VARSITY FOOTBALL ,' . I O O Disappointing Season It was a hard-fought but frustrating four-win, five-loss season forthe Axemen football team. Although the gridders were hard hit by graduation, they were tabbed to take the runnereup spot by a pre-season poll of league coaches. After a strong start, they suffered a mid-season slump, losing three games in a row as iniuries to key players and an inexperienced defensive secondary hindered their success. Bad breaks and mistakes under pressure often resulted in games being lost in fourth quarters. The effort and desire of the squad, coached by Dave Powell, Harry Johnson and Mike Rose, generated many exciting games as well as several outstanding individual performances Against the leagues top teams such as North Eugene, Roseburg and Marshfield, the Axemen displayed winning qualities throughout the maior portions of the games, but were unable to maintain their leads. At the end of the season, South suffered its first loss to North Eugene in their seven-year rivalry as the Highlanders overcame a fourth quarter lead to win the game and the district co-championship.
