C LASS O F 1 959 CLASS M OTTO . . . Our Aim: To win Our Goal: Successf' CLASS COLORS . . . Brown and Yellow CLASS FLOWER . . . Yellow Rose September 9, 1958 - 8:10 a.m. It is the first day of school and the Seniors begin to arrive for their third and last year at South Eugene. 8:11 a.m. Confident their lockers are on Senior Row, they have no trouble finding them. 8:12 a.m. Seniors begin to gather by the school store in search of old friends. 8:13 a.m. Standing there laughing at the juniors and Sopho- mores efforts to make the first day of school a hit, they think of past years. 8:14 a.m. Seniors calmly stroll to their classes. Late - So What???? 8:15 a.m. The bell rings, the doors lock, The Seniors are still in the hall. After going to their rooms, the Seniors begin to work and continue to do so for the rest of the year. As the year came to an end, and the future after high school became a reality, memories of our three years at South Eugene High fiashed back. With shaky knees and the very obvious green look, we started our high school days. We were the largest class ever to enter Eugene Highfs doors. We outlived the 'cToo green to burn phase and finally became Juniors. As Juniors, we were no longer going to Eugene High, it was now called South Eugene High. During our Junior year, our main project was that of the Junior Prom, Stairway to the Starsa' which was very suc- cessful. We, also, established a memorial award in the remembrance of Terry Payne. By the spring, we be- came aware of the nearness of being Mighty Seniors. We elected four fine leaders to represent us as class ofiicers, Don David, President, Gary Kuhl, Vice- President, Sharon Lay, Secretary, and Connie Wilson, Treasurer. With the guidance of Mrs. Berreman and Mr. Goode, the oflicers guided our class's activities in our final year. Our long awaited goal of being Mighty Seniors was now true. The year began as we finally realized that we were now the top class in the school. As Seniors, we were proud to learn that thirteen of our class were selected as semi-finalists in the National Merit Schol- arship Test. Other members of the class have also been awarded various scholarships. Our class was equally proud of Larry Hirons who was named as the Future First Citizen. Perhaps the most successful happening this year was the winning of the Teens Against Polio drive. Our athletic teams have had both triumphs and heartbreaks. The Swimming Team became the State Champions, and the Basketball team enjoyed a good season while tying for second place in the District but losing a chance to go to the State Tournament in a playoff game. It is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that counts. We should all be proud of our athletic teams. Commencement was the high point of our Senior year. Plans were formulated throughout the year to prepare for this great event. As we leave this school, many fond memories will be taken with us wherever we go and we will be proud to say that we graduated from South Eugene High School with the class of 1959.
