories. The Axemen blanked North Eugene 26-O and Willamette 32-O and also sent the score skyrocketing as they beat Sheldon 27-7.
