South displayed a powerful running game with Scott Ferguson and Terry Kane gaining all but 28 of the teams rushing yards. The Axemen scored first on a tackle-eligible pass play to .lim VVathey near the close ofthe first half. After a Colt fumble on a punting situation, Kane, who was exceptional on his end sweeps and long sideline dashes, wentthe final four yards on the late fourth quarter drive for the winning touchdown. Running again proved to be the strong point in the Axemen attack when they edged out North Bend 20-TB. Senior halfback Pete Marsh, outstanding throughout the game, chalked up 93 yards rushing, and scored two touchdowns on runs of l5 and 35 yards. South drew first blood on one of Marsh's runs after a Bulldog fumble was recovered on the North Bend 38-yard line. After a Jim Corcoran to Wathey tackle-eligible pass for a TD, the Axemen carrie back in the fourth period with another Marsh touchdown run to gain the victory. Over 5,000 spectators crowded into Civic Stadium to watch South tangle with unbeaten Sheldon, fifth rated team in the state. South's offense spent most of the first half watching from the sidelines as Irish quarterback Mick O'Conner led his team to a lop-sided 23-0 halftime bulge. The Axemen came back in the fourth quarter with Corcoran passing to split-end Kip Leonard for two touchdowns that made the final tally 35-lil. The Axemen bounced back against Springfield and played one of their best games of the season. Led by Marsh, who picked up T50 yards rushing, South totalled 365 yards offensively as they downed the Millers T4-0. Once again the tackle-eligible play was successful with Wathey scoring on a 20-yard pass from Corcoran. Defensively, South also played well, holding Springfield to a mere T24 yards.
